1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.	1 Cercate di conseguire la carità; aspirate ure ai doni spirituali, ma specialmente al dono della profezia.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.	2 Poiché colui che parla in lingue, non parla a uomini ma a Dio; nessuno, infatti, lo comprende, e in ispirito dice cose misteriose.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.	3 Al contrario, colui che profetizza parla a uomini, li edifica, li esorta e consola.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.	4 Chi parla in lingue, edifica solo se stesso; ma chi profetizza, edifica l’assemblea.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.	5 lo vorrei che tutti parlaste in lingue, ma ben più che aveste il dono della profezia. Sì, chi profetizza è superiore a colui che parla in lingue, a meno che questi non le interpreti affinché l’assemblea ne tragga edificazione.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?	6 Giacchè se io stesso, supponiamo, venissi da voi e vi parlassi in lingue, di quale utilità vi sarei, se non vi dicessi qualche cosa o per via di rivelazione o di scienza o di profezia o di insegnamento?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?	7 Così per gli strumenti inanimati che, come il flauto o la cetra, producono un suono: come riconoscere l’aria che viene suonata col flauto o sulla cetra se i suoni non sono distinti?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?	8 Parimente, se la tromba emette un suono confuso, chi può prepararsi al combattimento?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.	9 Così è pure di voi: se, parlando in lingue, non pronunciate parole chiare, si potrà comprendere ciò che dite? Starete certamente a parlare al vento!
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.	10 Vi sono chissà quanti generi di linguaggi nel mondo e nessuno è inintelligibile.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.	11 Ma se io non conosco il valore dei termini sarò come uno straniero per colui che parla e quello che parla sarà come uno straniero per me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.	12 Così anche voi: giacchè siete bramosi di doni spirituali cercate pure di averne in abbondanza, ma in vista dell’edificazione dell’assemblea.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.	13 Perciò chi parla in lingue preghi per avere il dono di interpretarle.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.	14 Infatti, se io prego in lingua il mio spirito prega, ma la mia intelligenza non ne ricava frutto.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.	15 Che concludere dunque? Pregherò sì con lo spirito, ma pregherò anche con l’intelligenza; canterò inni con lo spirito, ma canterò pure con l’intelligenza.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?	16 Diversamente, se tu solo in ispirito innalzi lodi, come potrà rispondere «Amen!» al tuo rendimento di grazie colui che occupa il posto del semplice fedele? Non sa che cosa dici!
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.	17 Il tuo è certamente un bel rendimento di grazie, ma egli non ne può trarre edificazione alcuna.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:	18 Grazie a Dio, io parlo in lingue più di tutti voi.
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.	19 Ma nell'adunanza dei fedeli preferisco dire cinque parole con la mia intelligenza per istruire che gli altri, che diecimila in virtù del dono delle lingue.
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.	20 Fratelli, non siate fanciulli in fatto di senno; o meglio, quanto a malizia siate è bambini, ma quanto a senno siate uomini maturi;
21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.	21 Nella Legge non sta scritto: Per mezzo di uomini di altra lingua e mediante labbra di stranieri io parlerò a questo popolo, ma neppure così mi ascolteranno, dice il Signore?
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.	22 Il dono delle lingue è quindi un segno non per quelli che credono ma per gli increduli; la profezia invece non è per gli increduli ma per quelli che credono.
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?	23 Dunque se, mentre l’intera comunità si trova riunita in uno stesso luogo, tutti parlano in lingue ed entrano dei non iniziati o degli infedeli, non diranno essi che siete pazzi?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:	24 Al contrario, se tutti profetizzano ed entra un infedele o un non iniziato, costui si sentirà da tutti convinto, da tutti giudicato.
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.	25 I segreti del suo cuore diventeranno palesi e, gettandosi con la faccia a terra, egli adorerà Dio proclamando: «Davvero Iddio è in mezzo a voi».
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, everyone of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.	26 Che ne segue dunque, o fratelli? Quando vi radunate e ciascuno ha o un inno sacro da cantare o un insegnamento, o una rivelazione, o una preghiera in lingue, o un’interpretazione, tutto si faccia in vista dell’edificazione.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.	27 Se si parla in lingue, parlino due per volta o al massimo tre, e a turno, e uno ne dia l’interpretazione.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.	28 Che se non c'è interprete, ognuno resti in silenzio nell’assemblea e parli tra sé e con Dio.
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.	29 Quanto ai profeti poi, prendano la parola due o tre, e gli altri giudichino.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.	30 Se però un altro tra i presenti riceve una rivelazione, il primo taccia.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.	31 A uno a uno potete tutti profetizzare, affinché tutti ne siano istruiti e tutti esortati.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.	32 Anche gli spiriti dei profeti sono sottomessi di profeti,
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.	33 poiché Iddio non è Dio del disordine, ma della pace. Come in tutte e Chiese dei santi,
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.	34 nelle assemblee le donne tacciano; a esse infatti non è permesso prendervi la parola e, come dice anche la legge, siano sottomesse.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.	35 Che se vogliono istruirsi su qualche punto, interroghino a casa i propri mariti; poiché è sconveniente per una donna parlare in un’assemblea.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?	36 È forse partita da voi la parola di Dio? O forse, è giunta a voi soli?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.	37 Se uno crede di essere profeta o in possesso di doni spirituali, riconosca che quanto vi scrivo è un precetto del Signore;
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.	38 che se qualcuno finge di ignorarlo, è lui a essere disconosciuto da Dio.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.	39 Dunque, o fratelli miei, aspirate al dono della profezia e non vogliate impedire che si parli in lingue;
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.	40 tutto però si faccia convenientemente e con ordine.
