1 Then shall the just one with great assurance confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors.	1 Allora i giusti staranno con grande baldanza contro coloro che li oppressero e rapirono le lo­ro fatiche.
2 Seeing this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at the unlooked-for salvation.	2 E quelli a tal vista saranno agitati da orribile spa­vento e resteranno maravigliati dell'inaspettata e repentina sal­vezza.
3 They shall say among themselves, rueful and groaning through anguish of spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a laughingstock and as a type for mockery,	3 E diranno tra sè, tocchi da pentimento, e gementi per l'affanno del loro spirito: « Ecco quelli che una volta eran l'ogget­to delle nostre derisioni, l'esem­pio dell'ignominia!
4 fools that we were! His life we accounted madness, and his death dishonored.	4 Noi, insensa­ti, stimavamo la loro vita una pazzia e senza onore la loro fine
5 See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints!	5 ecco che essi sono annoverati tra i figli di Dio ed hanno il loro posto fra i santi.
6 We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.	6 Dunque siam noi che abbiamo sbagliato, lungi dalla via della verità, per noi non brillò la luce della giustizia, per noi non sorse il sole dell'intelligenza!
7 We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not.	7 Ci stancammo nella via del­l'iniquità e della perdizione, cam­minammo per vie difficili, e non arrivammo a conoscere la via del Signore.
8 What did our pride avail us? What have wealth and its boastfulness afforded us?	8 A che ci ha servito la superbia? Qual utile ci ha apportato la boria delle ricchezze?
9 All of them passed like a shadow and like a fleeting rumor;	9 Tutte queste cose son passate come un'ombra, come rapido messag­gero,
10 Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves.	10 come nave che attraversa l'onde agitate, della quale, passa­ta che sia, non se ne trova più la traccia, nè il solco della sua ca­rena tra i flutti;
11 Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found- But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it.	11 Come uccello che vola per l'aria senza lasciare traccia alcuna del suo passaggio, eccetto il frullo delle ali attraver­so l'aura leggera, rotta dallo slan­cio del volo: battendo le ali passò e non è possibile trovare alcun segno del suo passaggio;
12 Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through-	12 come freccia scagliata al bersaglio: l'aria da lei divisa ritorna subito al suo posto in modo che è impossi­bile sapere per dove è passata.
13 Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness."	13 Così noi appena nati cessam­mo d'essere, e, senza riuscire a mostrare alcun segno di virtù, restammo consumati dalla nostra malvagità ».
14 Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day.	14 Così dicono nell'in­ferno i peccatori.
15 But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High.	15 Perchè la spe­ranza dell'empio è come pula al vento, è come lieve spuma dis­sipata dalla tempesta, è come fumo disperso dal vento, è come il ricordo d'un pellegrino che si è fermato un giorno solo.
16 Therefore shall they receive the splendid crown, the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the LORD- For he shall shelter them with his right hand, and protect them with his arm.	16 Ma i giusti vivranno in eterno: la loro ricompensa è nelle ma­ni del Signore e di essi si prende cura l'Altissimo.
17 He shall take his zeal for armor and he shall arm creation to requite the enemy;	17 Per questo otterranno il regno della gloria, una bella corona dalla mano del Signore che li proteggerà colla sua destra e li difenderà col suo santo braccio.
18 He shall don justice for a breastplate and shall wear sure judgment for a helmet;	18 Il suo zelo pren­derà le armi, ed armerà le crea­ture per far vendetta contro i ne­mici.
19 He shall take invincible rectitude as a shield	19 Vestirà qual corazza la giustizia, prenderà come elmo il giudizio infallibile,
20 and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy.	20 prenderà come scudo invincibile l'equità.
21 Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark;	21 Aguzzerà la sua inflessibile ira come lancia e con lui combatte­rà l'universo contro gli insensa­ti.
22 and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow;	22 I fulmini scagliati andranno dritti a colpire, scoccheranno dal ben curvato arco delle nubi, e voleranno al bersaglio prefisso.
23 A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates.	23 E dall'ira dura come pietra sarà scagliata grossa grandine, con­tro di essi infurieranno le onde del mare e si precipiteranno con violenza i fiumi.
	24 Contro di essi si leverà un vento impetuoso, come turbine li porterà via. La loro iniquità ridurrà la terra a un deserto, e la malvagità rovescerà i troni dei potenti.
