A song of ascents. Much have they oppressed me from my youth, now let Israel say.1 A Canticle in steps. From the depths, I have cried out to you, O Lord.
Much have they oppressed me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed.2 O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
Upon my back the plowers plowed, as they traced their long furrows.3 If you, O Lord, were to heed iniquities, who, O Lord, could persevere?
But the just LORD cut me free from the ropes of the yoke of the wicked.4 For with you, there is forgiveness, and because of your law, I persevered with you, Lord. My soul has persevered in his word.
May they be scattered in disgrace, all who hate Zion.5 My soul has hoped in the Lord.
May they be like grass on the rooftops withered in early growth,6 From the morning watch, even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
Never to fill the reaper's hands, nor the arms of the binders of sheaves,7 For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him there is bountiful redemption.
With none passing by to call out: "The blessing of the LORD be upon you! We bless you in the name of the LORD!"8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
