1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 Il Signore nelle pianure di Moab, presso il Giordano di faccia a Gerico, disse a Mosè anche questo:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 « Ordina ai figli d'Israele che nei loro possessi diano ai leviti
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 delle città da abitarvi e i loro sobborghi all'intorno: le città per abitarvi; i sobborghi per i loro greggi e giumenti.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 Questi sobborghi si stenderanno da tutti i lati fuori delle mura della città per lo spazio di mille passi.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Vi saran due mila cubiti ad oriente, due mila a mezzodì, e verso il mare che guarda occidente, parimente due mila, e dalla parte di settentrione il medesimo spazio. Le città staranno nel mezzo, e al di fuori i sobborghi.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 Fra le città che darete ai leviti, sei saran destinate ad asilo dei fuggiaschi, per rifugio di chi avrà sparso del sangue. A queste aggiungerete altre quarantadue città,
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 in tutto quarantotto città coi loro sobborghi.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 Di queste città da darsi sui possessi dei figli d'Israele, ne saran prese di più da quelli che hanno avuto di più, e di meno da quelli che hanno avuto di meno: ciascuno darà delle città ai leviti in proporzione della sua eredità »
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 « Parla ai figli d'Israele e di' loro: Quando, passato il Giordano, sarete entrati nella terra di Canaan,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 determinate quali città debbano servire di rifugio ai fuggiaschi che involontariamente avranno sparso il sangue.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 Quando il fuggiasco vi si sarà rifugiato il parente dell'ucciso non potrà ammazzarlo, finché non sia comparso davanti all'assemblea e non sia stata giudicata la sua causa.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 Di queste città da darsi a rifugio dei fuggiaschi,
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 tre saranno al di là del Giordano, e tre nella terra di Canaan,
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 e tanto i figli d'Israele che i forestieri e i pellegrini, chiunque involontariamente ha sparso il sangue, vi potrà trovar rifugio.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Se uno percuote con ferro, e il percosso muore, quel tale è omicida e dovrà morire.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 Se uno scaglia un sasso, e il colpito muore, quel tale avrà pure la morte,
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Se uno percosso col bastone muore, sarà vendicato col sangue di chi l'ha percosso.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 Il parente dell'ucciso ucciderà l'omicida, l'ucciderà appena lo potrà aver nelle mani.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Se uno per odio dà ad un altro una spinta, o con premeditazione gli getta addosso qualche cosa,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 O per inimicizia lo colpisce colla mano, e quello muore, chi ha colpito è reo d'omicidio: il parente dell'ucciso l'ammazzerà appena l'avrà nelle mani.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Ma se per caso, senza odio
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 e senza inimicizia avrà fatto le dette cose,
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 ciò sarà stato provato davanti al popolo, e la causa sarà stata agitata tra chi ha percosso e il parente vendicatore dell'ucciso,
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 L'omicida sarà, come innocente, liberato dalle mani del vendicatore, e sarà ricondotto per sentenza nella città del suo rifugio, ove rimarrà finché non sia morto il sommo sacerdote, che è unto coll'olio santo.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Ma se l'omicida, trovato fuori delle città destinate ai fuggiaschi,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 sarà ucciso dal vindice del sangue, chi l'avrà ucciso sarà senza colpa,
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 perchè l'omicida doveva starsene nella città fino alla morte del pontefice, e soltanto dopo la morte di luì può ritornare alla sua terra.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Queste ordinazioni varranno in perpetuo e saranno leggi in tutti i luoghi ove abiterete.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 L'omicida sarà punito in seguito alla deposizione di testimoni; nessuno sarà condannato dietro la deposizione di un solo testimonio.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 Non riceverete danaro dall'omicida: sarà fatto morire subito anche lui.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Gli esuli e i fuggiaschi non potranno tornare in alcun modo nelle loro città avanti la morte del pontefice.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 Non contaminate la terra dove abiterete: essa resta contaminata dal sangue degli innocenti e non può essere purificata se non col sangue di colui che avrà sparso quello d'un altro.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 E così sarà purificata la vostra terra, mentre io dimoro con voi: io infatti sono il Signore che abito tra i figli d'Israele ».
