1 The sluggard is like a stone in the mud; everyone hisses at his disgrace.	1 Il pigro è simile a una pietra insudiciata, tutti fischiano in suo disprezzo.
2 The sluggard is like a lump of dung; whoever touches him wipes his hands.	2 Il pigro è simile a una palla di sterco, chi la raccoglie scuote la mano.
3 An unruly child is a disgrace to its father; if it be a daughter she brings him to poverty.	3 Un figlio maleducato è la vergogna di un padre, se è una figlia il danno è più grave.
4 A thoughtful daughter becomes a treasure to her husband, a shameless one is her father's grief.	4 Una figlia sensata troverà marito, la svergognata è un dolore per chi l’ha generata.
5 A hussy shames her father and her husband; by both she is despised.	5 La figlia sfacciata disonora il padre e il marito, dall’uno e dall’altro sarà disprezzata.
6 Like a song in time of mourning is inopportune talk, but lashes and discipline are at all times wisdom.	6 Un discorso inopportuno è come musica in caso di lutto, ma frusta e correzione sono saggezza in ogni tempo.
7 Teaching a fool is like gluing a broken pot, or like disturbing a man in the depths of sleep;	7 I figli che hanno di che vivere con una vita onesta fanno dimenticare l’umile origine dei loro genitori.
8 He talks with a slumberer who talks with a fool, for when it is over, he will say, "What was that?"	8 I figli che millantano superbia e cattiva educazione disonorano la nobiltà delle loro famiglie.
9 Weep over the dead man, for his light has gone out; weep over the fool, for sense has left him.	9 Chi ammaestra uno stolto è come uno che incolla cocci, che sveglia un dormiglione da un sonno profondo.
10 Weep but a little over the dead man, for he is at rest; but worse than death is the life of a fool.	10 Parlare a uno stolto è parlare a chi ha sonno; alla fine dirà: «Cosa c’è?».
11 Seven days of mourning for the dead, but for the wicked fool a whole lifetime.	11 Piangi per un morto perché ha perduto la luce, piangi per uno stolto perché ha perduto il senno. Piangi meno per un morto perché ora riposa, ma la vita dello stolto è peggiore della morte.
12 Speak but seldom with the stupid man, be not the companion of a brute;	12 Il lutto per un morto dura sette giorni, per uno stolto ed empio tutti i giorni della sua vita.
13 Beware of him lest you have trouble and be spattered when he shakes himself; Turn away from him and you will find rest and not be wearied by his lack of sense.	13 Con uno stolto non prolungare il discorso, e non frequentare l’insensato: nella sua insipienza ti disprezzerà in ogni modo. Guàrdati da lui, per non avere noie e per non contaminarti al suo contatto. Evitalo e troverai pace, non sarai disgustato dalla sua insipienza.
14 What is heavier than lead, and what is its name but "Fool"?	14 Che c’è di più pesante del piombo? E qual è il suo nome, se non quello di stolto?
15 Sand and salt and an iron mass are easier to bear than a stupid man.	15 Sabbia, sale e massa di ferro si portano meglio che un insensato.
16 Masonry bonded with wooden beams is not loosened by an earthquake; Neither is a resolve constructed with careful deliberation shaken in a moment of fear.	16 Una travatura di legno ben connessa in una casa non viene scompaginata per un terremoto, così un cuore consolidato da matura riflessione non si scoraggia nel momento critico.
17 A resolve that is backed by prudent understanding is like the polished surface of a smooth wall.	17 Un cuore sorretto da sagge riflessioni è come un bel fregio su parete levigata.
18 Small stones lying on an open height will not remain when the wind blows; Neither can a timid resolve based on foolish plans withstand fear of any kind.	18 Ciottoli posti su un’altura di fronte al vento non resistono, così un cuore meschino, basato su stolti pensieri, non regge di fronte a un qualsiasi timore.
19 One who jabs the eye brings tears: he who pierces the heart bares its feelings.	19 Chi punge un occhio lo fa lacrimare, chi punge un cuore ne scopre il sentimento.
20 He who throws stones at birds drives them away, and he who insults a friend breaks up the friendship.	20 Chi scaglia un sasso contro gli uccelli li mette in fuga, chi offende un amico rompe l’amicizia.
21 Should you draw a sword against a friend, despair not, it can be undone.	21 Se hai sguainato la spada contro un amico, non disperare: può esserci un ritorno.
22 Should you speak sharply to a friend, fear not, you can be reconciled. But a contemptuous insult, a confidence broken, or a treacherous attack will drive away any friend.	22 Se hai aperto la bocca contro un amico, non temere: può esserci riconciliazione, tranne il caso d’insulto, di arroganza, di segreti svelati e di un colpo a tradimento; in questi casi ogni amico scompare.
23 Make fast friends with a man while he is poor; thus will you enjoy his prosperity with him. In time of trouble remain true to him, so as to share in his inheritance when it comes.	23 Conquìstati la fiducia del prossimo nella sua povertà, per godere con lui nella sua prosperità. Nel tempo della tribolazione restagli vicino, per avere parte alla sua eredità. L’apparenza infatti non è sempre da disprezzare né deve meravigliare che un ricco non abbia senno.
24 Before flames burst forth an oven smokes; so does abuse come before bloodshed.	24 Prima del fuoco c’è vapore e fumo di fornace, così prima del sangue ci sono le ingiurie.
25 From a friend in need of support no one need hide in shame;	25 Non mi vergognerò di proteggere un amico, non mi nasconderò davanti a lui.
26 But from him who brings harm to his friend all will stand aloof who hear of it.	26 Se mi succederà il male a causa sua, chiunque lo venga a sapere si guarderà da lui.
27 Who will set a guard over my mouth, and upon my lips an effective seal, That I may not fail through them, that my tongue may not destroy me?	27 Chi porrà una guardia alla mia bocca, e alle mie labbra un sigillo guardingo, perché io non cada per colpa loro e la mia lingua non sia la mia rovina?
