1 "LORD Almighty, God of Israel, afflicted souls and dismayed spirits call to you.	1 E adesso Signore onnipotente, Dio di Israele, l'anima angustiata, e lo spirito afflitto alza le voci a te:
2 Hear, O LORD, for you are a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you:	2 Ascolta, o Signore, ed abbi pietà, perché tu se' Dio di misericordia, e fa misericordia con noi, perché abbiamo peccato davanti a te.
3 for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.	3 Perocché tu se' in eterno; e noi dovrem perire per sempre?
4 LORD Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel's few, the sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice of the LORD, their God, and the evils cling to us.	4 Signore onnipotente. Dio di Israele ascolta adesso l'orazione dei morti d'Israele, e de' figliuoli di quegli, i quali peccarono dinanzi a te, e non ascoltarono la voce del Signor Dio loro, onde si attaccarono a noi tutti i mali.
5 Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and name:	5 Non ti ricordare delle iniquittà de' padri nostri, ma ricordati di tua possanza, e del nome tuo in questo tempo:
6 for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD, we will praise!	6 Perocché tu se' il Signor Dio no tro, e noi ti darem lode, o Signore:
7 For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who sinned against you.	7 Conciossiachè per questo tu di timore hai ripieni i nostri cuori, affinchè invochiamo il tuo nome, e ti diamo lode nella nostra cattività; perocché noi abbiamo in odio l'iniquità de' padri nostri, che peccarono dinanzi a te.
8 Behold us today in our captivity, where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our God."	8 Ed ecco che noi siamo oggi nella nostra cattività, dove tu ci hai dispersi ad esser lo scherno, la maledizione, la feccia de' peccatori, secondo tutte la iniquità de' padri nostri, i quali si allontanaron da te, Signore Dio nostro.
9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: listen, and know prudence!	9 Ascolta, o Israele, i comandamenti di vita: porgi le orecchie ad imparare prudenza.
10 How is it, Israel, that you are in the land of your foes, grown old in a foreign land, Defiled with the dead,	10 Qual è il motivo, o Israele, per cui tu se' in terra nemica.
11 accounted with those destined for the nether world?	11 Invecchi in paese straniero, se' contaminato trai morti: se' stato con fuso con quegli, che scendono nell'inferno?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom!	12 Tu abbandonasti la fonte della sapienza:
13 Had you walked in the way of God, you would have dwelt in enduring peace.	13 Imperocché se tu per la via di Dio avessi camminato, saresti vissuto in una pace sempiterna.
14 Learn where prudence is, where strength, where understanding; That you may know also where are length of days, and life, where light of the eyes, and peace.	14 Impara dove sia la prudenza, dove sia la fortezza, dove sia la intelligenza, affin di sapere a un tempo dove sia la lunghezza della vita, e il nudrimento, dove sia il lume degli occhi, e la pace.
15 Who has found the place of wisdom, who has entered into her treasuries?	15 Chi trovò la sede di lei? e chi nè tesori di lei penetrò?
16 Where are the rulers of the nations, they who lorded it over the wild beasts of the earth,	16 Dove sono i principi delle nazioni, e coloro, che dominano sopra le bestie della terra?
17 and made sport of the birds of the heavens: They who heaped up the silver and the gold in which men trust; of whose possessions there was no end?	17 Coloro, che scherzano co' volatili del cielo,
18 They schemed anxiously for money, but there is no trace of their work:	18 Coloro, che tesoreggiano argento, ed oro, in cui confidano gli uomini, né mai finiscono di procacciarsene; color,che lavoran l'argento, e gran pensier se ne danno, e non hanno termine le opere loro?
19 They have vanished down into the nether world, and others have risen up in their stead.	19 Furono sterminati, e discesero nell'inferno, ed altri subentraron nel luogo loro.
20 Later generations have seen the light, have dwelt in the land, But the way to understanding they have not known,	20 Questi giovani vider la luce, e abitarono sopra la terra, ma non conobber la via della disciplina.
21 they have not perceived her paths, or reached her; their offspring were far from the way to her.	21 E noti ne compresero le direzioni, né i loro figli la abbracciarono: Ella andò lungi da essi.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan, nor seen in Teman.	22 Di lei non si udì parola nella terra di Chanaan, né fu veduta in Theman.
23 The sons of Hagar who seek knowledge on earth, the merchants of Midian and Teman, the phrasemakers seeking knowledge, These have not known the way to wisdom, nor have they her paths in mind.	23 I figli ancora di Agar, che cercano la prudeuza, che vien dalla terra, e i negozianti di Merrha, e di Theman, e i favoleggiatori, e discopritori della prudenza, e della intelligenza, la via non conobber della sapienza, né delle direzioni di lei fecer menzione.
24 O Israel, how vast is the house of God, how broad the scope of his dominion:	24 O Israele, quanto è mai grande in casa di Dio, e quanto grande è il luogo del suo dominio!
25 Vast and endless, high and immeasurable!	25 Egli è grande, e non ha termine, eccelso, e immenso.
26 In it were born the giants, renowned at the first, stalwarts, skilled in war.	26 Ivi furono que' giganti famosi, che furon da principio, di statura grande, maestri di guerra.
27 Not these did God choose, nor did he give them the way of understanding;	27 Non iscelse questi il Signore, uè questi trovarono la via della disciplina; per questo perirono.
28 They perished for lack of prudence, perished through their folly.	28 E percbè non ebbero la sapienza, perirono per la loro stoltezza.
29 Who has gone up to the heavens and taken her, or brought her down from the clouds?	29 Chi salì al cielo, e ne fece acquisto, e chi dalle nubi la trasse?
30 Who has crossed the sea and found her, bearing her away rather than choice gold?	30 Chi valicò il mare, e trovolla, e la portò a preferenza dell'oro più lino!
31 None knows the way to her, nor has any understood her paths.	31 Non è chi le vie di lei possa conoscere, né chi gli andamenti di lei comprenda:
32 Yet he who knows all things knows her; he has probed her by his knowledge-- He who established the earth for all time, and filled it with four-footed beasts;	32 Ma colui, che tutto sa, ei la conosce, e la discoprì colla sua prudenza: colui, che fondò, la terra per l'eternità, e la riempiè di animali, e di quadrupedi.
33 He who dismisses the light, and it departs, calls it, and it obeys him trembling;	33 Colui, che spedisce la luce, ed ella va: e la chiama, e a lui con tremore ubbidisce.
34 Before whom the stars at their posts shine and rejoice;	34 Le stelle diffusero il loro lume nelle loro stazioni, e ne furon liete,
35 When he calls them, they answer, "Here we are!" shining with joy for their Maker.	35 Chiamate, dissero, eccoci: e con gioia risplenderon per lui, che le creò.
36 Such is our God; no other is to be compared to him:	36 Questi è il nostro Dio, e nissun altro sarà messo in paragone con lui.
37 He has traced out all the way of understanding, and has given her to Jacob, his servant, to Israel, his beloved son.	37 Questi fu l'inventore della via della disciplina, e insegnolla a Giacobbe mio servo, e ad Israele suo diletto.
38 Since then she has appeared on earth, and moved among men.	38 Dopo tali cose egli si è veduto sopra la terra, ed ha conversato cogli uomini.
