A song of ascents. Of David. I Had not the LORD been with us, let Israel say, | 1 A Canticle in steps. Those who trust in the Lord will be like the mountain of Zion. He will not be disturbed for eternity, who dwells |
Had not the LORD been with us, when people rose against us, | 2 in Jerusalem. Mountains surround it. And the Lord surrounds his people, from this time forward and even forever. |
They would have swallowed us alive, for their fury blazed against us. | 3 For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners to remain over the lot of the just, so that the just may not extend their hands toward iniquity. |
The waters would have engulfed us, the torrent overwhelmed us; | 4 Do good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright of heart. |
seething waters would have drowned us. | 5 But those who turn away into obligation, the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel. |
Blessed be the LORD, who did not leave us to be torn by their fangs.
We escaped with our lives like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare was broken and we escaped.
Our help is the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. |
