1 L'argento ha un principio nelle sue vene, e l'oro ha un luogo dov'ei si fonde.	1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.
2 Dalla terra cavasi il ferro: e la pietra sciolta col fuoco si cangia in rame.	2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.
3 Egli fissa alle tenebre la lor durazione, e la fine investiga di tutte le cose, ed anche la pietra ascosa nella caligine, e nell'ombra di morte.	3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.
4 Un torrente separa dai viaggiatori, e ad esse non si appressa il piede del povero, e sono in luoghi inaccessibili.	4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.
5 Una terra, dal cui seno nasceva del pane, è disertata dal fuoco.	5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.
6 Havvi un luogo, di cui i sassi sono saffiri, e le sue zolle sono oro.	6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.
7 Uccello non ne conobbe la strada, e l'occhio dell'avoltoio non giunse a discernerla.	7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;
8 Ella non fu battuta da' figliuoli de' mercatanti, né vi passò la lionessa.	8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.

12 Ma dov' è, che trovisi la sapienza? e la sede dell'intelligenza dov'è?	12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
13 Il pregio di lei non è conosciuto dall'uomo, né ella si trova nella terra di quei, che vivono delle delizie.	13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.
14 L'abisso dice: Meco ella non è, e il mare confessa: Ella non è con me.	14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.
15 Ella non si compera coll'oro più fino; né cambiò fassene a peso d'argento.	15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,
16 Ella non sarà messa a paragone colle tinte preziose delle Indie, né colla pietra sardonica più pregiata, né col saffiro.	16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.
17 Non sarà stimato eguale a lei l'oro, od il cristallo, né sarà data in cambio per vasi di pretto oro:	17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,
18 Le più eccelse, e pregiate cose non son da rammentarsi in suo paraggio: ma occulto è il luogo onde estraggesi la sapienza.	18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!
19 Non si agguaglerà a lei il topazio d'Etiopia, né le saran poste in confronto le tinture più splendide.	19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.
20 Donde adunque vien mai la sapienza, e quale è la sede della intelligenza?	20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
21 Ella è ascosa agli sguardi di tutti i viventi, ella è ignota anche agli uccelli dell'aria.	21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.
22 La perdizione, e la morte hanno detto: Alle nostre orecchie è giunta la fama di lei.	22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'
23 La via per trovarla è nota a Dio, ed egli sa dov'ella dimori.	23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.

28 E all'uomo disse: Ecco che il timor del Signore egli è la stessa sapienza, e la fuga del male ell'è la vera intelligenza.	28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'
