Sirach 18

1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 Colui che vive in eterno creò ugualmente tutto;
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 solo il Signore sarà riconosciuto giusto.
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?	3 A nessuno è concesso di annunciare le sue opere e di scoprire le sue grandezze?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 Chi può misurare il potere della sua grandezza e potrà raccontare le sue misericordie?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 Non si può diminuire e aggiungere né si può scoprire le meraviglie del Signore.
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 Quando l’uomo arriva in fondo, allora comincia; come è giunto al termine, rimane perplesso.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Che cosa è l’uomo e quale la sua utilità? Qual è il suo bene e qual è il suo male?
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 Il numero dei giorni dell’uomo al massimo può arrivare a cent’anni:
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 goccia d’acqua del mare e granello di sabbia... così pochi quegli anni nel giorno dell’eternità!
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Per questo il Signore è longanime con loro e versa su di essi la sua misericordia.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 Egli vede e conosce bene che la loro sorte è deprecabile e, per questo, abbonda nel perdono.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 La compassione dell’uomo va al suo vicino; la compassione del Signore va a ogni creatura:
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 riprende, istruisce, ammaestra, riconduce, come pastore, il gregge.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Ha misericordia di chi riceve l’educazione e di chi si preoccupa dei suoi giudizi.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Figlio, quando benefichi, non fare critiche; né parole amare, quando doni.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 La rugiada non tempera la calura? Ugualmente, la parola conta più del dono.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 La parola non vale più di un buon dono? Tutti e due sono in un uomo pieno di grazia.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 Lo stolto rimprovera sgarbatamente; il dono dell'invidioso offende gli occhi.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Prima di parlare, renditi conto; prima di ammalarti, provvedi alla salute.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Esaminati prima del giudizio e, nel giorno dei conti, troverai perdono.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Prima di venir meno, umiliati; dopo aver peccato, mostra la tua conversione.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Non stancarti nell’eseguire a tempo la promessa; non aspettare la morte a metterti in regola.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Prima di promettere, preparati e non essere come l’uomo che tenta il Signore.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Ricorda l’ira degli ultimi giorni e il tempo della vendetta, quando egli volgerà la faccia.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 Ricorda la carestia, quando sei nell’abbondanza, e l’angustia della penuria nei giorni della ricchezza.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 Dal mattino alla sera cambia il tempo e tutto è veloce dinanzi al Signore.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 L’uomo sapiente è cauto in ogni cosa e, nei giorni del peccato, si preserva dalla colpa.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Ogni assennato conosce la sapienza e a chi la trova è concesso di celebrarla.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Istruiti nei detti, diventano a loro volta saggi e fanno piovere sentenze appropriate.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 Non seguire le tue brame e metti un freno alle tue avidità.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Se per la tua anima concedi licenza alle voglie, queste ti renderanno godimento per i tuoi nemici.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Non gavazzare nei molti piaceri, dai quali si ha doppia povertà.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 Non essere mangione o beone, quando nella borsa non c’è niente.
