1 He does a kindness who lends to his neighbor, and he fulfills the precepts who holds out a helping hand.	1 Chi è misericordioso presta al suo prossimo, e chi ha mano generosa osserva i comandamenti.
2 Lend to your neighbor in his hour of need, and pay back your neighbor when a loan falls due;	2 Presta al tuo prossimo quando ha bisogno, e restituisci al prossimo a suo tempo.
3 Keep your promise, be honest with him, and you will always come by what you need.	3 Mantieni la parola e agisci lealmente con lui, e troverai in ogni tempo quello che ti bisogna.
4 Many a man who asks for a loan adds to the burdens of those who help him;	4 Molti tennero come roba trovata quella presa in prestito, e diedero molestie a chi li aveva aiutati.
5 When he borrows, he kisses the lender's hand and speaks with respect of his creditor's wealth; But when payment is due he disappoints him and says he is helpless to meet the claim.	5 Finché ricevono baciano le mani a chi loro dà, promettono con voce sommessa,
6 If the lender is able to recover barely half, he considers this an achievement; If not, he is cheated of his wealth and acquires an enemy at no extra charge; With curses and insults the borrower pays him back, with abuse instead of honor.	6 ma venuto il tempo della restituzione, chiedono tempo, dicon cose noiose, mormorano e dan la colpa al tempo.
7 Many refuse to lend, not out of meanness, but from fear of being cheated.	7 Se può pagare, fa delle difficoltà; renderà appena la metà di quanto deve, e (il creditore) dovrà contarlo come danaro trovato;
8 To a poor man, however, be generous; keep him not waiting for your alms;	8 altrimenti lo priva del suo, e acquista gratuitamente un nemico,
9 Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do not send them away empty-handed.	9 e lo paga con ingiurie e maledizioni, e invece di onore e benefizi gli rende insulti.
10 Spend your money for your brother and friend, and hide it not under a stone to perish;	10 Molti non prestano, non per cattivo cuore, ma perchè temono d'essere ingiustamente frodati.
11 Dispose of your treasure as the Most High commands, for that will profit you more than the gold.	11 Non ostante, sii d'animo generoso verso il meschino, e non gli fare aspettare la tua elemosina.
12 Store up almsgiving in your treasure house, and it will save you from every evil;	12 A causa del comandamento assisti il povero, e non lo rimandare a mani vuote nel suo bisogno.
13 Better than a stout shield and a sturdy spear it will fight for you against the foe.	13 Perdi il danaro per amor del fratello e del tuo amico, e non lo seppellire senza profitto sotto una pietra.
14 A good man goes surety for his neighbor, and only the shameless would play him false;	14 Impiega i tuoi tesori secondo i precetti dell'Altissimo, e ciò ti gioverà più dell'oro.
15 Forget not the kindness of your backer, for he offers his very life for you.	15 Nascondi l'elemosina nel seno del povero, ed essa pregherà per te contro ogni male.
16 The wicked turn a pledge on their behalf into misfortune, and the ingrate abandons his protector;	16 Meglio di saldo scudo e di lancia essa combatterà contro il tuo nemico.
17 Going surety has ruined many prosperous men and tossed them about like waves of the sea,	17 .
18 Has exiled men of prominence and sent them wandering through foreign lands.	18 .
19 The sinner through surety comes to grief, and he who undertakes too much falls into lawsuits.	19 L'uomo onesto si fa mallevadore pel suo prossimo, ma chi ha perduto ogni vergogna lo abbandona a se stesso.
20 Go surety for your neighbor according to your means, but take care lest you fall thereby.	20 Non dimenticare il benefìzio del mallevadore, perchè ha esposta per te la sua vita.
21 Life's prime needs are water, bread, and clothing, a house, too, for decent privacy.	21 Il peccatore e l'immondo fuggono il loro mallevadore.
22 Better a poor man's fare under the shadow of one's own roof than sumptuous banquets among strangers.	22 Iò peccatore s'attribuisce i beni del suo mallevadore, e l'ingrato di cuore abbandonerà chi lo ha liberato.
23 Be it little or much, be content with what you have, and pay no heed to him who would disparage your home;	23 Un uomo si fa mallevadore pel suo prossimo, e quello, mancandogli di ogni riguardo, l'abbandonerà.
24 A miserable life it is to go from house to house, for as a guest you dare not open your mouth.	24 Malleverie spropositate han rovinato molti che andavan bene, e li han messi sottosopra come tempesta di mare.
25 The visitor has no thanks for filling the cups; besides, you will hear these bitter words:	25 Hanno aggirato uominipotenti, li han costretti a fuggire, ad andare raminghi fra genti straniere.
26 "Come here, stranger, set the table, give me to eat the food you have!	26 Il peccatore che trasgredisce il comandamento di Dio s'impegnerà in malleverie rovinose, e chi tenta di far molte cose, cadrà sotto la giustizia.
27 Away, stranger, for one more worthy; for my brother's visit I need the room!"	27 Aiuta il prossimo secondo il tuo potere, e veglia sopra te stesso per non cadere.
28 Painful things to a sensitive man are abuse at home and insults from his creditors.	28 Il necessario alla vita umana è l'acqua, il pane, il vestito e la casa per coprire la nudità.
	29 Val più il vitto del povero sotto un tetto di tavole, che splendidi banchetti fuori di casa, senza domicilio.
	30 Contentati del poco come del molto, e non ti sentirai rinfacciare d'esser forestiero.
	31 L'è una brutta vita quella d'andare di casa in casa: dove uno è ospite non potrà agire con libertà, nè aprir bocca.
	32 Sarà ospite, darà da mangiare e da bere a gente in grata, e dopo questo sentirà amare parole:
	33 « Su via, ospite, ammannisci la tavola, con quello che hai teco dài da mangiare agli altri.
	34 Ritirati; c'è da fare onore ai miei amici, ho bisogno della mia casa: ricevo come ospite mio fratello ».
	35 Queste cose son gravi per un uomo che ha sentimento: i rimproveri del padrone di casa e le ingiurie del creditore.
