NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
All this will be yours, if you worship me."7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'"23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath,31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
"Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah.41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
