NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse, dans les Steppes de Moab, près du Jourdain vers Jéricho. Il dit:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 "Ordonne aux Israélites de donner aux Lévites, sur l'héritage qu'ils possèdent, des villes pourqu'ils y demeurent et des pâturages autour de villes. Vous les donnerez aux Lévites.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 Les villes seront leur demeure et les pâturages attenants seront pour leur bétail, leurs biens ettoutes leurs bêtes.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 Les pâturages attenant aux villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites s'étendront, à partir de lamuraille de la ville, sur mille coudées alentour.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Vous mesurerez, hors de la ville, 2.000 coudées pour le côté oriental, 2.000 coudées pour le côtéméridional, 2.000 coudées pour le côté occidental, 2.000 coudées pour le côté septentrional, la ville étant aucentre, ce seront les pâturages de ces villes.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 Les villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites seront les six villes de refuge, cédées par vous pour quele meurtrier puisse s'y enfuir; mais vous donnerez en plus 42 villes.
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 Vous donnerez en tout aux Lévites 48 villes, les villes avec leurs pâturages.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 Ces villes que vous donnerez sur la possession des Israélites, vous les prendrez en plus grandnombre à celui qui a beaucoup, en plus petit nombre à celui qui a peu. Chacun donnera de ses villes aux Lévitesen proportion de l'héritage qu'il aura reçu."
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 "Parle ainsi aux Israélites. Quand vous aurez passé le Jourdain pour gagner la terre de Canaan,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 vous trouverez des villes dont vous ferez des villes de refuge, où puisse s'enfuir le meurtrier quia frappé quelqu'un par inadvertance.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 Ces villes vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang, et le meurtrier ne devra pasmourir avant d'avoir comparu en jugement devant la communauté.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 Les villes que vous donnerez seront pour vous six villes de refuge:
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 les trois que vous donnerez au-delà du Jourdain et les trois que vous donnerez dans le pays deCanaan seront des villes de refuge.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 Pour les Israélites comme pour l'étranger et pour l'hôte qui vivent chez vous, ces six villesserviront de refuge, où puisse s'enfuir quiconque a frappé quelqu'un involontairement.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Mais s'il l'a frappé avec un objet de fer et qu'il ait ainsi causé sa mort, c'est un meurtrier. Lemeurtrier sera mis à mort.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 S'il l'a frappé avec une pierre propre à tuer et s'il l'a tué, c'est un meurtrier. Le meurtrier sera misà mort.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Ou bien s'il l'a frappé avec un outil de bois propre à tuer et s'il l'a tué, c'est un meurtrier. Lemeurtrier sera mis à mort.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 C'est le vengeur du sang qui mettra à mort le meurtrier. Quand il le rencontrera, il le mettra àmort.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Si le meurtrier a bousculé la victime par haine, ou si pour l'atteindre il lui a lancé un projectilemortel,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 ou si par inimitié il lui a porté des coups de poing mortels, celui qui a frappé doit mourir; c'estun meurtrier que le vengeur du sang mettra à mort quand il le rencontrera.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Mais s'il a bousculé la victime fortuitement, sans inimitié, ou s'il a lancé sur elle quelqueprojectile, sans chercher à l'atteindre,
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 ou si sans la voir il a fait tomber sur elle une pierre propre à tuer et a ainsi causé sa mort, alorsqu'il n'avait contre elle aucune haine et ne lui voulait aucun mal,
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 la communauté jugera, selon ces règles, entre celui qui a frappé et le vengeur du sang,
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 et sauvera le meurtrier de la main du vengeur du sang. Elle le fera retourner dans la ville derefuge où il s'était enfui, et il y demeurera jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre qui a été oint de l'huile sainte.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Si le meurtrier vient à sortir du territoire de la ville de refuge où il s'est enfui,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 et que le vengeur du sang le rencontre hors du territoire de sa ville de refuge, le vengeur du sangpourra le tuer sans crainte de représailles:
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 car le meurtrier doit rester dans sa ville de refuge jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre; c'est après lamort du grand prêtre qu'il pourra retourner au pays où il a son domaine.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Ce sera règle de droit pour vous et pour vos générations, partout où vous habiterez.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 En toute affaire d'homicide, c'est sur la déposition de témoins que le meurtrier sera mis à mort;mais un témoin unique ne pourra porter une accusation capitale.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 Vous n'accepterez pas de rançon pour la vie d'un meurtrier passible de mort; car il doit mourir.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Vous n'accepterez pas de rançon de quelqu'un qui, s'étant enfui dans sa ville de refuge, veutrevenir habiter son pays avant la mort du grand prêtre.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 Vous ne profanerez pas le pays où vous êtes. C'est le sang qui profane le pays et il n'y a pour lepays d'autre expiation du sang versé que par le sang de celui qui l'a versé.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 Tu ne rendras pas impur le pays où vous habitez et au milieu duquel j'habite. Car moi, Yahvé,j'habite au milieu des Israélites."
