1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.	1 - Prima della festa di Pasqua, Gesù, sapendo giunta l'ora sua di passare da questo mondo al Padre, poichè egli aveva amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;	2 Terminata la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda, figliuol di Simone Iscariote, di tradirlo,
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;	3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio ritornava,
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.	4 si levò da tavola, depose la veste e, preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.	5 Poi, versata acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli ed a rasciugarli col panno che si era messo intorno.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?	6 Venne dunque da Simon Pietro; ma Pietro gli disse: «Tu, Signore, lavi i piedi a me?».
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.	7 Gesù rispose: «Ciò che io faccio, non lo comprendi ora; lo comprenderai più tardi».
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.	8 Pietro gli disse: «I piedi tu non me li laverai in eterno!». E Gesù: «Se io non ti lavo, tu non avrai parte con me».
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.	9 Rispose Simon Pietro: «Signore, non solo i miei piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo».
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.	10 Gesù soggiunse: «Chi è lavato, ha bisogno di lavarsi soltanto i piedi; egli è già mondo. Anche voi siete mondi, ma non tutti».
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.	11 Perchè egli sapeva chi sarebbe stato a tradirlo, perciò disse: «Non siete tutti mondi».
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?	12 Dopo lavati loro i piedi e riprese le sue vesti, si rimise a tavola e disse loro: «Sapete cosa vi ho fatto?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.	13 Voi chiamate me Maestro e Signore, e fate bene, perchè lo sono.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.	14 Se dunque io, Signore e Maestro, ho lavato i piedi a voi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni gli altri.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.	15 Vi ho dato l'esempio affinchè anche voi facciate come io ho fatto a voi.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.	16 In verità, in verità vi dico che il servo non è da più del padrone, nè l'apostolo da più di colui che l'ha mandato.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.	17 Se voi sapete queste cose, sarete beati se le metterete in pratica!
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.	18 Io non parlo di ciascuno di voi; io conosco quelli che ho scelto: ma bisogna che si compia la Scrittura: "Chi mangia il pane con me, ha levato il suo calcagno contro di me".
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.	19 Ve lo dico adesso prima che avvenga, affinchè avvenuto che sia, crediate che sono io.
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi riceve colui che io manderò, riceve me stesso, e chi riceve me, riceve Colui che mi ha mandato».
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.	21 Detto ciò, Gesù fu turbato nello spirito, protestò e disse: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Uno di voi mi tradirà».
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.	22 I discepoli si guardavano tra loro, incerti di chi parlasse.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.	23 Uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesù prediligeva, se ne stava appoggiato al petto di Gesù,
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.	24 e Simon Pietro gli fece cenno e gli disse: «Di chi parla?».
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?	25 Posato come era pertanto sul seno di Gesù, gli domandò: «Signore, chi è mai?».
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.	26 Gli rispose Gesù: «È colui al quale io porgerò del pane inzuppato». E inzuppato del pane lo diede a Giuda, figliuolo di Simone Iscariote.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.	27 E dopo quel boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Gli disse pertanto Gesù: «Ciò che fai, fallo presto».
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.	28 Nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè glielo avesse detto;
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.	29 alcuni infatti pensavano che, siccome Giuda aveva la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: «Compera quanto ci è necessario per la festa», oppure: che desse qualcosa ai poveri.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.	30 Quello però, preso il boccone, uscì subito. Era notte.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.	31 Uscito che fu, Gesù disse: «Ora il Figliuol dell'uomo è stato glorificato, e Dio è stato glorificato in lui.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.	32 Se Dio fu glorificato in lui, anche Dio lo glorificherà in se stesso e lo glorificherà tosto.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.	33 Figliuoli, ancora per poco sono con voi. Voi mi cercherete, ma, come ho detto ai Giudei, dove io vado, voi non potete venire; lo dico adesso anche a voi.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.	34 Io vi dò il comandamento nuovo: Amatevi gli uni con gli altri. Come io ho amato voi, così voi amatevi a vicenda.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.	35 Da questo tutti conosceranno che siete miei discepoli, se vi amerete scambievolmente».
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.	36 Simon Pietro gli domandò: «Signore, dove vai?». Gesù gli rispose: «Dove io vado, non puoi per ora seguirmi; mi seguirai più tardi».
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.	37 Pietro gli disse: «Signore, perchè non posso seguirti ora? Io darò la mia vita per te!».
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.	38 Gesù gli replicò: «Tu dai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: - Non canterà il gallo prima che tu non m'abbia rinnegato tre volte. -
