1 Wine is arrogant, strong drink is riotous; none who goes astray for it is wise.	1 Ein Zuchtloser ist der Wein, ein Lärmer das Bier; wer sich hierin verfehlt, wird nie weise.
2 The dread of the king is as when a lion roars; he who incurs his anger forfeits his life.	2 Wie das Knurren des Löwen ist der Grimm des Königs; wer ihn erzürnt, verwirkt sein Leben.
3 It is honorable for a man to shun strife, while every fool starts a quarrel.	3 Es ehrt den Menschen, vom Streit abzulassen, jeder Tor aber bricht los.
4 In seedtime the sluggard plows not; when he looks for the harvest, it is not there.	4 Der Faule pflügt nicht im Herbst; sucht er in der Erntezeit, so ist nichts da.
5 The intention in the human heart is like water far below the surface, but the man of intelligence draws it forth.	5 Ein tiefes Wasser sind die Pläne im Herzen des Menschen, doch der Verständige schöpft es herauf.
6 Many are declared to be men of virtue: but who can find one worthy of trust?	6 Viele Menschen rühmen sich ihrer Güte, aber wer findet einen, auf den Verlass ist?
7 When a man walks in integrity and justice, happy are his children after him!	7 Wer als Gerechter unbescholten seinen Weg geht: Wohl den Kindern, die er hinterlässt.
8 A king seated on the throne of judgment dispels all evil with his glance.	8 Ein König auf dem Richterstuhl sondert mit seinem Scharfblick alles Böse aus.
9 Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am cleansed of my sin"?	9 Wer kann sagen: Ich habe mein Herz geläutert, rein bin ich von meiner Sünde?
10 Varying weights, varying measures, are both an abomination to the LORD.	10 Zweierlei Gewicht und zweierlei Maß, beide sind dem Herrn ein Gräuel.
11 Even by his manners the child betrays whether his conduct is innocent and right.	11 An seinem Treiben lässt schon der Knabe erkennen, ob sein Tun lauter und redlich sein wird.
12 The ear that hears, and the eye that sees-- the LORD has made them both.	12 Das Ohr, das hört, und das Auge, das sieht, der Herr hat sie beide geschaffen.
13 Love not sleep, lest you be reduced to poverty; eyes wide open mean abundant food.	13 Liebe nicht den Schlaf, damit du nicht arm wirst; halte deine Augen offen und du hast Brot genug.
14 "Bad, bad!" says the buyer; but once he has gone his way, he boasts.	14 Schlecht, schlecht, sagt der Käufer; geht er aber weg, so rühmt er sich.
15 Like gold or a wealth of corals, wise lips are a precious ornament.	15 Gold gibt es und viele Perlen, ein kostbarer Schmuck aber sind verständige Lippen.
16 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for strangers yield it up!	16 Nimm ihm das Kleid, denn er hat für einen andern gebürgt, fremder Leute wegen pfände bei ihm!
17 The bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.	17 Süß schmeckt dem Menschen das Brot der Lüge, hernach aber füllt sich sein Mund mit Kieseln.
18 Plans made after advice succeed; so with wise guidance wage your war.	18 Pläne kommen durch Beratung zustande. Darum führe den Kampf mit Überlegung!
19 A newsmonger reveals secrets; so have nothing to do with a babbler!	19 Geheimnisse verrät, wer als Verleumder umhergeht. Darum lass dich nicht ein mit einem Schwätzer!
20 If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.	20 Wer seinem Vater flucht und seiner Mutter, dessen Lampe erlischt zur Zeit der Finsternis.
21 Possessions gained hastily at the outset will in the end not be blessed.	21 Ein Besitz, schnell errafft am Anfang, ist nicht gesegnet an seinem Ende.
22 Say not, "I will repay evil!" Trust in the LORD and he will help you.	22 Sag nicht: Ich will das Böse vergelten. Vertrau auf den Herrn, er wird dir helfen.
23 Varying weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good.	23 Ein Gräuel ist dem Herrn zweierlei Gewicht, eine falsche Waage ist nicht recht.
24 Man's steps are from the LORD; how, then, can a man understand his way?	24 Der Herr lenkt die Schritte eines jeden. Wie könnte der Mensch seinen Weg verstehen?
25 Rashly to pledge a sacred gift is a trap for a man, or to regret a vow once made.	25 Eine Falle ist es, unbedacht zu rufen: Geweiht!, und erst nach dem Gelübde zu überlegen.
26 A wise king winnows the wicked, and threshes them under the cartwheel.	26 Ein weiser König sondert die Frevler aus und vergilt ihnen ihre Untat.
27 A lamp from the LORD is the breath of man; it searches through all his inmost being.	27 Der Herr wacht über den Atem des Menschen, er durchforscht alle Kammern des Leibes.
28 Kindness and piety safeguard the king, and he upholds his throne by justice.	28 Güte und Treue behüten den König, er stützt seinen Thron durch Güte.
29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the dignity of old men is gray hair.	29 Der Ruhm der Jungen ist ihre Kraft, die Zier der Alten ihr graues Haar.
30 Evil is cleansed away by bloody lashes, and a scourging to the inmost being.	30 Blutige Striemen läutern den Bösen und Schläge die Kammern des Leibes.
