KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.1 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;2 The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,
Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me."
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.9 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well."
Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.10 Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.11 For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?12 So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.13 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.14 If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.16 Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.17 If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.18 I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.'
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.19 From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.21 When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.22 The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side.
Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?25 He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, "Master, who is it?"
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it." So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.27 After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.28 (Now) none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or to give something to the poor.
He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.30 So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.
Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.31 When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.32 (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, 'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.36 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered (him), "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later."
Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.37 Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."
