Sirach 9

1 Be not jealous of the wife of your bosom, lest you teach her to do evil against you.	1 Non esser geloso della donna del tuo seno, perch'ella non rivolga a tuo danno il cattivo insegnamento [che le dai].
2 Give no woman power over you to trample upon your dignity.	2 Non abbandonare in balia della donna l'anima tua, si ch'ella s'imponga alla tua forza, e tu resti svergognato.
3 Be not intimate with a strange woman, lest you fall into her snares.	3 Non gettar gli occhi su una donna pubblica, chè tu non abbia a cader ne' suoi lacci.
4 With a singing girl be not familiar, lest you be caught in her wiles.	4 Non frequentar la ballerina, nè le dare ascolto, per non restar preso dalle sue arti.
5 Entertain no thoughts against a virgin, lest you be enmeshed in damages for her.	5 Non riguardare una vergine, perchè tu non abbia a sdrucciolare a cagion della sua avvenenza.
6 Give not yourself to harlots, lest you surrender your inheritance.	6 Non abbandonare alle sgualdrine l'anima tua, per non perder te stesso e il tuo patrimonio.
7 Gaze not about the lanes of the city and wander not through its squares;	7 Non guardar qua e là per le vie della città, nè andar vagando per le sue piazze.
8 Avert your eyes from a comely woman; gaze not upon the beauty of another's wife-- Through woman's beauty many perish, for lust for it burns like fire.	8 Ritrai lo sguardo dalla donna elegante, e non contemplare una bellezza straniera.
9 With a married woman dine not, recline not at table to drink by her side, Lest your heart be drawn to her and you go down in blood to the grave.	9 Per la bellezza d'una donna molti si perderono, e a cagion d'essa l'amore s'accende come fuoco.
10 Discard not an old friend, for the new one cannot equal him. A new friend is like new wine which you drink with pleasure only when it has aged.	10 Ogni donna che fa la bagascia, sarà calpestata come sterco per via.
11 Envy not a sinner's fame, for you know not what disaster awaits him.	11 Molti, presi d'ammirazione per la beltà di donna straniera, diventarono reprobi: la sua conversazione invero brucia come fuoco.
12 Rejoice not at a proud man's success; remember he will not reach death unpunished.	12 Con la donna altrui non ti sedere affatto, nè adagiarti con lei a mensa,
13 Keep far from the man who has power to kill, and you will not be filled with the dread of death. But if you approach him, offend him not, lest he take away your life; Know that you are stepping among snares and walking over a net.	13 non gareggiar con essa nel vino; perchè il tuo cuore non si volga a lei, e per la tua passione tu non cada in rovina.
14 As best you can, take your neighbors' measure, and associate with the wise.	14 Non abbandonare un vecchio amico, perchè il nuovo non sarà pari ad esso.
15 With the learned be intimate; let all your conversation be about the law of the LORD.	15 Un vino nuovo è l'amico nuovo; quando sarà invecchiato, lo berrai con delizia.
16 Have just men for your table companions; in the fear of God be your glory.	16 Non invidiare la gloria e le ricchezze del peccatore, perchè non sai quale sarà la sua catastrofe.
17 Skilled artisans are esteemed for their deftness; but the ruler of his people is the skilled sage.	17 Non compiacerti della violenza degli ingiusti; ricorda che l'empio non piacerà sino alla tomba.
18 Feared in the city is the man of railing speech, and he who talks rashly is hated.	18 Sta' lontano da chi ha potere d'uccidere, e non sarai in ansietà per timore di morte.
	19 E se l'avvicini, guarda di non commetter qualche fallo, chè non t'abbia a toglier la vita.
	20 Sappi che la morte è prossima, perchè cammini in mezzo a lacci, e sulle armi di gente dolente passeggisi
	21 Per quanto puoi, sta' in guardia verso il tuo prossimo, e tratta con i savi e i prudenti.
	22 Persone dabbene siano i tuoi commensali, e nel timore del Signore stia il tuo vanto.
	23 Il pensiero di Dio sia nell'animo tuo, e ogni tuo discorso [si aggiri] sui comandamenti dell'Altissimo.
	24 Dall'abilità degli artisti han lode le opere e dalla sapienza del suo discorso il capo del popolo, e dall'assennatezza la parola de' vecchi.
	25 Terribile nella sua città è l'uomo linguacciuto, e chi è temerario nel parlare sarà odiato.
