Sirach 33

1 No evil can harm the man who fears the LORD; through trials, again and again he is safe.	1 - a chi teme il Signore non incoglierà male; ma nella tentazione Dio lo salverà e lo libererà da' mali.
2 He who hates the law is without wisdom, and is tossed about like a boat in a storm.	2 il savio non odia i comandamenti e la legge, e non sarà sbattuto [contro gli scogli] come una nave in burrasca.
3 The prudent man trusts in the word of the LORD, and the law is dependable for him as a divine oracle.	3 L'uomo assennato ha fiducia nella legge di Dio, e la legge è per lui fedele [come un oracolo].
4 Prepare your words and you will be listened to; draw upon your training, and then give your answer.	4 Prepara il discorso e sarai ascoltato; raccogli il tuo sapere e rispondi.
5 Like the wheel of a cart is the mind of a fool; his thoughts revolve in circles.	5 Come la ruota d'un carro son le interiora dello stolto, e come un asse che gira, i suoi pensieri.
6 A fickle friend is like the stallion that neighs, no matter who the rider.	6 Come un cavallo stallone è l'amico beffardo: sotto chiunque lo monta, nitrisce.
7 Why is one day more important than another, when it is the sun that lights up every day?	7 Perchè un giorno sopravanza un altro, mentre la luce d'ogni giorno dell'anno [viene] dal sole?
8 It is due to the LORD'S wisdom that they differ; it is through him the seasons and feasts come and go.	8 Dalla sapienza del Signore furono distinti, fatto che fu il sole, che obbedisce agli ordini;
9 Some he dignifies and sanctifies, and others he lists as ordinary days.	9 ed egli variò le stagioni e i loro giorni festivi, che in quelle son celebrati all'ora stabilita.
10 So too, all men are of clay, for from earth man was formed;	10 Alcuni di quei [giorni] Dio esaltò e santificò; altri di essi mise a far numero tra i giorni. E [cosi] tutti gli uomini [vengono] dalla polvere, e dalla terra, donde fu creato Adamo.
11 Yet with his great knowledge the LORD makes men unlike; in different paths he has them walk.	11 Nella pienezza della sapienza il Signore li distinse, e variò le loro vie:
12 Some he blesses and makes great, some he sanctifies and draws to himself. Others he curses and brings low, and expels them from their place.	12 alcuni di essi benedisse ed esaltò, e parte ne santificò e avvicinò a sè; e altri ne maledisse e umiliò, e li rovesciò dalla loro posizione.
13 Like clay in the hands of a potter, to be molded according to his pleasure, So are men in the hands of their Creator, to be assigned by him their function.	13 Come la creta del vasaio è in mano sua perchè l'impasti e la formi,
14 As evil contrasts with good, and death with life, so are sinners in contrast with the just;	14 e tutti i suoi destini dipendono dal beneplacito di lui; così l'uomo è in mano di colui che l'ha creato, il quale dà a lui secondo il suo giudizio.
15 See now all the works of the Most High: they come in pairs, the one the opposite of the other.	15 Di fronte al male sta il bene e di fronte alla morte la vita: cosi di fronte al giusto il peccatore. E similmente osserva tutte le opere dell'Altissimo: [son sempre] a due a due, l'una opposta all'altra.
16 Now I am the last to keep vigil, like a gleaner after the vintage;	16 Or io mi son levato Pulitino [tra i cultori della sapienza], e come uno che racimola dietro i vendemmiatori.
17 Since by the LORD'S blessing I have made progress till like a vintager I have filled my wine press,	17 Nella benedizione del Signore ho sperato, e come uno che vendemmia ho riempito il tino.
18 I would inform you that not for myself only have I toiled, but for every seeker after wisdom.	18 Vedete come non per me solo ho lavorato, ma per tutti quelli che cercano d'istruirsi.
19 Listen to me, O leaders of the multitude; O rulers of the assembly, give ear!	19 Ascoltatemi, o grandi del popolo, e voi, che presiedete alla società, prestate orecchio.
20 Let neither son nor wife, neither brother nor friend, have power over you as long as you live.	20 Al figliuolo e alla moglie, al fratello e all'amico non dar braccio su te durante la tua vita. E non abbandonare ad altri le tue ricchezze, perchè tu non abbia a pentirtene e supplicare per riaverle.
21 While breath of life is still in you, let no man have dominion over you. Give not to another your wealth, lest then you have to plead with him;	21 Fintantoché tu vivi e respiri, che nessuno pigli il tuo posto.
22 Far better that your children plead with you than that you should look to their generosity.	22 Meglio è che i figliuoli preghino te, che tu debba guardare [in supplice attesa] alle mani de' tuoi figliuoli.
23 Keep control over all your affairs; let no one tarnish your glory.	23 In tutte le tue azioni resta tu il padrone:
24 When your few days reach their limit, at the time of death distribute your inheritance.	24 non imprimer macchia alla tua riputazione. Sul punto di finire i giorni di tua vita, e nell'ora della tua morte, [allora] distribuisci la tua eredità,
25 Fodder and whip and loads for an ass; the yoke and harness and the rod of his master.	25 pasto, bastone e soma all'asino: pane, castigo e lavoro allo schiavo.
26 Make a slave work and he will look for his rest; let his hands be idle and he will seek to be free.	26 Questi lavora [solo] se castigato, e cerca il riposo; lasciagli le mani sciolte, e cercherà la libertà.
27 Food, correction and work for a slave; and for a wicked slave, punishment in the stocks.	27 Il giogo e la briglia fan piegare il collo rigido, e le continue fatiche domano lo schiavo;
28 Force him to work that he be not idle, for idleness is an apt teacher of mischief.	28 per lo schiavo cattivo la tortura e i ceppi! Immergilo nel lavoro, che non stia ozioso;
29 Put him to work, for that is what befits him; if he becomes unruly, load him with chains.	29 perché di molto male l'ozio é maestro.
30 But never lord it over any human being, and do nothing unjust.	30 Mettilo al lavoro, come a lui si conviene: e se non t'obbedisce, domalo co' ceppi a' piedi. Ma non eccedere verso nessun uomo, e senza diritto non far nulla di grave,
31 If you have but one slave, treat him like yourself, for you have acquired him with your life's blood;	31 Se hai uno schiavo fedele, sia per te come l'anima tua, trattalo come un fratello: perché col sangue dell'anima l'hai comprato.
32 If you have but one slave, deal with him as a brother, for you need him as you need your life:	32 Se ingiustamente lo maltratti, si darà alla fuga.
33 If you mistreat him and he runs away, in what direction will you look for him?	33 E se piglia e se ne va, non saprai a chi dimandarne, né per qual via andarne in cerca.
