NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.1 Et factum est, cum consum masset Iesus praecipiens Duodecim discipulissuis, transiit inde, ut doceret et praedicaret in civitatibus eorum.
When John heard in prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him2 Ioannes autem, cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens per discipulossuos
with this question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"3 ait illi: “ Tu es qui venturus es, an alium exspectamus? ”.
Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:4 Etrespondens Iesus ait illis: “ Euntes renuntiate Ioanni, quae auditis etvidetis:
the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.5 caeci vident et claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur et surdi audiuntet mortui resurgunt et pauperes evangelizantur;
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."6 et beatus est, qui non fueritscandalizatus in me ”.
As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?7 Illis autem abeuntibus, coepit Iesus dicere ad turbasde Ioanne: “ Quid existis in desertum videre? Arundinem vento agitatam?
Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces.8 Sedquid existis videre? Hominem mollibus vestitum? Ecce, qui mollibus vestiuntur,in domibus regum sunt.
Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.9 Sed quid existis videre? Prophetam? Etiam, dico vobis,et plus quam prophetam.
This is the one about whom it is written: 'Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.'10 Hic est, de quo scriptum est:
"Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,
qui praeparabit viam tuam ante te".
Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.11 Amen dico vobis: Non surrexit inter natos mulierum maior Ioanne Baptista; quiautem minor est in regno caelorum, maior est illo.
From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.12 A diebus autem IoannisBaptistae usque nunc regnum caelorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.
All the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John.13 Omnes enim Prophetae et Lex usque ad Ioannem prophetaverunt;
And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come.14 et si vultisrecipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.15 Qui habet aures, audiat.
"To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,16 Cui autem similem aestimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibusin foro, qui clamantes coaequalibus
'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.'17 dicunt:
“Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis;
lamentavimus, et non planxistis”.
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'18 Venit enim Ioannes neque manducans neque bibens, et dicunt: “Daemoniumhabet!”;
The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by her works."19 venit Filius hominis manducans et bibens, et dicunt: “Ecce homovorax et potator vini, publicanorum amicus et peccatorum!”. Et iustificata estsapientia ab operibus suis ”.
Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented.20 Tunc coepit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factae sunt plurimae virtuteseius, quia non egissent paenitentiam:
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.21 “ Vae tibi, Chorazin! Vae tibi,Bethsaida! Quia si in Tyro et Sidone factae essent virtutes, quae factae sunt invobis, olim in cilicio et cinere paenitentiam egissent.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.22 Verumtamen dicovobis: Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in die iudicii quam vobis.
And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.' For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.23 Et tu,Capharnaum, numquid usque in caelum exaltaberis? Usque in infernum descendes!Quia si in Sodomis factae fuissent virtutes, quae factae sunt in te, mansissentusque in hunc diem.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."24 Verumtamen dico vobis: Terrae Sodomorum remissius erit indie iudicii quam tibi ”.
At that time Jesus said in reply, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.25 In illo tempore respondens Iesus dixit: “ Confiteor tibi, Pater, Dominecaeli et terrae, quia abscondisti haec a sapientibus et prudentibus et revelastiea parvulis.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.26 Ita, Pater, quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.27 Omnia mihitradita sunt a Patre meo; et nemo novit Filium nisi Pater, neque Patrem quisnovit nisi Filius et cui voluerit Filius revelare.
"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.28 Venite ad me, omnes, qui laboratis et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves.29 Tollite iugum meum super vos et discite a me, quia mitis sum et humilis corde,et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."30 Iugum enim meum suave, et onus meumleve est ”.
