1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 Habló Yahveh a Moisés en las Estepas de Moab, cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó, y le dijo:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 «Manda a los israelitas que cedan a los levitas, de la herencia que les pertenece, ciudades en las que puedan habitar y pastos de alrededor de las ciudades. Se las daréis a los levitas.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 Esas ciudades serán su morada, y sus pastos serán para sus bestias, su ganado y todos sus animales.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 Los pastos de las ciudades que cedáis a los levitas comprenderán mil codos alrededor de la ciudad, a contar desde las murallas.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Mediréis, fuera de la ciudad, 2000 codos a oriente, 2000 codos a mediodía, 2000 codos a occidente y 2000 codos al norte, teniendo la ciudad como centro. Estos serán los pastos de las ciudades.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 Las ciudades que daréis a los levitas serán las seis de asilo, que cederéis para que se pueda refugiar en ellas el homicida, y además les daréis otras 42 ciudades.
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 El total de ciudades que daréis a los levitas será 48 ciudades, todas ellas con sus pastos.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 Estas ciudades que cederéis de la propiedad de los israelitas, las tomaréis en mayor número del grande y en menor del pequeño; cada uno cederá ciudades a los levitas en proporción a la herencia que le haya tocado.»
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 «Habla a los israelitas y diles: Cuando paséis el Jordán hacia la tierra de Canaán,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 encontraréis ciudades de las que haréis ciudades de asilo: en ellas se refugiará el homicida, el que ha herido a un hombre por inadvertencia.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 Esas ciudades os servirán de asilo contra el vengador; no debe morir el homicida hasta que comparezca ante la comunidad para ser juzgado.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 De las ciudades que les cedáis, seis ciudades serán de asilo:
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 tres ciudades les cederéis al otro lado del Jordán y tres ciudades en el país de Canaán; serán ciudades de asilo.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 Las seis ciudades serán de asilo tanto para los israelitas como para el forastero y para el huésped que viven en medio de vosotros, para que se pueda refugiar en ellas todo aquel que haya matado a un hombre por inadvertencia.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Pero si le ha herido con un instrumento de hierro, y muere, es un homicida. El homicida debe morir.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 Si le hiere con una piedra como para causar la muerte con ella, y muere, es homicida. El homicida debe morir.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Si le hiere con un instrumento de madera como para matarle, y muere, es un homicida. El homicida debe morir.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 El mismo vengador de la sangre dará muerte al homicida: en cuanto le encuentre, lo matará.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Si el homicida lo ha matado por odio, o le ha lanzado algo con intención, y muere,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 o si por enemistad le ha golpeado con las manos, y muere, el que le ha herido tiene que morir: es un homicida. El vengador de la sangre dará muerte al homicida en cuanto le encuentre.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Pero si lo derribó de casualidad y sin enemistad, o le lanzó cualquier objeto sin ninguna mala intención,
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 o le tiró, sin verle, una piedra capaz de matarle, y le causó la muerte, sin que fuera su enemigo ni buscara su daño,
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 la comunidad juzgará entre el homicida y el vengador de la sangre según estas normas,
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 y salvará la comunidad al homicida de la mano del vengador de la sangre. Le hará volver la comunidad a la ciudad de asilo en la que se refugió y en ella vivirá hasta que muera el Sumo Sacerdote ungido con el óleo santo.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Pero si sale el homicida de los límites de la ciudad de asilo en que se ha refugiado,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 y le encuentra el vengador de la sangre fuera del término de su ciudad de asilo, el vengador de la sangre podrá matar al homicida, sin ser responsable de su sangre,
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 porque aquél debía permanecer en la ciudad de asilo hasta la muerte del Sumo Sacerdote. Cuando muera el Sumo Sacerdote, el homicida podrá volver a la tierra de su propiedad.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Esto será norma de derecho para vosotros y para vuestros descendientes, dondequiera que habitéis.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 En cualquier caso de homicidio, se matará al homicida según la declaración de los testigos; pero un solo testigo no bastará para condenar a muerte a un hombre.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 No aceptaréis rescate por la vida de un homicida reo de muerte, pues debe morir.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Tampoco aceptaréis rescate por el que se ha refugiado en la ciudad de asilo y quiere volver a habitar en su tierra antes que muera el Sumo Sacerdote.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 No profanaréis la tierra en que estáis, porque aquella sangre profana la tierra, y la tierra no queda expiada de la sangre derramada más que con la sangre del que la derramó.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 No harás impura la tierra en que habitáis, porque yo habito en medio de ella, pues yo, Yahveh, tengo mi morada entre los israelitas.
