NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after Nebuzaradan, captain of the bodyguard, had released him in Ramah, where he had found him a prisoner in chains, among the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.1 Sermo qui factus est ad Jeremiam a Domino, postquam dimissus est a Nabuzardan magistro militiæ de Rama, quando tulit eum vinctum catenis in medio omnium qui migrabant de Jerusalem et Juda, et ducebantur in Babylonem.
When the captain of the bodyguard took charge of Jeremiah, he said to him, "The LORD, your God, foretold the ruin of this place.2 Tollens ergo princeps militiæ Jeremiam, dixit ad eum : Dominus Deus tuus locutus est malum hoc super locum istum :
Now he has brought about in deed what he threatened; because you sinned against the LORD and did not obey his voice, this fate has befallen you.3 et adduxit, et fecit Dominus sicut locutus est, quia peccastis Domino, et non audistis vocem ejus : et factus est vobis sermo hic.
And now, I am freeing you today from the fetters that bind your hands; if it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, you may come: I will look after you well. But if it does not please you to come to Babylon, you need not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think good and proper";4 Nunc ergo ecce solvi te hodie de catenis quæ sunt in manibus tuis : si placet tibi ut venias mecum in Babylonem, veni, et ponam oculos meos super te : si autem displicet tibi venire mecum in Babylonem, reside : ecce omnis terra in conspectu tuo est : quod elegeris, et quo placuerit tibi ut vadas, illuc perge :
and then, before he left--"or go to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed ruler over the cities of Judah; stay with him among the people, or go wherever you please." The captain of the bodyguard gave him food and gifts and let him go.5 et mecum noli venire, sed habita apud Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan, quem præposuit rex Babylonis civitatibus Juda : habita ergo cum eo in medio populi : vel quocumque placuerit tibi ut vadas, vade. Dedit quoque ei magister militiæ cibaria et munuscula, et dimisit eum.
Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, in Mizpah, and stayed with him among the people left in the land.6 Venit autem Jeremias ad Godoliam filium Ahicam in Masphath, et habitavit cum eo in medio populi qui relictus fuerat in terra.
When the army leaders who were still in the field with all their men heard that the king of Babylon had given Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, charge of the land, of men, women, and children, and of those poor who had not been led captive to Babylon,7 Cumque audissent omnes principes exercitus, qui dispersi fuerant per regiones, ipsi et socii eorum, quod præfecisset rex Babylonis Godoliam filium Ahicam terræ, et quod commendasset ei viros, et mulieres, et parvulos, et de pauperibus terræ, qui non fuerant translati in Babylonem,
they came with their men to Gedaliah in Mizpah: Ishmael, son of Nethaniah; Johanan, son of Kareah; Seraiah, son of Tanhumeth; the sons of Ephai of Netophah; and Jezaniah of Beth-maacah.8 venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath, et Ismahel filius Nathaniæ, et Johanan et Jonathan filii Caree, et Sareas filius Thanehumeth, et filii Ophi, qui erant de Netophathi, et Jezonias filius Maachathi, ipsi et viri eorum.
Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, adjured them and their men not to be afraid to serve the Chaldeans: to stay in the land and submit to the king of Babylon, for their own welfare;9 Et juravit eis Godolias filius Ahicam filii Saphan, et comitibus eorum, dicens : Nolite timere servire Chaldæis : habitate in terra, et servite regi Babylonis, et bene erit vobis.
saying that he himself would remain in Mizpah, as their intermediary with the Chaldeans who should come to them. They were to collect the wine, the fruit, and the oil, to store them in jars, and to settle in the cities they occupied.10 Ecce ego habito in Masphath, ut respondeam præcepto Chaldæorum qui mittuntur ad nos : vos autem colligite vindemiam, et messem, et oleum, et condite in vasis vestris, et manete in urbibus vestris quas tenetis.
When the people of Judah in Moab, those among the Ammonites, those in Edom, and those in all other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah, and had appointed over them Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan,11 Sed et omnes Judæi qui erant in Moab, et in filiis Ammon, et in Idumæa, et in universis regionibus, audito quod dedisset rex Babylonis reliquias in Judæa, et quod præposuisset super eos Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan,
they all returned to the land of Judah from the places to which they had scattered. They went to Gedaliah at Mizpah and had a rich harvest of wine and fruit.12 reversi sunt, inquam, omnes Judæi de universis locis ad quæ profugerant, et venerunt in terram Juda ad Godoliam in Masphath, et collegerunt vinum et messem multam nimis.
Now Johanan, son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the armies in the field came to Gedaliah in Mizpah13 Johanan autem filius Caree, et omnes principes exercitus qui dispersi fuerant in regionibus, venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath,
and asked him whether he did not know that Baalis, the king of the Ammonites, had sent Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, to assassinate him.14 et dixerunt ei : Scito quod Baalis, rex filiorum Ammon, misit Ismahel filium Nathaniæ percutere animam tuam. Et non credidit eis Godolias filius Ahicam.
But Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, would not believe them. Then Johanan, son of Kareah, said secretly to Gedaliah in Mizpah: "Let me go and kill Ishmael, son of Nethaniah; no one will know it. Why should he be allowed to kill you? All the Jews who have now rallied to you will be dispersed and the remnant of Judah will perish."15 Johanan autem filius Caree dixit ad Godoliam seorsum in Masphath, loquens : Ibo, et percutiam Ismahel filium Nathaniæ, nullo sciente, ne interficiat animam tuam, et dissipentur omnes Judæi qui congregati sunt ad te, et peribunt reliquiæ Juda.
Nevertheless, Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, answered Johanan, son of Kareah, "You shall do nothing of the kind; you have lied about Ishmael."16 Et ait Godolias filius Ahicam ad Johanan filium Caree : Noli facere verbum hoc : falsum enim tu loqueris de Ismahel.
