When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to the district of Judea across the Jordan.1 Cuando acabó Jesús estos discursos, partió de Galilea y vino a la región de Judea, al otro lado del Jordán.
Great crowds followed him, and he cured them there.2 Lo seguía una gran multitud y él los curaba allí.
Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?"3 Se acercaron a Jesús unos fariseos y le preguntaron, para ponerlo a prueba: «¿Es lícito a un hombre repudiar a su mujer por cualquier motivo?».
He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female'4 Él les respondió: «¿No habéis leído que el Creador, en el principio, los creó hombre y mujer,
and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?5 y dijo: “Por eso dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre, y se unirá a su mujer, y serán los dos una sola carne”?
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate."6 De modo que ya no son dos, sino una sola carne. Pues lo que Dios ha unido, que no lo separe el hombre».
They said to him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss (her)?"7 Ellos insistieron: «¿Y por qué mandó Moisés darle acta de divorcio y repudiarla?».
He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.8 Él les contestó: «Por la dureza de vuestro corazón os permitió Moisés repudiar a vuestras mujeres; pero, al principio, no era así.
I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."9 Pero yo os digo que, si uno repudia a su mujer —no hablo de unión ilegítima— y se casa con otra, comete adulterio».
[His] disciples said to him, "If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry."10 Los discípulos le replicaron: «Si esa es la situación del hombre con la mujer, no trae cuenta casarse».
He answered, "Not all can accept [this] word, but only those to whom that is granted.11 Pero él les dijo: «No todos entienden esto, solo los que han recibido ese don.
Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."12 Hay eunucos que salieron así del vientre de su madre, a otros los hicieron los hombres, y hay quienes se hacen eunucos ellos mismos por el reino de los cielos. El que pueda entender, entienda».
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them,13 Entonces le presentaron unos niños a Jesús para que les impusiera las manos y orase, pero los discípulos los regañaban.
but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."14 Jesús dijo: «Dejadlos, no impidáis a los niños acercarse a mí; de los que son como ellos es el reino de los cielos».
After he placed his hands on them, he went away.15 Les impuso las manos y se marchó de allí.
Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?"16 Se acercó uno a Jesús y le preguntó: «Maestro, ¿qué tengo que hacer de bueno para obtener la vida eterna?».
He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."17 Jesús le contestó: «¿Por qué me preguntas qué es bueno? Uno solo es Bueno. Mira, si quieres entrar en la vida, guarda los mandamientos».
He asked him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, " 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;18 Él le preguntó: «¿Cuáles?». Jesús le contestó: «No matarás, no cometerás adulterio, no robarás, no darás falso testimonio,
honor your father and your mother'; and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"19 honra a tu padre y a tu madre, y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo».
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?"20 El joven le dijo: «Todo eso lo he cumplido. ¿Qué me falta?».
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."21 Jesús le contestó: «Si quieres ser perfecto, anda, vende tus bienes, da el dinero a los pobres —así tendrás un tesoro en el cielo— y luego ven y sígueme».
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.22 Al oír esto, el joven se fue triste, porque era muy rico.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.23 Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «En verdad os digo que difícilmente entrará un rico en el reino de los cielos.
Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."24 Lo repito: más fácil le es a un camello pasar por el ojo de una aguja, que a un rico entrar en el reino de los cielos».
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, "Who then can be saved?"25 Al oírlo, los discípulos dijeron espantados: «Entonces, ¿quién puede salvarse?».
Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."26 Jesús se les quedó mirando y les dijo: «Es imposible para los hombres, pero Dios lo puede todo».
Then Peter said to him in reply, "We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?"27 Entonces dijo Pedro a Jesús: «Ya ves, nosotros lo hemos dejado todo y te hemos seguido; ¿qué nos va a tocar?».
Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.28 Jesús les dijo: «En verdad os digo: cuando llegue la renovación y el Hijo del hombre se siente en el trono de su gloria, también vosotros, los que me habéis seguido, os sentaréis en doce tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.29 Todo el que por mí deja casa, hermanos o hermanas, padre o madre, hijos o tierras, recibirá cien veces más y heredará la vida eterna.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.30 Pero muchos primeros serán últimos y muchos últimos primeros.
