1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.	1 Prima della festa di Pasqua sapendo Gesù che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;	2 E fatta la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda di Simone Iscariote di tradirlo,
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;	3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani, e come, venuto da Dio, a Dio tornava,
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.	4 si alzò da tavola, depose la veste, e preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.	5 Poi versata dell'acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli, e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui era cinto.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?	6 Venne dunque a Simon Pietro. E Pietro gli disse: Signore, tu lavarmi i piedi?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.	7 Gli rispose Gesù: Quel che fo' tu ora non lo comprendi; ma lo saprai in avvenire.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.	8 E Pietro: Tu non mi laverai i piedi in eterno! Gesù gli rispose: Se non ti laverò non avrai parte con me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.	9 Allora, Signore, esclamò Simon Pietro, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.	10 E Gesù replicò: Chi è lavato non ha bisogno che di lavarsi i piedi, per essere tutto puro. E voi siete puri, ma non tutti.
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.	11 Sapeva bene chi l'avrebbe tradito; per questo disse: Non siete tutti puri.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?	12 Dopo aver dunque lavati loro i piedi, riprese le sue vesti, e rimessosi a mensa, disse loro: Intendete quello che vi ho fatto?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.	13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore, e dite bene, perchè lo sono.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.	14 Se dunque v'ho lavati i piedi io, Maestro e Signore, dovete anche voi lavarvi i piedi l'un l'altro.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.	15 Io infatti vi ho dato l'esempio, affinchè come ho fatto io, facciate anche voi.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.	16 In verità, in verità vi dico: Non c'è servo maggiore del suo padrone; nè apostolo da più di chi lo ha mandato.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.	17 Sapendo queste cose sarete beati se le metterete in pratica.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.	18 Non parlo di voi tutti, so quali ho eletti; ma si deve adempire la Scrittura; uno che mangia il pane con me leverà contrò di me il suo calcagno.
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.	19 Ve lo dico ora prima che avvenga, affinché, avvenuto che sia, crediate che son io.
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi accoglie colui elio avrò mandato, accoglie me, o chi accoglie me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato.
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.	21 Dette queste cose, Gesù si turbò nello spirito, e parlando apertamente, disse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che uno di voi mi tradirà.
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.	22 Cominciarono perciò i discepoli a guardarsi l'un l'altro, non sapendo a chi alludesse.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.	23 Stava uno dei discepoli, quello da Gesù prediletto, posando sul seno di lui.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.	24 A questo fe' cenno Simon Pietro, e chiese: Di chi parla?
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?	25 E quello, posato com'era sul petto di Gesù, chiese a lui: Signore, chi è mai?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.	26 Gesù gli rispose: E' quello a cui darò un pezzetto di pane intinto. E intinto un pezzetto di pane lo diede a Giuda di Simone Iscariote.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.	27 E dopo quel boccone Satana entrò in lui. E Gesù gli disse: Quello che fai fallo presto.
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.	28 Ma nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè egli avesse così parlato.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.	29 Difatti alcuni pensavano, che tenendo Giuda la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: Compra quanto ci occorre per la festa, o che desse qualche cosa ai poveri.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.	30 Ma Giuda, preso il boccone, partì subito. Ed era notte.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.	31 Uscito che fu Giuda, Gesù disse: Ora è stato glorificato il Figlio dell'uomo: e Dio è stato glorificato in lui:
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.	32 e se Dio è stato in lui glorificato, lo glorificherà in se stesso e presto.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.	33 Figliolini, son con voi ancora per poco. Mi cercherete, ma, come dissi ai Giudei: dove sono io non potete venire voi, or lo dico anche a voi.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.	34 Vi dò un comandamento nuovo, d'amarvi scambievolmente: amatevi l'un l'altro come io vi ho amati.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.	35 Da questo conosceran tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avrete mutuo amore.
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.	36 Gli disse altera Simon Pietro: Signore, dove vai? Gesù gli rispose: Dove vo io non puoi seguirmi per ora, ma più tardi mi seguirai.
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.	37 Replicò Pietro: E perchè non posso ora, Signore, seguirti? Darò per te la vita.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.	38 Gesù gli disse: Tu darai la vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: non canterà il gallo, che tu mi avrai rinnegato per tre volte.
