1 Then shall the just one with great assurance confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors.	1 Allora staranno i giusti con grande sicurezza in faccia a coloro che li oppressero e depredarono le loro fatiche.
2 Seeing this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at the unlooked-for salvation.	2 Al vederli, [gli empi] saranno agitati da tremenda paura, e stupiranno della [repentina] inaspettata salvezza.
3 They shall say among themselves, rueful and groaning through anguish of spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a laughingstock and as a type for mockery,	3 Diranno dentro di sè, presi da pentimento, e per l’angoscia dell’animo sospirando: « Questi son coloro che facemmo un tempo oggetto di risa e d'obbrobrioso motteggio,
4 fools that we were! His life we accounted madness, and his death dishonored.	4 noi insensati! La vita loro stimavamo un’ insania e senza onore la loro fine.
5 See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints!	5 Eccoli [invece] annoverati tra i figliuoli di Dio, e tra i santi è il loro retaggio!
6 We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.	6 Errammo adunque lungi dalla via della verità, e la luce della giustizia non rifulse per noi e il sole dell'intelligenza per noi non si levò.
7 We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not.	7 Ci siamo stancati pe’ sentieri dell'iniquità e della perdizione, e percorremmo strade disagevoli; ma la via del Signore non abbiam conosciuto.
8 What did our pride avail us? What have wealth and its boastfulness afforded us?	8 Che c'è giovata la superbia? o la iattanza delle ricchezze qual prò ci ha fatto?
9 All of them passed like a shadow and like a fleeting rumor;	9 Passò tutto ciò come un'ombra, come volante notizia,
10 Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves.	10 come nave che fende l'onda agitata, di cui, passata che sia, non si scorge vestigio, nè solco della sua carena sul marosi;
11 Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found- But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it.	11 o come uccello che vola via per l'aria, del cui viaggio nessuna traccia rimane: ma il vento leggero, battuto a colpi d'ala e rotto a forza con lo stridor delle mosse penne, fu attraversato, nè si trovò poi segno del passaggio per esso;
12 Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through-	12 o come [quando], scagliata una freccia al bersaglio, l'aria divisa rifluisce subitamente in se stessa, sicché nulla [più] si sappia del percorso di quella.
13 Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness."	13 Così anche noi, dopo esser nati, abbiam cessato d'essere, e nessun segno di virtù potemmo mostrare, ma nella nostra iniquità ci siam consumati ».
14 Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day.	14 Così nell' inferno ragionano i peccatori.
15 But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High.	15 Perchè la speranza dell’empio è come pula, portata dal vento, come lieve spuma dispersa dalla tempesta, come fumo dissipato dal vento, come il ricordo dell’ospite fugace d’un giorno.
16 Therefore shall they receive the splendid crown, the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the LORD- For he shall shelter them with his right hand, and protect them with his arm.	16 Ma i giusti vivranno in eterno, e nelle mani del Signore è la lor ricompensa, e la cura di loro presso l’Altissimo.
17 He shall take his zeal for armor and he shall arm creation to requite the enemy;	17 Perciò riceveranno il regno della magnificenza e il diadema della bellezza dalla mano del Signore. Perchè con la destra li proteggerà, e col braccio suo santo li difenderà.
18 He shall don justice for a breastplate and shall wear sure judgment for a helmet;	18 Prenderà come armatura il suo zelo, e armerà il creato a far vendetta de’ nemici.
19 He shall take invincible rectitude as a shield	19 Indosserà come corazza la giustizia, e si metterà per elmo un giudizio verace.
20 and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy.	20 Prenderà per scudo invincibile Tenuità [e la santità],
21 Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark;	21 aguzzerà l'inflessibile ira a mo’ di spada, e l’universo combatterà con lui contro gl’ Insensati.
22 and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow;	22 Partiranno ben dirette le scagliate folgori, e dalle nubi, come da ben curvato arco, voleranno al bersaglio.
23 A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates.	23 E dalla balestrante ira [divina] dense grandini saran scagliate; si sdegnerà contro di loro l’acqua del mare, e le fiumane inonderanno violentemente.
	24 Si leverà contr’essi un soffio di potenza e come turbine di vento li disperderà.
	25 un deserto ridurrà tutta la terra la loro iniquità, e la malvagità abbatterà i troni de' potentati.
