1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè nella steppa di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 "Ordina ai figli d'Israele che diano ai leviti, come parte del loro possesso, città da abitare e anche i pascoli intorno alle città.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 Avranno le città per abitare, i pascoli per le loro bestie, i loro beni, i loro animali.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 I pascoli delle città che darete ai leviti, dalle mura della città all'esterno, gireranno intorno per mille cubiti.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Misurerete all'esterno della città, nel lato orientale, duemila cubiti, nel lato meridionale duemila cubiti, nel lato occidentale duemila cubiti, nel lato settentrionale duemila cubiti, e la città sarà in mezzo: questi saranno per loro i pascoli della città.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 Le città date da voi ai leviti sono le sei città di rifugio che darete perché vi fugga l'omicida e, oltre a quelle, quarantadue città.
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 Tutte le città che darete ai leviti saranno quarantotto, quelle e i loro pascoli.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 Le città che darete proverranno dalla proprietà dei figli d'Israele: dal grande prenderete molto, dal piccolo poco. Ognuno, in base alla sua parte che ha ereditato, darà delle sue città ai leviti".
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 "Parla ai figli d'Israele e di' loro: Poiché passate il Giordano verso la terra di Canaan,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 designerete delle città che saranno per voi città di rifugio, dove fuggirà l'omicida che ha colpito qualcuno per inavvertenza.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 Le città saranno per voi un rifugio dal vendicatore e l'omicida non morirà finché non sarà stato davanti alla comunità in giudizio.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 Le città che darete saranno per voi sei città di rifugio.
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 Darete tre città al di là del Giordano e tre città nella terra di Canaan: saranno città di rifugio.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 Per i figli d'Israele, per l'ospite e per chi risiede in mezzo a loro, quelle saranno sei città di rifugio, perché vi fugga chiunque ha colpito qualcuno per inavvertenza.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Ma se uno ha colpito un altro con un oggetto di ferro e quello muore, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 Se l'ha colpito con una pietra che aveva in mano, atta a dare la morte, e il colpito è morto, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Se l'ha colpito con un oggetto di legno che aveva in mano, atto a causare la morte ed è morto, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 E' il vendicatore del sangue che farà morire l'omicida: quando lo incontrerà, lo farà morire.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Se uno per odio urta un altro o gli scaglia contro qualcosa con premeditazione e quello muore,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 o per ostilità lo colpisce con la propria mano e lo fa morire, chi colpisce sarà messo a morte, è un omicida; il vendicatore del sangue farà morire l'omicida quando l'incontrerà.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Ma se per caso e non per ostilità lo ha urtato o gli ha scagliato qualcosa contro senza pensarci,
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 o se gli ha fatto cadere sopra una pietra con la quale poteva morire, senza vedere, ed è morto, e lui non gli era nemico e non cercava il suo male,
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 la comunità giudicherà tra chi ha colpito e il vendicatore del sangue secondo queste regole:
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 la comunità salverà l'omicida dalla mano del vendicatore del sangue e lo farà ritornare nella città di rifugio, nella quale era fuggito, e vi risiederà fino alla morte del grande sacerdote, unto con l'olio santo.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Ma se l'omicida uscirà dal confine della città del suo rifugio, nella quale era fuggito,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 e il vendicatore del sangue lo troverà al di fuori del confine della città del suo rifugio e ucciderà l'omicida, non c'è sangue su di lui,
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 perché quello doveva risiedere nella città del suo rifugio fino alla morte del gran sacerdote; e dopo la morte del gran sacerdote l'omicida tornerà alla terra che possiede.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Queste saranno per voi le prescrizioni giuridiche, secondo le vostre generazioni, in tutte le vostre residenze.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 Per chiunque colpisce una persona, è secondo i testimoni che si ucciderà l'omicida, ma un solo testimone non può deporre contro uno per farlo morire.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 Non prenderete riscatto per la vita di un omicida che ha colpa per morire, perché sarà messo a morte.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Non prenderete riscatto per chi fugge dalla città del suo rifugio, per farlo tornare a risiedere nella terra fino alla morte del sacerdote.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 Non contaminerete la terra nella quale siete, perché il sangue contamina la terra, e per la terra non si può espiare per il sangue che vi fu versato se non con il sangue di chi lo ha versato.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 Non renderai impura la terra nella quale abitate, quella nella quale io abito, perché io, il Signore, abito in mezzo ai figli d'Israele".
