1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:	1 In der Steppe von Moab, am Jordan bei Jericho, sprach der Herr zu Mose:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.	2 Befiehl den Israeliten, sie sollen von ihrem Erbbesitz den Leviten einige Städte abgeben, in denen sie sich niederlassen können. Auch die ringsum zu den Städten gehörende Weidefläche sollt ihr den Leviten überlassen.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.	3 Die Städte sollen ihnen als Wohnsitz gehören und die dazugehörenden Weideflächen sollen ihrem Vieh, ihren Herden und allen ihren Tieren zur Verfügung stehen.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.	4 Die Weideflächen der Städte, die ihr den Leviten gebt, sollen ringsum von der Stadtmauer zweitausend Ellen nach außen reichen.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.	5 Außerhalb der Stadt sollt ihr in östlicher Richtung zweitausend Ellen, in südlicher Richtung zweitausend Ellen, in westlicher Richtung zweitausend Ellen und in nördlicher Richtung zweitausend Ellen abmessen. Die Stadt soll also in der Mitte liegen. Das soll den Leviten als Weidefläche der Städte gehören.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--	6 Unter den Städten, die ihr ihnen abgebt, sollen sechs Asylstädte sein, die ihr als Zufluchtsorte für den bestimmt, der einen Menschen erschlagen hat. Außerdem sollt ihr ihnen weitere zweiundvierzig Städte geben.
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.	7 Im Ganzen sind es achtundvierzig Städte samt ihren Weideflächen, die ihr den Leviten abgeben sollt.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."	8 Die Zahl der Städte, die ihr vom Landbesitz der Israeliten abgebt, sollt ihr bei einem großen Stamm höher, bei einem kleinen niedriger ansetzen; jeder Stamm soll von seinen Städten den Leviten so viele abgeben, wie es der Größe seines eigenen Erbbesitzes entspricht.
9 The LORD said to Moses,	9 Der Herr sprach zu Mose:
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 Rede zu den Israeliten und sag zu ihnen: Wenn ihr den Jordan überschritten und Kanaan betreten habt,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.	11 dann sollt ihr einige Städte auswählen, die euch als Asylstädte dienen. Dorthin kann einer fliehen, der einen Menschen ohne Vorsatz erschlagen hat.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.	12 Die Städte sollen euch als Asyl vor dem Bluträcher dienen, sodass der, der getötet hat, nicht sterben muss, bevor er vor dem Gericht der Gemeinde stand.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:	13 Von den Städten, die ihr abgebt, sollen euch sechs als Asylstädte dienen.
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.	14 Drei dieser Städte sollt ihr jenseits des Jordan und drei in Kanaan bestimmen; sie sollen Asylstädte sein.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.	15 Den Israeliten, auch den Fremden und den Halbbürgern bei euch, sollen diese sechs Städte als Asyl zur Verfügung stehen; dorthin kann jeder fliehen, der ohne Vorsatz einen Menschen erschlagen hat.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	16 Wenn er ihn aber mit einem Eisengerät so geschlagen hat, dass er stirbt, ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder ist mit dem Tod zu bestrafen.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	17 Wenn er ihn mit einem Stein in der Hand, der groß genug ist, jemanden zu töten, so geschlagen hat, dass er stirbt, ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder ist mit dem Tod zu bestrafen.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.	18 Auch wenn er ihn mit einem hölzernen Gegenstand, der geeignet ist, einen Menschen zu töten, so geschlagen hat, dass er stirbt, ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder ist mit dem Tod zu bestrafen.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.	19 Der Bluträcher darf den Mörder töten; sobald er ihn trifft, darf er ihn töten.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,	20 Wenn einer einen andern aus Hass stößt oder aus dem Hinterhalt nach ihm wirft, sodass er stirbt,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.	21 oder wenn er ihn in feindlicher Absicht mit der Hand so schlägt, dass er stirbt, dann soll der, der zugeschlagen hat, mit dem Tod bestraft werden; er ist ein Mörder. Der Bluträcher darf den Mörder töten, sobald er ihn trifft.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,	22 Wenn aber einer einen andern aus Unachtsamkeit, ohne feindliche Absicht, gestoßen oder ohne Hinterhältigkeit irgendeinen Gegenstand auf ihn geworfen hat
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:	23 oder wenn er, ohne ihn zu sehen, einen Stein, der einen Menschen töten kann, auf ihn fallen ließ, sodass er starb - vorausgesetzt, er war nicht sein Feind und suchte ihn auch nicht zu schädigen - ,
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,	24 dann soll die Gemeinde zwischen dem, der getötet hat, und dem Bluträcher nach diesen Grundsätzen ein Urteil fällen:
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.	25 Die Gemeinde soll den, der getötet hat, vor der Gewalt des Bluträchers retten und ihn in die Asylstadt, in die er geflohen war, zurückbringen. Er darf darin wohnen, bis der Hohepriester stirbt, den man mit heiligem Öl gesalbt hat.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,	26 Wenn der, der getötet hat, das Gebiet der Asylstadt verlässt, in die er geflohen ist,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;	27 und der Bluträcher ihn außerhalb seiner Asylstadt trifft, darf dieser den, der getötet hat, umbringen; dadurch entsteht ihm keine Blutschuld.
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.	28 Denn der, der getötet hat, soll bis zum Tod des Hohenpriesters in der Asylstadt bleiben; nach dem Tod des Hohenpriesters kann er zu seinem Land und zu seinem Besitz zurückkehren.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.	29 Das soll bei euch überall, wo ihr wohnt, von Generation zu Generation als Recht gelten.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.	30 Wenn irgendjemand einen Menschen erschlägt, darf man den Mörder nur aufgrund von Zeugenaussagen töten; doch aufgrund der Aussage nur eines einzigen Zeugen darf man einen Menschen nicht töten.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.	31 Ihr sollt kein Sühnegeld annehmen für das Leben eines Mörders, der schuldig gesprochen und zum Tod verurteilt ist; denn er muss mit dem Tod bestraft werden.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Auch dürft ihr von einem, der in eine Asylstadt geflohen ist, kein Sühnegeld annehmen, sodass er vor dem Tod des Hohenpriesters in die Heimat zurückkehren könnte.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.	33 Ihr dürft das Land, in dem ihr wohnt, nicht entweihen; denn Blut entweiht das Land, und man kann das Land von dem darin vergossenen Blut nur durch das Blut dessen entsühnen, der es vergossen hat.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."	34 Verunreinigt nicht das Land, in dem ihr euch niedergelassen habt und in dessen Mitte ich selbst wohne; denn ich, der Herr, wohne mitten unter den Israeliten.
