Sirach 29

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 He does a kindness who lends to his neighbor, and he fulfills the precepts who holds out a helping hand.	1 El que practica la misericordia presta a su prójimo, y el que acude en su ayuda observa los mandamientos.
2 Lend to your neighbor in his hour of need, and pay back your neighbor when a loan falls due;	2 Presta a tu prójimo cuando esté necesitado, y restitúyele a tu vez en el momento convenido.
3 Keep your promise, be honest with him, and you will always come by what you need.	3 Cumple tu palabra y sé leal con él, y encontrarás en todo momento lo que necesites.
4 Many a man who asks for a loan adds to the burdens of those who help him;	4 Muchos consideran el préstamo como una ganga y ponen en aprietos a quienes los han ayudado.
5 When he borrows, he kisses the lender's hand and speaks with respect of his creditor's wealth; But when payment is due he disappoints him and says he is helpless to meet the claim.	5 Hasta que reciben, besan las manos de la gente y hablan con humildad de las riquezas del prójimo, pero en el momento de restituir, piden prórroga, sólo devuelven con palabras quejumbrosas y echan la culpa a las circunstancias.
6 If the lender is able to recover barely half, he considers this an achievement; If not, he is cheated of his wealth and acquires an enemy at no extra charge; With curses and insults the borrower pays him back, with abuse instead of honor.	6 Si llegan a pagar, el acreedor recibe apenas la mitad y tiene que aceptarlo como un favor. Si no, lo despojan de sus riquezas, y él se gana inútilmente un enemigo que le paga con maldiciones e insultos y le devuelve desprecio en vez de honrarlo.
7 Many refuse to lend, not out of meanness, but from fear of being cheated.	7 Así, muchos se niegan a prestar, no por maldad, sino por temor a ser despojados sin razón.
8 To a poor man, however, be generous; keep him not waiting for your alms;	8 Pero tú sé indulgente con el humilde y no le hagas esperar tu limosna.
9 Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do not send them away empty-handed.	9 Socorre al pobre para cumplir el mandamiento y, en su indigencia, no lo despidas con las manos vacías.
10 Spend your money for your brother and friend, and hide it not under a stone to perish;	10 Pierde tu dinero por un hermano y un amigo: que no se herrumbre bajo una piedra y lo pierdas.
11 Dispose of your treasure as the Most High commands, for that will profit you more than the gold.	11 Deposita tu tesoro según los mandamientos del Altísimo y te reportará más provecho que el oro;
12 Store up almsgiving in your treasure house, and it will save you from every evil;	12 que el tesoro encerrado en tus graneros sea la limosna, y ella te preservará de todo mal:
13 Better than a stout shield and a sturdy spear it will fight for you against the foe.	13 mejor que un fuerte escudo y una lanza pesada combatirá a tu favor frente al enemigo.
14 A good man goes surety for his neighbor, and only the shameless would play him false;	14 El hombre de bien sale fiador de su prójimo, pero el que perdió la vergüenza lo deja abandonado.
15 Forget not the kindness of your backer, for he offers his very life for you.	15 No olvides los favores de tu fiador, porque él ha expuesto su vida por ti.
16 The wicked turn a pledge on their behalf into misfortune, and the ingrate abandons his protector;	16 El pecador dilapida los bienes de su fiador y el desagradecido abandona al que lo salvó.
17 Going surety has ruined many prosperous men and tossed them about like waves of the sea,	17 La fianza perdió a muchos que vivían prósperamente, los sacudió como una ola del mar;
18 Has exiled men of prominence and sent them wandering through foreign lands.	18 obligó a expatriarse a hombres poderosos, que anduvieron fugitivos por países extraños.
19 The sinner through surety comes to grief, and he who undertakes too much falls into lawsuits.	19 El pecador que se ofrece como fiador y busca ventaja, se expone a ser procesado.
20 Go surety for your neighbor according to your means, but take care lest you fall thereby.	20 Socorre a tu prójimo en la medida de tus recursos, pero ten cuidado de no arruinarte.
21 Life's prime needs are water, bread, and clothing, a house, too, for decent privacy.	21 Lo esencial para la vida es el agua, el pan, la ropa, y una casa para albergarse dignamente.
22 Better a poor man's fare under the shadow of one's own roof than sumptuous banquets among strangers.	22 Más vale vida de pobre en una cabaña que comida exquisita en casa ajena.
23 Be it little or much, be content with what you have, and pay no heed to him who would disparage your home;	23 Conténtate con lo que tienes, sea poco o mucho, y no oirás que te reprochan por ser un extraño.
24 A miserable life it is to go from house to house, for as a guest you dare not open your mouth.	24 Triste vida es andar de casa en casa: donde eres un extraño, no puedes abrir la boca.
25 The visitor has no thanks for filling the cups; besides, you will hear these bitter words:	25 Sirves de comer y beber a gente desagradecida, y encima tienes que oír cosas amargas:
26 "Come here, stranger, set the table, give me to eat the food you have!	26 –Ven aquí, forastero, prepara la mesa, y si tienes algo a mano, dame de comer».
27 Away, stranger, for one more worthy; for my brother's visit I need the room!"	27 –»Deja el lugar para alguien más importante; mi hermano viene a hospedarse, y necesito la casa».
28 Painful things to a sensitive man are abuse at home and insults from his creditors.	28 ¡Qué duro es para un hombre sensible que le reprochen la hospitalidad y le echen en cara una deuda!
