1 "LORD Almighty, God of Israel, afflicted souls and dismayed spirits call to you.	1 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, un’anima nell’angoscia, uno spirito tormentato grida verso di te.
2 Hear, O LORD, for you are a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you:	2 Ascolta, Signore, abbi pietà, perché abbiamo peccato contro di te.
3 for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.	3 Tu regni per sempre, noi per sempre siamo perduti.
4 LORD Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel's few, the sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice of the LORD, their God, and the evils cling to us.	4 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, ascolta dunque la supplica dei morti d’Israele, dei figli di coloro che hanno peccato contro di te: essi non hanno ascoltato la voce del Signore, loro Dio, e siamo stati attaccati dai mali.
5 Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and name:	5 Non ricordare le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, ma ricòrdati ora della tua potenza e del tuo nome,
6 for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD, we will praise!	6 poiché tu sei il Signore, nostro Dio, e noi ti loderemo, Signore.
7 For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who sinned against you.	7 Per questo tu hai posto il timore di te nei nostri cuori, perché invocassimo il tuo nome. E ti loderemo nel nostro esilio, perché abbiamo allontanato dal nostro cuore tutta l’ingiustizia dei nostri padri, i quali hanno peccato contro di te.
8 Behold us today in our captivity, where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our God."	8 Eccoci ancora oggi nel nostro esilio, dove tu ci hai disperso, oggetto di obbrobrio, di maledizione e di condanna per tutte le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, che si sono ribellati al Signore, nostro Dio».
9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: listen, and know prudence!	9 Ascolta, Israele, i comandamenti della vita, porgi l’orecchio per conoscere la prudenza.
10 How is it, Israel, that you are in the land of your foes, grown old in a foreign land, Defiled with the dead,	10 Perché, Israele? Perché ti trovi in terra nemica e sei diventato vecchio in terra straniera?
11 accounted with those destined for the nether world?	11 Perché ti sei contaminato con i morti e sei nel numero di quelli che scendono negli inferi?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom!	12 Tu hai abbandonato la fonte della sapienza!
13 Had you walked in the way of God, you would have dwelt in enduring peace.	13 Se tu avessi camminato nella via di Dio, avresti abitato per sempre nella pace.
14 Learn where prudence is, where strength, where understanding; That you may know also where are length of days, and life, where light of the eyes, and peace.	14 Impara dov’è la prudenza, dov’è la forza, dov’è l’intelligenza, per comprendere anche dov’è la longevità e la vita, dov’è la luce degli occhi e la pace.
15 Who has found the place of wisdom, who has entered into her treasuries?	15 Ma chi ha scoperto la sua dimora, chi è penetrato nei suoi tesori?
16 Where are the rulers of the nations, they who lorded it over the wild beasts of the earth,	16 Dove sono i capi delle nazioni, quelli che dominano le belve che sono sulla terra?
17 and made sport of the birds of the heavens: They who heaped up the silver and the gold in which men trust; of whose possessions there was no end?	17 Coloro che si divertono con gli uccelli del cielo, quelli che ammassano argento e oro, in cui hanno posto fiducia gli uomini, e non c’è un limite ai loro possessi?
18 They schemed anxiously for money, but there is no trace of their work:	18 Coloro che lavorano l’argento e lo cesellano senza rivelare il segreto dei loro lavori?
19 They have vanished down into the nether world, and others have risen up in their stead.	19 Sono scomparsi, sono scesi negli inferi e altri hanno preso il loro posto.
20 Later generations have seen the light, have dwelt in the land, But the way to understanding they have not known,	20 Generazioni più giovani hanno visto la luce e hanno abitato sopra la terra, ma non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza,
21 they have not perceived her paths, or reached her; their offspring were far from the way to her.	21 non hanno compreso i suoi sentieri e non si sono occupate di essa; i loro figli si sono allontanati dalla loro via.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan, nor seen in Teman.	22 Non se n’è sentito parlare in Canaan, non si è vista in Teman.
23 The sons of Hagar who seek knowledge on earth, the merchants of Midian and Teman, the phrasemakers seeking knowledge, These have not known the way to wisdom, nor have they her paths in mind.	23 I figli di Agar, che cercano la sapienza sulla terra, i mercanti di Merra e di Teman, i narratori di favole, i ricercatori dell’intelligenza non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza, non si sono ricordati dei suoi sentieri.
24 O Israel, how vast is the house of God, how broad the scope of his dominion:	24 O Israele, quanto è grande la casa di Dio, quanto è esteso il luogo del suo dominio!
25 Vast and endless, high and immeasurable!	25 È grande e non ha fine, è alto e non ha misura!
26 In it were born the giants, renowned at the first, stalwarts, skilled in war.	26 Là nacquero i famosi giganti dei tempi antichi, alti di statura, esperti nella guerra;
27 Not these did God choose, nor did he give them the way of understanding;	27 ma Dio non scelse costoro e non diede loro la via della sapienza:
28 They perished for lack of prudence, perished through their folly.	28 perirono perché non ebbero saggezza, perirono per la loro indolenza.
29 Who has gone up to the heavens and taken her, or brought her down from the clouds?	29 Chi è salito al cielo e l’ha presa e l’ha fatta scendere dalle nubi?
30 Who has crossed the sea and found her, bearing her away rather than choice gold?	30 Chi ha attraversato il mare e l’ha trovata e l’ha comprata a prezzo d’oro puro?
31 None knows the way to her, nor has any understood her paths.	31 Nessuno conosce la sua via, nessuno prende a cuore il suo sentiero.
32 Yet he who knows all things knows her; he has probed her by his knowledge-- He who established the earth for all time, and filled it with four-footed beasts;	32 Ma colui che sa tutto, la conosce e l’ha scrutata con la sua intelligenza, colui che ha formato la terra per sempre e l’ha riempita di quadrupedi,
33 He who dismisses the light, and it departs, calls it, and it obeys him trembling;	33 colui che manda la luce ed essa corre, l’ha chiamata, ed essa gli ha obbedito con tremore.
34 Before whom the stars at their posts shine and rejoice;	34 Le stelle hanno brillato nei loro posti di guardia e hanno gioito;
35 When he calls them, they answer, "Here we are!" shining with joy for their Maker.	35 egli le ha chiamate ed hanno risposto: «Eccoci!», e hanno brillato di gioia per colui che le ha create.
36 Such is our God; no other is to be compared to him:	36 Egli è il nostro Dio, e nessun altro può essere confrontato con lui.
37 He has traced out all the way of understanding, and has given her to Jacob, his servant, to Israel, his beloved son.	37 Egli ha scoperto ogni via della sapienza e l’ha data a Giacobbe, suo servo, a Israele, suo amato.
38 Since then she has appeared on earth, and moved among men.	38 Per questo è apparsa sulla terra e ha vissuto fra gli uomini.
