Matthew 11

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.	1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ces consignes à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit delà pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
2 When John heard in prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him	2 Or Jean, dans sa prison, avait entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ. Il lui envoya de ses disciplespour lui dire:
3 with this question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"	3 "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?"
4 Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:	4 Jésus leur répondit: "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez:
5 the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.	5 les aveugles voient et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, lesmorts ressuscitent et la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres;
6 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."	6 et heureux celui qui ne trébuchera pas à cause de moi!"
7 As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?	7 Tandis que ceux-là s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean: "Qu'êtes-vousallés contempler au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
8 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces.	8 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu de façon délicate? Mais ceux qui portent des habitsdélicats se trouvent dans les demeures des rois.
9 Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.	9 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés faire? Voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu'un prophète.
10 This is the one about whom it is written: 'Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.'	10 C'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que moi j'envoie mon messager en avant de toi pour préparerta route devant toi.
11 Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.	11 "En vérité je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n'en a pas surgi de plus grand que Jeanle Baptiste; et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.
12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.	12 Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent le Royaume des Cieux souffre violence, etdes violents s'en emparent.
13 All the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John.	13 Tous les prophètes en effet, ainsi que la Loi, ont mené leurs prophéties jusqu'à Jean.
14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come.	14 Et lui, si vous voulez m'en croire, il est cet Elie qui doit revenir.
15 Whoever has ears ought to hear.	15 Que celui qui a des oreilles entende!
16 "To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,	16 "Mais à qui vais-je comparer cette génération? Elle ressemble à des gamins qui, assis sur lesplaces, en interpellent d'autres,
17 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.'	17 en disant: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé! Nous avons entonné unchant funèbre, et vous ne vous êtes pas frappé la poitrine!
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'	18 Jean vient en effet, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et l'on dit: Il est possédé!
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by her works."	19 Vient le Fils de l'homme, mangeant et buvant, et l'on dit: Voilà un glouton et un ivrogne, un amides publicains et des pécheurs! Et justice a été rendue à la Sagesse par ses oeuvres."
20 Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented.	20 Alors il se mit à invectiver contre les villes qui avaient vu ses plus nombreux miracles maisn'avaient pas fait pénitence.
21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.	21 "Malheur à toi, Chorazeïn! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chezvous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps que, sous le sac et dans la cendre, elles se seraientrepenties.
22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.	22 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour Tyr et Sidon, au Jour du Jugement, il y aura moins de rigueurque pour vous.
23 And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.' For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.	23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, crois-tu que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel? Jusqu'à l'Hadès tu descendras.Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui.
24 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."	24 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour le pays de Sodome il y aura moins de rigueur, au Jour duJugement, que pour toi."
25 At that time Jesus said in reply, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.	25 En ce temps-là Jésus prit la parole et dit: "Je te bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre,d'avoir caché cela aux sages et aux intelligents et de l'avoir révélé aux tout-petits.
26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.	26 Oui, Père, car tel a été ton bon plaisir.
27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.	27 Tout m'a été remis par mon Père, et nul ne connaît le Fils si ce n'est le Père, et nul ne connaît lePère si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut bien le révéler.
28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.	28 "Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et ployez sous le fardeau, et moi je vous soulagerai.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves.	29 Chargez-vous de mon joug et mettez-vous à mon école, car je suis doux et humble de coeur, etvous trouverez soulagement pour vos âmes.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."	30 Oui, mon joug est aisé et mon fardeau léger."
