NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
For the leader. A psalm of David.1 [For the choirmaster Psalm Of David] Blessed is anyone who cares for the poor and the weak; in timeof trouble Yahweh rescues him.
Happy those concerned for the lowly and poor; when misfortune strikes, the LORD delivers them.2 Yahweh protects him, gives him life and happiness on earth. Do not abandon him to his enemies'pleasure!
The LORD keeps and preserves them, makes them happy in the land, and does not betray them to their enemies.3 Yahweh sustains him on his bed of sickness; you transform altogether the bed where he lies sick.
The LORD sustains them on their sickbed, allays the malady when they are ill.4 For my part I said, 'Yahweh, take pity on me! Cure me for I have sinned against you.'
Once I prayed, "LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, I have sinned against you.5 My enemies speak to me only of disaster, 'When wil he die and his name disappear?'
My enemies say the worst of me: 'When will that one die and be forgotten?'6 When people come to see me their talk is hol ow, when they get out they spread the news with spite intheir hearts.
When people come to visit me, they speak without sincerity. Their hearts store up malice; they leave and spread their vicious lies.7 Al who hate me whisper together about me and reckon I deserve the misery I suffer.
My foes all whisper against me; they imagine the worst about me:8 'A fatal sickness has a grip on him; now that he is down, he will never get up again.'
I have a deadly disease, they say; I will never rise from my sickbed.9 Even my trusted friend on whom I relied, who shared my table, takes advantage of me.
Even the friend who had my trust, who shared my table, has scorned me.10 But you, Yahweh, take pity on me! Put me on my feet and I wil give them their due.
But you, LORD, have mercy and raise me up that I may repay them as they deserve."11 This wil convince me that you delight in me, if my enemy no longer exults over me.
By this I know you are pleased with me, that my enemy no longer jeers at me.12 Then you wil keep me unscathed, and set me in your presence for ever.
For my integrity you have supported me and let me stand in your presence forever.13 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from eternity to eternity. Amen, Amen.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from all eternity and forever. Amen. Amen.
