1 ויקבצו כל ישראל אל דויד חברונה לאמר הנה עצמך ובשרך אנחנו	1 Al Israel then ral ied to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.
2 גם תמול גם שלשום גם בהיות שאול מלך אתה המוציא והמביא את ישראל ויאמר יהוה אלהיך לך אתה תרעה את עמי את ישראל ואתה תהיה נגיד על עמי ישראל	2 In days past when Saul was king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and Yahweh your Godpromised you, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of my people Israel." '
3 ויבאו כל זקני ישראל אל המלך חברונה ויכרת להם דויד ברית בחברון לפני יהוה וימשחו את דויד למלך על ישראל כדבר יהוה ביד שמואל	3 So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a pact with them in Yahweh'spresence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel, in accordance with the word of Yahweh throughSamuel.
4 וילך דויד וכל ישראל ירושלם היא יבוס ושם היבוסי ישבי הארץ	4 David and al Israel then marched on Jerusalem (that is to say, Jebus); the inhabitants of the territorywere the Jebusites.
5 ויאמרו ישבי יבוס לדויד לא תבוא הנה וילכד דויד את מצדת ציון היא עיר דויד	5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You wil not get in here.' But David captured the citadel ofZion, that is, the City of David.
6 ויאמר דויד כל מכה יבוסי בראשונה יהיה לראש ולשר ויעל בראשונה יואב בן צרויה ויהי לראש	6 David said, 'The first man to kill a Jebusite will be made army commander and chief.' Joab son ofZeruiah was the first man to go up, and was made commander of the army.
7 וישב דויד במצד על כן קראו לו עיר דויד	7 David went to live in the citadel, and that is how it came to be cal ed the City of David.
8 ויבן העיר מסביב מן המלוא ועד הסביב ויואב יחיה את שאר העיר	8 He then built a wal round the city, al round, beginning from the Mil o, and Joab restored the rest ofthe city.
9 וילך דויד הלוך וגדול ויהוה צבאות עמו	9 Thus David grew stronger and stronger, for Yahweh Sabaoth was with him.
10 ואלה ראשי הגבורים אשר לדויד המתחזקים עמו במלכותו עם כל ישראל להמליכו כדבר יהוה על ישראל	10 These are David's principal champions who joined forces with him in his kingdom, with al Israel, tomake him king in accordance with the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.
11 ואלה מספר הגברים אשר לדויד ישבעם בן חכמוני ראש השלושים הוא עורר את חניתו על שלש מאות חלל בפעם אחת	11 This is the roll of David's champions: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni, head of the Three; he it was whobrandished his spear over three hundred men whom he had kil ed at one time.
12 ואחריו אלעזר בן דודו האחוחי הוא בשלושה הגברים	12 Next, there was Eleazar son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three champions.
13 הוא היה עם דויד בפס דמים והפלשתים נאספו שם למלחמה ותהי חלקת השדה מלאה שעורים והעם נסו מפני פלשתים	13 He was with David at Pas-Dammim when the Philistines mustered for battle there. There was a fieldful of barley there; and the people fled from the Philistines.
14 ויתיצבו בתוך החלקה ויצילוה ויכו את פלשתים ויושע יהוה תשועה גדולה	14 And they took their stand in the middle of the field, held it and cut down the Philistines; and Yahwehbrought about a great victory.
15 וירדו שלושה מן השלושים ראש על הצר אל דויד אל מערת עדלם ומחנה פלשתים חנה בעמק רפאים	15 Three members of the Thirty went down to David at the rock near the Cave of Adul am while acompany of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of the Rephaim.
16 ודויד אז במצודה ונציב פלשתים אז בבית לחם	16 David was then in the stronghold and there was a Philistine garrison in Bethlehem.
17 ויתאו דויד ויאמר מי ישקני מים מבור בית לחם אשר בשער	17 Longingly, David said, 'If only someone would fetch me a drink of water from the wel that stands bythe gate at Bethlehem!'
18 ויבקעו השלשה במחנה פלשתים וישאבו מים מבור בית לחם אשר בשער וישאו ויבאו אל דויד ולא אבה דויד לשתותם וינסך אתם ליהוה	18 At this the three champions, forcing their way through the Philistine camp, drew water from the welthat stands by the gate of Bethlehem and, bringing it away, presented it to David. David, however, would notdrink any of it, but poured it out as a libation to Yahweh.
19 ויאמר חלילה לי מאלהי מעשות זאת הדם האנשים האלה אשתה בנפשותם כי בנפשותם הביאום ולא אבה לשתותם אלה עשו שלשת הגבורים	19 'God preserve me', he said, 'from doing such a thing! Am I to drink these men's blood? For at the riskof their lives they brought it.' And so he would not drink. Such were the deeds of the three champions.
20 ואבשי אחי יואב הוא היה ראש השלושה והוא עורר את חניתו על שלש מאות חלל ולא שם בשלושה	20 Abishai, brother of Joab, was leader of the Thirty. He it was who brandished his spear over threehundred men whom he had killed, winning himself a name among the Thirty.
21 מן השלושה בשנים נכבד ויהי להם לשר ועד השלושה לא בא	21 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty and became their captain, but he was not equal to theThree.
22 בניה בן יהוידע בן איש חיל רב פעלים מן קבצאל הוא הכה את שני אריאל מואב והוא ירד והכה את הארי בתוך הבור ביום השלג	22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada from Kabzeel was the hero of many exploits; he it was who slaughtered twoformidable Moabites and, one snowy day, climbed down and slaughtered the lion in the storage-wel .
23 והוא הכה את האיש המצרי איש מדה חמש באמה וביד המצרי חנית כמנור ארגים וירד אליו בשבט ויגזל את החנית מיד המצרי ויהרגהו בחניתו	23 He also slaughtered an Egyptian, a man who was seven and a half feet tal . The Egyptian was armedwith a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, but he took him on with a staff, tore the spear from the Egyptian'shand and kil ed the man with it.
24 אלה עשה בניהו בן יהוידע ולו שם בשלושה הגברים	24 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, winning him a name among the thirtychampions.
25 מן השלושים הנו נכבד הוא ואל השלושה לא בא וישימהו דויד על משמעתו	25 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty, but he was not equal to the Three. David put him incommand of his bodyguard.
26 וגבורי החילים עשה אל אחי יואב אלחנן בן דודו מבית לחם	26 The military champions were: Asahel brother of Joab; Elhanan son of Dodo, of Bethlehem;
27 שמות ההרורי חלץ הפלוני	27 Shammoth of Haror; Helez the Pelonite;
28 עירא בן עקש התקועי אביעזר הענתותי	28 Ira son of Ikkesh, of Tekoa; Abiezer of Anathoth;
29 סבכי החשתי עילי האחוחי	29 Sibbecai of Hushah; Ilai of Ahoh;
30 מהרי הנטפתי חלד בן בענה הנטופתי	30 Maharai of Netophah; Heled son of Baanah, of Netophah.
31 איתי בן ריבי מגבעת בני בנימן בניה הפרעתני	31 Ithai son of Ribai, of Gibeah in Benjamin. Benaiah of Pirathon;
32 חורי מנחלי געש אביאל הערבתי	32 Hurai of the Torrents of Gaash; Abiel of Beth-ha-Arabah;
33 עזמות הבחרומי אליחבא השעלבני	33 Azmaveth of Bahurim; Eliahba of Shaalbon;
34 בני השם הגזוני יונתן בן שגה ההררי	34 the sons of Hashem of Gizon; Jonathan son of Shagee, of Harar;
35 אחיאם בן שכר ההררי אליפל בן אור	35 Ahiam son of Sachar, of Harar; Eliphelet son of Ur;
36 חפר המכרתי אחיה הפלני	36 Hepher of Mecherah; Ahijah the Pelonite;
37 חצרו הכרמלי נערי בן אזבי	37 Hezro of Carmel; Naarai son of Ezbai;
38 יואל אחי נתן מבחר בן הגרי	38 Joel brother of Nathan; Mibhar son of Hagri;
39 צלק העמוני נחרי הברתי נשא כלי יואב בן צרויה	39 Zelek the Ammonite; Naharai of Beeroth, armour-bearer to Joab son of Zeruiah;
40 עירא היתרי גרב היתרי	40 Ira of Jattir; Gareb of Jattir;
41 אוריה החתי זבד בן אחלי	41 Uriah the Hittite; Zabad son of Ahlai;
42 עדינא בן שיזא הראובני ראש לראובני ועליו שלושים	42 Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, chief of the Reubenites and commander of the Thirty;
43 חנן בן מעכה ויושפט המתני	43 Hanan son of Maacah; Joshaphat the Mithnite;
44 עזיא העשתרתי שמע ויעואל בני חותם הערערי	44 Uzzia of Ashteroth; Shama and Jeiel sons of Hotham of Aroer;
45 ידיעאל בן שמרי ויחא אחיו התיצי	45 Jediael son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite;
46 אליאל המחוים ויריבי ויושויה בני אלנעם ויתמה המואבי	46 Eliel the Mahavite; Jeribai and Joshaviah sons of Elnaam; Ithmah the Moabite;
47 אליאל ועובד ויעשיאל המצביה	47 Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel of Zobah.
