1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.	1 Prima della festa di Pasqua, sapendo Gesù che era venuta la sua ora per passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò fino alla fine.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;	2 Durante la cena, quando il diavolo aveva già posto in animo a Giuda di Simone Iscariota di tradirlo,
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;	3 sapendo che il Padre aveva messo tutto nelle sue mani e che da Dio era uscito e a Dio ritornava,
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.	4 si alzò da tavola, depose il mantello e, preso un panno, se ne cinse.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.	5 Versò quindi dell'acqua nel catino e incominciò a lavare i piedi dei discepoli e ad asciugarli con il panno del quale si era cinto.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?	6 Arriva dunque a Simone Pietro. Gli disse: "Signore, tu mi lavi i piedi?".
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.	7 Gli rispose Gesù: "Ciò che io ti faccio, tu ora non lo sai; lo comprenderai in seguito".
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.	8 Gli disse Pietro: "Non mi laverai i piedi. No, mai!". Gli rispose Gesù: "Se io non ti lavo, non avrai parte con me".
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.	9 Gli disse Simone Pietro: "Signore, non solo i miei piedi, ma anche le mani ed il capo".
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.	10 Gesù soggiunse: "Chi ha fatto il bagno, non ha bisogno di lavarsi se non i piedi, ed è integralmente puro; e voi siete puri, ma non tutti".
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.	11 Sapeva infatti chi stava per tradirlo; per questo disse: "Non tutti siete puri".
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?	12 Or quando ebbe lavato loro i piedi, riprese il suo mantello, si rimise a sedere e disse loro: "Capite che cosa vi ho fatto?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.	13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore e dite bene, perché lo sono.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.	14 Se dunque io, il Signore e il Maestro, vi ho lavato i piedi, anche voi dovete lavarvi i piedi gli uni gli altri.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.	15 Infatti vi ho dato un esempio, affinché anche voi facciate come io ho fatto a voi.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.	16 In verità, in verità vi dico: il servo non è più grande del suo padrone né l'apostolo è più grande di colui che l'ha mandato.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.	17 Se capite queste cose, siete beati se le mettete in pratica.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.	18 Non parlo per tutti voi: io conosco chi ho scelto; ma deve compiersi la Scrittura: Colui che mangia il mio pane, ha levato contro di me il suo calcagno.
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.	19 Fin d'ora ve lo dico prima che accada, affinché, quando accadrà, crediate che io sono.
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi accoglie colui che avrò mandato, accoglie me, e chi accoglie me, accoglie Colui che mi ha mandato".
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.	21 Detto questo, Gesù fu turbato interiormente e attestò: "In verità, in verità vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà".
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.	22 I discepoli si guardavano gli uni gli altri, non riuscendo a capire di chi egli parlava.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.	23 Uno dei suoi discepoli, quello che Gesù amava, stava adagiato proprio accanto a Gesù.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.	24 Allora Simon Pietro gli fa cenno di chiedergli chi fosse quello di cui parlava.
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?	25 Egli, chinatosi sul petto di Gesù, gli dice: "Signore, chi è?".
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.	26 Gesù risponde: "E' quello a cui porgerò il boccone che sto per intingere". Intinto dunque il boccone, lo prese e lo porse a Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.	27 Allora, dopo il boccone, entrò in lui Satana. Gli dice Gesù: "Quello che devi fare, fallo subito".
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.	28 Ma nessuno dei commensali comprese perché gli avesse detto questo.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.	29 Siccome Giuda teneva la borsa, alcuni supponevano che Gesù gli avesse detto: "Compera quanto ci occorre per la festa", oppure che gli avesse ordinato di dare qualcosa ai poveri.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.	30 Così, preso il boccone, quello uscì subito. Era notte.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.	31 Quando fu uscito, Gesù dice: "Ora il Figlio dell'uomo è stato glorificato e Dio è stato glorificato in lui.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.	32 Se Dio è stato glorificato in lui, anche Dio per parte sua lo glorificherà e subito lo glorificherà.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.	33 Figlioletti, ancora un poco sarò con voi. Mi cercherete, e come ho detto ai Giudei: "Dove io vado voi non potete venire", così lo dico ora anche a voi.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.	34 Un comandamento nuovo vi do: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri; come io ho amato voi, anche voi amatevi gli uni gli altri.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.	35 Da questo riconosceranno tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avete amore gli uni per gli altri".
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.	36 Gli disse Simon Pietro: "Signore, dove vai?". Gli rispose Gesù: "Dove io vado, tu non mi puoi seguire ora; mi seguirai più tardi".
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.	37 Gli disse Pietro: "Signore, perché non posso seguirti fin d'ora? Darei la mia vita per te".
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.	38 Rispose Gesù: "Darai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: il gallo non canterà prima che tu mi abbia rinnegato tre volte".
