1 He does a kindness who lends to his neighbor, and he fulfills the precepts who holds out a helping hand.	1 Chi è compassionevole presta al suo prossimo, e se lo sostiene per mano osserva i comandamenti.
2 Lend to your neighbor in his hour of need, and pay back your neighbor when a loan falls due;	2 Presta al prossimo quando ha bisogno, d'altra parte sii puntuale nella restituzione.
3 Keep your promise, be honest with him, and you will always come by what you need.	3 Mantieni la parola per meritarti la fiducia, e sempre troverai quanto t'occorre.
4 Many a man who asks for a loan adds to the burdens of those who help him;	4 Molti considerano il prestito una cosa trovata, perciò poi stancano quanti li aiutano.
5 When he borrows, he kisses the lender's hand and speaks with respect of his creditor's wealth; But when payment is due he disappoints him and says he is helpless to meet the claim.	5 Prima di prendere gli bacia le mani e parla sommesso del suo denaro; ma per restituire ritarda sempre, dicendo parole piene di negligenza e scusandosi che il tempo non è adatto.
6 If the lender is able to recover barely half, he considers this an achievement; If not, he is cheated of his wealth and acquires an enemy at no extra charge; With curses and insults the borrower pays him back, with abuse instead of honor.	6 Se riesce a pagare, a stento il creditore otterrà la metà, e può considerarla come trovata; se non può, froda il creditore del suo denaro e poi lo tratta da nemico; gli restituirà maledizioni e ingiurie, invece d'onore gli darà disprezzo.
7 Many refuse to lend, not out of meanness, but from fear of being cheated.	7 Molti, per questo danno, non vogliono far prestiti, perché temono una perdita senza loro colpa.
8 To a poor man, however, be generous; keep him not waiting for your alms;	8 Tu, però, largheggia con l'indigente, non temporeggiare per fargli l'elemosina.
9 Because of the precept, help the needy, and in their want, do not send them away empty-handed.	9 A causa della legge cùrati del povero, non mandarlo a mani vuote quando ha bisogno.
10 Spend your money for your brother and friend, and hide it not under a stone to perish;	10 Perdi pure l'argento per il fratello e l'amico, invece che la ruggine lo consumi sotto la pietra.
11 Dispose of your treasure as the Most High commands, for that will profit you more than the gold.	11 Usa la ricchezza come vuole l'Altissimo, così ti gioverà più dell'oro.
12 Store up almsgiving in your treasure house, and it will save you from every evil;	12 Sia l'elemosina ciò che conservi nei tuoi ripostigli, ti libererà da ogni disgrazia,
13 Better than a stout shield and a sturdy spear it will fight for you against the foe.	13 combatterà per te contro il nemico più che scudo robusto e lancia pesante.
14 A good man goes surety for his neighbor, and only the shameless would play him false;	14 L'uomo dabbene garantisce per il prossimo, ma chi è senza pudore l'abbandona.
15 Forget not the kindness of your backer, for he offers his very life for you.	15 Non dimenticare il favore che ti ha fatto il garante, perché egli si è impegnato per te.
16 The wicked turn a pledge on their behalf into misfortune, and the ingrate abandons his protector;	16 Il peccatore rovina i beni del garante e l'ingrato abbandona chi l'ha salvato.
17 Going surety has ruined many prosperous men and tossed them about like waves of the sea,	17 La cauzione ha rovinato molti benestanti, li ha sconvolti come onda del mare;
18 Has exiled men of prominence and sent them wandering through foreign lands.	18 ha sloggiato di casa uomini potenti, facendoli emigrare in terre straniere.
19 The sinner through surety comes to grief, and he who undertakes too much falls into lawsuits.	19 Per il peccatore è un'insidia il far garanzia, vi cerca il profitto ma finirà nei tribunali.
20 Go surety for your neighbor according to your means, but take care lest you fall thereby.	20 Preòccupati del prossimo quanto puoi, ma bada a non esserne rovinato.
21 Life's prime needs are water, bread, and clothing, a house, too, for decent privacy.	21 Questo basta per vivere: acqua, pane, mantello e una casa che copra la propria intimità.
22 Better a poor man's fare under the shadow of one's own roof than sumptuous banquets among strangers.	22 Meglio vivere da povero al riparo di pochi legni, che mangiare sontuosamente in casa d'altri.
23 Be it little or much, be content with what you have, and pay no heed to him who would disparage your home;	23 Sii contento del poco o del molto che hai, e non sentirai il rimprovero perché sei straniero.
24 A miserable life it is to go from house to house, for as a guest you dare not open your mouth.	24 Brutta vita l'andare di casa in casa, dove sei ospite non puoi aprir bocca.
25 The visitor has no thanks for filling the cups; besides, you will hear these bitter words:	25 Devi accogliere gli ospiti, offrire da bere senza un grazie, per sentire poi cose amare:
26 "Come here, stranger, set the table, give me to eat the food you have!	26 "Avanti, o forestiero, imbandisci la tavola, se hai qualcosa in mano, dammela a mangiare".
27 Away, stranger, for one more worthy; for my brother's visit I need the room!"	27 "Via, o forestiero, c'è uno più importante, ho ospite mio fratello, occorre la casa".
28 Painful things to a sensitive man are abuse at home and insults from his creditors.	28 Per l'uomo che riflette son dure queste cose: essere disonorato da chi lo ospita e rimproverato dal creditore.
