1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,	1 Puisque beaucoup ont entrepris de composer un récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous,
2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;	2 d'après ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui furent dès le début témoins oculaires et serviteurs de laParole,
3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,	3 j'ai décidé, moi aussi, après m'être informé exactement de tout depuis les origines d'en écrire pour toil'exposé suivi, excellent Théophile,
4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.	4 pour que tu te rendes bien compte de la sûreté des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.	5 Il y eut aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un prêtre du nom de Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia, et il avaitpour femme une descendante d'Aaron, dont le nom était Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.	6 Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, et ils suivaient, irréprochables, tous les commandements etobservances du Seigneur.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.	7 Mais ils n'avaient pas d'enfant, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile et que tous deux étaient avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,	8 Or il advint, comme il remplissait devant Dieu les fonctions sacerdotales au tour de sa classe,
9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.	9 qu'il fut, suivant la coutume sacerdotale, désigné par le sort pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur ety brûler l'encens.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.	10 Et toute la multitude du peuple était en prière, dehors, à l'heure de l'encens.
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.	11 Alors lui apparut l'Ange du Seigneur, debout à droite de l'autel de l'encens.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.	12 A cette vue, Zacharie fut troublé et la crainte fondit sur lui.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.	13 Mais l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Zacharie, car ta supplication a été exaucée; ta femme Elisabetht'enfantera un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jean.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.	14 Tu auras joie et allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.	15 Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin ni boisson forte; il sera rempli d'Esprit Saint dèsle sein de sa mère
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.	16 et il ramènera de nombreux fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.	17 Il marchera devant lui avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener le coeur des pères vers lesenfants et les rebelles à la prudence des justes, préparant au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé."
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.	18 Zacharie dit à l'ange: "A quoi connaîtrai-je cela? Car moi je suis un vieillard et ma femme est avancéeen âge."
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.	19 Et l'ange lui répondit: "Moi je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu, et j'ai été envoyé pour te parleret t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.	20 Et voici que tu vas être réduit au silence et sans pouvoir parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront,parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, lesquelles s'accompliront en leur temps."
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.	21 Le peuple cependant attendait Zacharie et s'étonnait qu'il s'attardât dans le sanctuaire.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.	22 Mais quand il sortit, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans lesanctuaire. Pour lui, il leur faisait des signes et demeurait muet.
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.	23 Et il advint, quand ses jours de service furent accomplis, qu'il s'en retourna chez lui.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,	24 Quelque temps après, sa femme Elisabeth conçut, et elle se tenait cachée cinq mois durant.
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.	25 "Voilà donc, disait-elle, ce qu'a fait pour moi le Seigneur, au temps où il lui a plu d'enlever monopprobre parmi les hommes!"
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,	26 Le sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, du nom de Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.	27 à une vierge fiancée à un homme du nom de Joseph, de la maison de David; et le nom de la vierge étaitMarie.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.	28 Il entra et lui dit: "Réjouis-toi, comblée de grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi."
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.	29 A cette parole elle fut toute troublée, et elle se demandait ce que signifiait cette salutation.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.	30 Et l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.	31 Voici que tu concevras dans ton sein et enfanteras un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:	32 Il sera grand, et sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut. Le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, sonpère;
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.	33 il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour les siècles et son règne n'aura pas de fin."
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?	34 Mais Marie dit à l'ange: "Comment cela sera-t-il, puisque je ne connais pas d'homme?"
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.	35 L'ange lui répondit: "L'Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous sonombre; c'est pourquoi l'être saint qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.	36 Et voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, vient, elle aussi, de concevoir un fils dans sa vieillesse, et elle en est àson sixième mois, elle qu'on appelait la stérile;
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.	37 car rien n'est impossible à Dieu."
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.	38 Marie dit alors: "Je suis la servante du Seigneur; qu'il m'advienne selon ta parole!" Et l'ange la quitta.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;	39 En ces jours-là, Marie partit et se rendit en hâte vers la région montagneuse, dans une ville de Juda.
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.	40 Elle entra chez Zacharie et salua Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:	41 Et il advint, dès qu'Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, que l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein etElisabeth fut remplie d'Esprit Saint.
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.	42 Alors elle poussa un grand cri et dit: "Bénie es-tu entre les femmes, et béni le fruit de ton sein!
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?	43 Et comment m'est-il donné que vienne à moi la mère de mon Seigneur?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.	44 Car, vois-tu, dès l'instant où ta salutation a frappé mes oreilles, l'enfant a tressailli d'allégresse en monsein.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.	45 Oui, bienheureuse celle qui a cru en l'accomplissement de ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur!"
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,	46 Marie dit alors: "Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.	47 et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu mon sauveur,
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.	48 parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur l'abaissement de sa servante. Oui, désormais toutes les générations mediront bienheureuse,
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.	49 car le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Saint est son nom,
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.	50 et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.	51 Il a déployé la force de son bras, il a dispersé les hommes au coeur superbe.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.	52 Il a renversé les potentats de leurs trônes et élevé les humbles,
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.	53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés et renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;	54 Il est venu en aide à Israël, son serviteur, se souvenant de sa miséricorde, --
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.	55 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé à nos pères - en faveur d'Abraham et de sa postérité à jamais!"
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.	56 Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle s'en retourna chez elle.
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.	57 Quant à Elisabeth, le temps fut accompli où elle devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.	58 Ses voisins et ses proches apprirent que le Seigneur avait fait éclater sa miséricorde à son égard, et ilss'en réjouissaient avec elle.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.	59 Et il advint, le huitième jour, qu'ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant. On voulait l'appeler Zacharie, dunom de son père;
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.	60 mais, prenant la parole, sa mère dit: "Non, il s'appellera Jean."
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.	61 Et on lui dit: "Il n'y a personne de ta parenté qui porte ce nom!"
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.	62 Et l'on demandait par signes au père comment il voulait qu'on l'appelât.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.	63 Celui-ci demanda une tablette et écrivit: "Jean est son nom"; et ils en furent tous étonnés.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.	64 A l'instant même, sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue se délia, et il parlait et bénissait Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.	65 La crainte s'empara de tous leurs voisins, et dans la montagne de Judée tout entière on racontait toutesces choses.
66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.	66 Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les mirent dans leur coeur, en disant: "Que sera donc cet enfant?"Et, de fait, la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,	67 Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli d'Esprit Saint et se mit à prophétiser:
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,	68 "Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et délivré son peuple,
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;	69 et nous a suscité une puissance de salut dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:	70 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes des temps anciens,
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;	71 pour nous sauver de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;	72 Ainsi fait-il miséricorde à nos pères, ainsi se souvient-il de son alliance sainte,
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,	73 du serment qu'il a juré à Abraham, notre père, de nous accorder
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,	74 que, sans crainte, délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servions
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.	75 en sainteté et justice devant lui, tout au long de nos jours.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;	76 Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant le Seigneur, pourlui préparer les voies,
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,	77 pour donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de ses péchés;
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,	78 grâce aux sentiments de miséricorde de notre Dieu, dans lesquels nous a visités l'Astre d'en haut,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.	79 pour illuminer ceux qui demeurent dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, afin de guider nos pas dansle chemin de la paix."
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.	80 Cependant l'enfant grandissait, et son esprit se fortifiait. Et il demeurait dans les déserts jusqu'au jourde sa manifestation à Israël.
