1 Then shall the just one with great assurance confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors.	1 Allora il giusto starà con molta franchezza di fronte a quanti l'hanno oppresso e a quanti hanno disprezzato le sue sofferenze.
2 Seeing this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at the unlooked-for salvation.	2 Vedendolo saranno sconvolti da terribile paura e resteranno stupefatti per l'inaspettata salvezza.
3 They shall say among themselves, rueful and groaning through anguish of spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a laughingstock and as a type for mockery,	3 Pentiti, diranno fra di loro, e per angustia di spirito si lamenteranno dicendo:
4 fools that we were! His life we accounted madness, and his death dishonored.	4 "Questi è colui che una volta abbiamo tenuto come un oggetto di scherno, e per bersaglio di oltraggi. Insensati! Abbiamo stimato la sua vita una follia e la sua fine un disonore.
5 See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints!	5 Come mai è computato tra i figli di Dio e tra i santi è la sua sorte?
6 We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.	6 Abbiamo dunque errato dalla via della verità, la luce della giustizia non è brillata per noi e il sole non è sorto per noi.
7 We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not.	7 Ci siamo saziati per i sentieri dell'iniquità e della perdizione, abbiamo percorso deserti impraticabili, ma non abbiamo conosciuto la via del Signore.
8 What did our pride avail us? What have wealth and its boastfulness afforded us?	8 Che cosa ci ha giovato l'orgoglio? Che cosa ci ha apportato la ricchezza con l'arroganza?
9 All of them passed like a shadow and like a fleeting rumor;	9 Tutto è passato come ombra e come fugace notizia,
10 Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves.	10 come nave che fende l'acqua agitata, del cui passaggio non resta traccia, né solco della sua carena nei flutti;
11 Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found- But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it.	11 o come uccello che vola per l'aria, della cui corsa non si trova alcun segno, ma percossa l'aura leggera dal tocco delle ali e divisa con la forza dell'impeto, è attraversata dai battiti delle ali, e dopo ciò non si trova in essa segno del passaggio;
12 Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through-	12 o come quando lanciato il dardo verso il bersaglio, l'aria tagliata rifluisce subito su se stessa, cosicché non si può riconoscere il suo percorso,
13 Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness."	13 così anche noi, appena nati, siamo venuti meno: non abbiamo mostrato alcun segno di virtù, e ci siamo consumati nella nostra malvagità!".
14 Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day.	14 La speranza dell'empio è come pula portata via dal vento, come tenue schiuma sospinta dalla bufera; è dispersa come fumo dal vento e si dilegua come il ricordo dell'ospite di un sol giorno.
15 But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High.	15 I giusti, invece, vivono in eterno, la loro ricompensa è presso il Signore e il Signore si prende cura di loro.
16 Therefore shall they receive the splendid crown, the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the LORD- For he shall shelter them with his right hand, and protect them with his arm.	16 Per questo riceveranno una magnifica corona regale e uno splendido diadema dalla mano del Signore, perché li proteggerà con la destra e con il braccio li difenderà.
17 He shall take his zeal for armor and he shall arm creation to requite the enemy;	17 Assumerà come armatura il suo zelo e userà come arma il creato per far vendetta dei nemici.
18 He shall don justice for a breastplate and shall wear sure judgment for a helmet;	18 Indosserà come corazza la giustizia e cingerà come elmo un giudizio senza finzione.
19 He shall take invincible rectitude as a shield	19 Assumerà come scudo l'invincibile santità,
20 and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy.	20 affilerà come spada un'ira inesorabile e il mondo combatterà con lui contro gli insensati.
21 Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark;	21 Partiranno saette ben aggiustate e come da un arco ben teso, dalle nubi, si slanceranno contro il bersaglio;
22 and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow;	22 dalla fionda saranno scagliate grandini piene di collera; infurierà contro di loro l'acqua del mare e i fiumi strariperanno senza pietà.
23 A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates.	23 Si leverà su di loro lo Spirito dell'Onnipotente, li disperderà come un uragano: l'iniquità renderà deserta tutta la terra e la malvagità travolgerà i troni dei potenti.
