A song of ascents. Of David. I Had not the LORD been with us, let Israel say,1 A Canticle in steps. Those who trust in the Lord will be like the mountain of Zion. He will not be disturbed for eternity, who dwells
Had not the LORD been with us, when people rose against us,2 in Jerusalem. Mountains surround it. And the Lord surrounds his people, from this time forward and even forever.
They would have swallowed us alive, for their fury blazed against us.3 For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners to remain over the lot of the just, so that the just may not extend their hands toward iniquity.
The waters would have engulfed us, the torrent overwhelmed us;4 Do good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright of heart.
seething waters would have drowned us.5 But those who turn away into obligation, the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.
Blessed be the LORD, who did not leave us to be torn by their fangs.
We escaped with our lives like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare was broken and we escaped.
Our help is the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.
