NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Hiram, king of Tyre, sent envoys to David along with masons and carpenters, and cedar wood to build him a house.1 Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri nuntios ad David et ligna cedrina et artifices parietum lignorumque, ut aedificarent ei domum.
David now understood that the LORD had truly confirmed him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was greatly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.2 Cognovitque David quod confirmasset eum Dominus in regem super Israel et sublevatum esset regnum suum propter populum eius Israel.
David took other wives in Jerusalem and became the father of more sons and daughters.3 Accepit quoque David alias uxores in Ierusalem genuitque filios et filias;
These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,4 et haec nomina eorum, qui nati sunt ei in Ierusalem: Samua et Sobab, Nathan et Salomon,
Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,5 Iebahar et Elisua et Eliphalet,
Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,6 Noga quoque et Napheg et Iaphia,
Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.7 Elisama et Beeliada et Eliphalet.
When the Philistines had heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, they went up in unison to seek him out. But when David heard of this, he marched out against them.8 Audientes autem Philisthim quod unctus esset David in regem super universum Israel, ascenderunt omnes, ut quaererent eum; quod cum audisset David, egressus est obviam eis.
Meanwhile the Philistines had come and raided the valley of Rephaim.9 Porro Philisthim venientes diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.
David inquired of God, "Shall I advance against the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my power?" The LORD answered him, "Advance, for I will deliver them into your power."10 Consuluitque David Deum dicens: “ Si ascendam contra Philisthaeos, et si trades eos in manu mea? ”. Et dixit ei Dominus: “ Ascende, et tradam eos in manu tua ”.
They advanced, therefore, to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, "God has used me to break through my enemies just as water breaks through a dam." Therefore that place was called Baal-perazim.11 Cumque illi ascendissent in Baalpharasim, percussit eos ibi David et dixit: “ Dirupit Deus inimicos meos per manum meam sicut dirumpuntur aquae ”. Et idcirco vocatum est nomen loci illius Baalpharasim (id est Dominus diruptionum).
The Philistines had left their gods there, and David ordered them to be burnt.12 Dereliqueruntque ibi deos suos, quos David iussit exuri.
Once again the Philistines raided the valley,13 Alia etiam vice Philisthim irruerunt et diffusi sunt in valle;
and again David inquired of God. But God answered him: "Do not try to pursue them, but go around them and come upon them from the direction of the mastic trees.14 consuluitque rursum David Deum, et dixit ei Deus: “ Non ascendas post eos; circumdabis eos et venies contra illos ex adverso arborum celthium;
When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mastic trees, then go forth to battle, for God has already gone before you to strike the army of the Philistines."15 cumque audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine arborum celthium, tunc egredieris ad bellum; egressus est enim Deus ante te, ut percutias castra Philisthim ”.
David did as God commanded him, and they routed the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.16 Fecit ergo David, sicut praeceperat ei Deus, et percussit castra Philisthinorum de Gabaon usque Gazer.
Thus David's fame was spread abroad through every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.17 Divulgatumque est nomen David in universis regionibus, et Dominus dedit pavorem eius super omnes gentes.
