1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 IL Signore parlò ancora a Mosè, nelle campagne di Moab, presso al Giordano di Gerico, dicendo:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 Comanda a’ figliuoli d’Israele che dieno, della possessione della loro eredità, ai Leviti, delle città da abitare, e anche i contorni di esse città.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 Abbiano adunque le città per abitarvi; e sieno i contorni di esse per li lor bestiami, per le lor facoltà, e per tutte le lor bestie.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 E sieno i contorni delle città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, ciascuno di mille cubiti d’ogn’intorno, dalle mura della città in fuori.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Misurate adunque fuor della città duemila cubiti, per lo lato orientale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato meridionale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato occidentale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato settentrionale, e sia la città nel mezzo. Questo sia loro lo spazio de’ contorni di quelle città.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 E quant’è alle città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sienvi imprima le sei città di rifugio, le quali voi costituirete, acciocchè chi avrà ucciso alcuno vi si rifugga; e a quelle sopraggiugnetene quarantadue altre.
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 Tutte le città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sieno quarantotto città, insieme co’ lor contorni.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 E di queste città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, dell’eredità dei figliuoli d’Israele, datene più, della tribù che sarà più grande; e meno, di quella che sarà più piccola. Ciascuna tribù dia delle sue città a’ Leviti, a ragion della sua eredità ch’ella possederà
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Poi il Signore parlò a Mosè, dicendo:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 Parla a’ figliuoli d’Israele, e di’ loro: Quando voi sarete passati il Giordano, e sarete entrati nel paese di Canaan,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 assegnate fra voi delle città di rifugio, nelle quali l’ucciditore, che avrà percossa a morte alcuna persona disavvedutamente, si rifugga.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 E quelle città vi saranno per rifugio d’innanzi a colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue; acciocchè l’ucciditore non muoia, finchè non sia comparito in giudicio davanti alla raunanza.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 Di quelle città adunque, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sienvene sei di rifugio.
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 Assegnate tre di quelle città di qua dal Giordano; e tre altre, nel paese di Canaan, per esser città di rifugio.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 Sieno queste sei città per rifugio, a’ figliuoli d’Israele, a’ forestieri, e agli avveniticci che saranno fra loro; acciocchè vi si rifugga chiunque avrà percossa a morte alcuna persona disavvedutamente.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Ora, se alcuno percuote un altro con alcuno strumento di ferro, colui è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 Parimente, se lo percuote con una pietra da mano della qual possa morire, ed esso muore, egli è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Simigliantemente, se lo percuote con uno strumento di legno da mano, del quale egli possa morire, ed esso muore, egli è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 Colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue faccia morire quel micidiale; quando lo scontrerà egli stesso lo potrà uccidere.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Così ancora se lo spinge per odio, o gli gitta contro alcuna cosa apposta, onde sia morto;
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 ovvero per nimicizia lo percuote con la mano, ed esso muore, del tutto sia il percotitore fatto morire; egli è micidiale; colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue potrà uccidere quel micidiale, quando lo scontrerà.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Ma, s’egli lo spinge, o gli gitta contro impensatamente, senza nimicizia, qualche strumento, ma non apposta;
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 ovvero, senza averlo veduto, gli fa cadere addosso alcuna pietra, della quale egli possa morire, ed esso muore, senza che gli fosse nimico, o procacciasse il suo male;
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 allora giudichi la raunanza fra il percotitore, e colui che ha la ragion di vendicare il sangue, secondo queste leggi;
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 e riscuota l’ucciditore dalle mani di colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue, e faccialo ritornare alla città del suo rifugio, ove si era rifuggito; e dimori egli quivi, fino alla morte del sommo Sacerdote, il qual sarà stato unto con l’olio santo.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Ma, se pur l’ucciditore esce fuor de’ confini della città del suo rifugio, ove egli si sarà rifuggito;
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 e colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue, trovandolo fuor de’ confini della città del suo rifugio, l’uccide; egli non è colpevole d’omicidio.
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 Perciocchè colui ha da star nella città del suo rifugio, fino alla morte del sommo Sacerdote; e dopo la morte del sommo Sacerdote, l’ucciditore potrà ritornare alla terra della sua possessione.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Sienvi adunque queste cose per istatuto di legge, per le vostre generazioni, in tutte le vostre stanze.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 Quando alcuno avrà percossa a morte una persona, sia quel micidiale ucciso, in sul dire di più testimoni; ma non possa un solo testimonio render testimonianza contro a una persona a morte.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 E non prendete prezzo di riscatto per la vita dell’ucciditore, il quale è colpevole, e degno di morte; anzi del tutto sia fatto morire.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Parimente non prendete alcun prezzo, per lasciar rifuggire alcuno alla città del suo rifugio; nè per ritornare a dimorar nel paese avanti la morte del Sacerdote.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 E non profanate il paese, nel quale voi abiterete; conciossiachè il sangue profani il paese; e il paese non può esser purgato del sangue, che sarà stato sparso in esso, se non col sangue di chi l’avrà sparso.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 Non profanate adunque il paese, nel quale voi dimorerete, in mezzo del quale io abiterò; perciocchè io sono il Signore, che abito per mezzo i figliuoli d’Israele
