NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Some time afterward, the royal cupbearer and baker gave offense to their lord, the king of Egypt.1 After this, it came to pass, that two eunuchs, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, offended their lord.
Pharaoh was angry with his two courtiers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,2 And Pharao being angry with them (now the one was chief butler, the other chief baker)
and he put them in custody in the house of the chief steward (the same jail where Joseph was confined).3 He sent them to the prison of the commander of the soldiers, in which Joseph also was prisoner,
The chief steward assigned Joseph to them, and he became their attendant. After they had been in custody for some time,4 But the keeper of the prison delivered them to Joseph, and he served them. Some little time passed, and they were kept in custody.
the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt who were confined in the jail both had dreams on the same night, each dream with its own meaning.5 And they both dreamed a dream the same night, according to the interpretation agreeing to themselves:
When Joseph came to them in the morning, he noticed that they looked disturbed.6 And when Joseph was come in to them in the morning, and saw them sad,
So he asked Pharaoh's courtiers who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"7 He asked them, saying: Why is your oountenance sadder to day than usual?
They answered him, "We have had dreams, but there is no one to interpret them for us." Joseph said to them, "Surely, interpretations come from God. Please tell the dreams to me."8 They answered: We have dreamed a dream, and there is nobody to interpret it to us. And Joseph said to them: Both not interpretation belong to God? Tell me what you have dreamed. g The chief butler first told his dream: I saw before me a vine,
Then the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. "In my dream," he said, "I saw a vine in front of me,9 dummy verses inserted by amos
and on the vine were three branches. It had barely budded when its blossoms came out, and its clusters ripened into grapes.10 On which were three branches, which by little and little sent out buds, and after the blossoms brought forth ripe grapes :
Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes, pressed them out into his cup, and put it in Pharaoh's hand."11 And the cup of Pharao was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into the cup which I held, and I gave the cup to Pharao.
Joseph said to him: "This is what it means. The three branches are three days;12 Joseph answered: This is the interpretation of the dream: The three branches are yet three days:
within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your post. You will be handing Pharaoh his cup as you formerly used to do when you were his cupbearer.13 After which Pharao will remember thy service, and will restore thee to thy former place: and thou shah present him the cup according to thy office, as before thou wast wont to do.
So if you will still remember, when all is well with you, that I was here with you, please do me the favor of mentioning me to Pharaoh, to get me out of this place.14 Only remember me, when it shall be well with thee, and do me this kindness: to put Pharao in mind to take me out of this prison:
The truth is that I was kidnaped from the land of the Hebrews, and here I have not done anything for which I should have been put into a dungeon."15 dummy verses inserted by amos
When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given this favorable interpretation, he said to him: "I too had a dream. In it I had three wicker baskets on my head;16 For I was stolen away out of the land I of the Hebrews, and here without any fault was cast into the dungeon.
in the top one were all kinds of bakery products for Pharaoh, but the birds were pecking at them out of the basket on my head."
Joseph said to him in reply: "This is what it means. The three baskets are three days;18 The chief baker seeing that he had wisely interpreted the dream, said: I also dreamed a dream, That I bed three baskets of meal upon my heed:
within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and have you impaled on a stake, and the birds will be pecking the flesh from your body."19 And that in one basket which was uppermost, I carried all meats that are made by the art of baking, and that the birds ate out of it.
And in fact, on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, when he gave a banquet to all his staff, with his courtiers around him, he lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and chief baker.20 Joseph answered: This is the interpretation of the dream: The three baskets are yet three days:
He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, so that he again handed the cup to Pharaoh;21 After which Pharao will take thy hand from thee, and hang thee on a cross, and the birds shall tear thy flesh.
but the chief baker he impaled-just as Joseph had told them in his interpretation.22 The third day after this was the birthday of Pharao: and he made a. great feast for his servants, and at the banquet remembered the chief butler, and the chief baker.
Yet the chief cupbearer gave no thought to Joseph; he had forgotten him.23 And he restored the one to his place to present him the cup:
The other he hanged on a gibbet, that the truth of the interpreter might be shewn.
