NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to the district of Judea across the Jordan.1 And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan.
Great crowds followed him, and he cured them there.2 And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there.
Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?"3 And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female'4 Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, Made them male and female? And he said:
and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?5 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh.
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate."6 Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.
They said to him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss (her)?"7 They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away?
He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.8 He saith to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."9 And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.
[His] disciples said to him, "If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry."10 His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry.
He answered, "Not all can accept [this] word, but only those to whom that is granted.11 Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given.
Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it.
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them,13 Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them.
but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."14 But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such.
After he placed his hands on them, he went away.15 And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence.
Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?"16 And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?
He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."17 Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
He asked him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, " 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;18 He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness.
honor your father and your mother'; and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?"20 The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me?
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."21 Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."24 And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, "Who then can be saved?"25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved?
Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."26 And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible.
Then Peter said to him in reply, "We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?"27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?
Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.28 And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.29 And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.30 And many that are first, shall be last: and the last shall be first.
