1 Then Joseph gave his head steward these instructions: "Fill the men's bags with as much food as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his bag.	1 Poi egli ordinò al sovrintendente della sua casa: «Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere e metti il denaro di ciascuno alla bocca del suo sacco.
2 In the mouth of the youngest one's bag put also my silver goblet, together with the money for his rations." The steward carried out Joseph's instructions.	2 Insieme metterai la mia coppa d’argento alla bocca del sacco del più giovane, con il denaro del suo grano». Quegli fece secondo quanto Giuseppe aveva detto.
3 At daybreak the men and their donkeys were sent off.	3 Quando si fece giorno, i nostri uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini.
4 They had not gone far out of the city when Joseph said to his head steward: "Go at once after the men! When you overtake them, say to them, 'Why did you repay good with evil? Why did you steal the silver goblet from me?	4 Ma erano appena usciti dalla città e non si erano ancora allontanati, quando Giuseppe disse al sovrintendente della sua casa: «Su, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e di’ loro: “Perché avete reso male per bene?
5 It is the very one from which my master drinks and which he uses for divination. What you have done is wrong.'"	5 Non è forse questa la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e della quale si serve per la divinazione? Avete fatto male agendo così!”»
6 When the steward overtook them and repeated these words to them,	6 Quegli li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole.
7 they remonstrated with him: "How can my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!	7 Allora quelli gli dissero: «Perché il mio signore dice queste cose? Lungi dai tuoi servitori il fare una tale cosa!
8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money that we found in the mouths of our bags. Why, then, would we steal silver or gold from your master's house?	8 Ecco, il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi te lo abbiamo riportato dalla terra di Canaan; come potremmo rubare argento od oro dalla casa del tuo signore?
9 If any of your servants is found to have the goblet, he shall die, and as for the rest of us, we shall become my lord's slaves."	9 Quello dei tuoi servitori presso il quale si troverà sarà messo a morte; noi stessi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore».
10 But he replied, "Even though it ought to be as you propose, only the one who is found to have it shall become my slave, and the rest of you shall be exonerated."	10 Quegli disse: «Ebbene, sarà come avete detto: colui presso il quale si troverà, sarà mio schiavo e voi sarete innocenti».
11 Then each of them eagerly lowered his bag to the ground and opened it;	11 Si affrettarono dunque a scaricare a terra ciascuno il proprio sacco e ciascuno aprì il proprio sacco.
12 and when a search was made, starting with the oldest and ending with the youngest, the goblet turned up in Benjamin's bag.	12 Quegli li frugò, cominciando dal maggiore e terminando con il minore, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamin.
13 At this, they tore their clothes. Then, when each man had reloaded his donkey, they returned to the city.	13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il proprio asino e ritornarono nella città.
14 As Judah and his brothers reentered Joseph's house, he was still there; so they flung themselves on the ground before him.	14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe che si trovava ancora là e si gettarono in terra davanti a lui.
15 "How could you do such a thing?" Joseph asked them. "You should have known that such a man as I could discover by divination what happened."	15 Giuseppe disse loro: «Che azione avete commesso! Non sapete che un uomo come me sa praticare la divinazione?»
16 Judah replied: "What can we say to my lord? How can we plead or how try to prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants' guilt. Here we are, then, the slaves of my lord--the rest of us no less than the one in whose possession the goblet was found."	16 Giuda disse: «Che cosa diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio è venuto a trovare la colpa dei tuoi servitori... Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, tanto noi quanto colui in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa».
17 "Far be it from me to act thus!" said Joseph. "Only the one in whose possession the goblet was found shall become my slave; the rest of you may go back safe and sound to your father."	17 Ma egli rispose: «Lungi da me il far ciò! Sarà mio schiavo soltanto l’uomo in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa; quanto a voi, ritornate in pace da vostro padre».
18 Judah then stepped up to him and said: "I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak earnestly to my lord, and do not become angry with your servant, for you are the equal of Pharaoh.	18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: «Mio signore, sia permesso al tuo servitore di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; e non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servitore, perché tu e il Faraone siete tutt’uno!
19 My lord asked your servants, 'Have you a father, or another brother?'	19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servitori: “Avete un padre o un fratello?”;
20 So we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and a young brother, the child of his old age. This one's full brother is dead, and since he is the only one by that mother who is left, his father dotes on him.'	20 e noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Abbiamo un padre vecchio e un figlio che gli è nato in vecchiaia, ancora giovane; suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto il solo dei figli di sua madre e suo padre lo ama”.
21 Then you told your servants, 'Bring him down to me that my eyes may look on him.'	21 Tu avevi detto ai tuoi servitori: “Conducetelo qui da me perché lo possa vedere con i miei occhi”.
22 We replied to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; his father would die if he were to leave him.'	22 Noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Il giovane non può abbandonare suo padre; se lascerà suo padre, questi morirà”.
23 But you told your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes back with you, you shall not come into my presence again.'	23 Ma tu avevi detto ai tuoi servitori: “Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza”.
24 When we returned to your servant our father, we reported to him the words of my lord.	24 Quando dunque fummo tornati dal tuo servitore mio padre gli abbiamo riferito le parole del mio signore.
25 "Later, our father told us to come back and buy some food for the family.	25 Nostro padre: ha detto: “Tornate a comperare per noi un po’ di viveri”.
26 So we reminded him, 'We cannot go down there; only if our youngest brother is with us can we go, for we may not see the man if our youngest brother is not with us.'	26 E noi abbiamo risposto: “Non possiamo andare laggiù: se c’è con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo laggiù; non possiamo essere ammessi alla presenza: di quell’uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore”.
27 Then your servant our father said to us, 'As you know, my wife bore me two sons.	27 Allora il tuo servitore mio; padre ci ha detto: “Voi sapete che due erano coloro che mi aveva partorito mia moglie.
28 One of them, however, disappeared, and I had to conclude that he must have been torn to pieces by wild beasts; I have not seen him since.	28 Uno mi lasciò e io dissi: Certo è stato sbranato! E da allora non l’ho più visto. —
29 If you now take this one away from me too, and some disaster befalls him, you will send my white head down to the nether world in grief.'	29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli dovesse capitare una disgrazia, voi precipitereste la mia canizie amareggiata nello Sheol!”.
30 "If then the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, whose very life is bound up with his, he will die as soon as he sees that the boy is missing;	30 Ora, quando io arriverò dal tuo servitore mio padre e il giovane non sarà con noi, mentre la vita dell’uno è legata alla vita dell’altro,
31 and your servants will thus send the white head of our father down to the nether world in grief.	31 appena egli vedrà che il giovane non è con noi, morirà e i tuoi servitori avranno precipitato la canizie del tuo servitore nostro padre sconsolata nello Sheol.
32 Besides, I, your servant, got the boy from his father by going surety for him, saying, 'If I fail to bring him back to you, father, you can hold it against me forever.'	32 Ma il tuo servitore si è reso garante del giovane pressò mio padre dicendo: “Se non te lo ricondurrò; sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita”.
33 Let me, your servant, therefore, remain in place of the boy as the slave of my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.	33 Ora, lascia dunque che il tuo servitore rimanga schiavo del mio signore invece del giovane e il giovane ritorni lassù con i suoi fratelli;
34 How could I go back to my father if the boy were not with me? I could not bear to see the anguish that would overcome my father."	34 infatti come potrei ritornare da mio padre senza avere con me il giovane? Io non veda il male che colpirebbe mio padre!»
