Jeremiah 2

1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,	1 La parole du Seigneur me fut adressée en ces termes:
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.	2 Va, et crie aux oreilles de Jérusalem; dis-lui : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Je Me suis souvenu de toi, ayant compassion de ta jeunesse; Je Me suis souvenu de ton amour pour Moi, lorsque tu M'étais fiancée, quand tu Me suivis au désert, dans une terre où l'on ne sème pas.
3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.	3 Israël a été consacré au Seigneur, il est les prémices de ses fruits : tous ceux qui le dévorent sont coupables; les maux viendront sur eux, dit le Seigneur.
4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:	4 Ecoutez la parole du Seigneur, maison de Jacob, et toutes les familles de la maison d'Israël.
5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?	5 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Quelle iniquité vos pères ont-ils trouvée en Moi pour s'éloigner de Moi, et pour aller après la vanité, et devenir vains eux-mêmes?
6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?	6 Et ils n'ont pas dit : Où est le Seigneur qui nous a fait monter de la terre d'Egypte, qui nous a conduits par le désert, à travers une terre inhabitée et inaccessible, une terre où l'on a soif, image de la mort, une terre par où aucun homme n'a passé, et où aucun homme n'a habité?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.	7 Je vous ai fait entrer dans une terre fertile, pour que vous en mangiez les fruits et les meilleurs produits; et après y être entrés, vous avez souillé Ma terre, et vous avez fait de Mon héritage une abomination.
8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.	8 Les prêtres n'ont pas dit : Où est le Seigneur? Les dépositaires de la loi ne M'ont pas connu; les pasteurs ont prévariqué envers Moi; les prophètes ont prophétisé au nom de Baal, et ils ont suivi les idoles.
9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.	9 C'est pourquoi J'entrerai encore en jugement avec vous, dit le Seigneur, et Je contesterai avec vos enfants.
10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.	10 Passez aux îles de Céthim, et regardez; envoyez à Cédar, et considérez avec soin, et voyez s'il s'y est fait quelque chose de semblable:
11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.	11 s'il est une nation qui ait changé ses dieux, quoiqu'ils ne soient point des dieux; et cependant Mon peuple a changé sa gloire contre une idole.
12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.	12 Cieux, soyez étonnés de cela; portes du ciel, soyez inconsolables, dit le Seigneur.
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.	13 Car Mon peuple a fait deux maux : ils M'ont abandonné, Moi qui suis une source d'eau vive, et ils se sont creusé des citernes, des citernes crevassées, qui ne peuvent retenir l'eau.
14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?	14 Israël est-il un esclave, ou un enfant d'esclave? Pourquoi donc est-il devenu une proie?
15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.	15 Les lions ont rugi contre lui, ils ont poussé leurs cris; on a réduit son pays en désert, ses villes ont été brûlées, et il n'y a personne qui y demeure.
16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.	16 Les enfants mêmes de Memphis et de Taphnès t'ont souillée des pieds jusqu'à la tête.
17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?	17 Et cela ne t'est-il pas arrivé parce que tu as abandonné le Seigneur ton Dieu, lorsqu'Il te conduisait par le chemin?
18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?	18 Et maintenant qu'as-tu à faire sur le chemin de l'Egypte, pour boire de l'eau bourbeuse? et qu'as-tu à faire sur le chemin des Assyriens, pour boire l'eau du fleuve?
19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.	19 Ta malice t'accusera, et ton apostasie te châtiera. Sache et vois que c'est une chose mauvaise et amère d'avoir abandonné le Seigneur ton Dieu, et de n'avoir plus Ma crainte devant les yeux, dit le Seigneur, le Dieu des armées.
20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.	20 Dès le commencement tu as brisé Mon joug, tu as rompu Mes liens, et tu as dit : Je ne servirai pas. Car sur toute colline élevée et sous tout arbre touffu tu t'es prostituée comme une femme impudique.
21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?	21 Et Moi Je t'avais plantée comme une vigne de choix, tout à fait de bon plant; comment donc es-tu devenue pour Moi un plant bâtard, ô vigne étrangère?
22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.	22 Quand tu te laverais avec du nitre, et que tu emploierais avec profusion l'herbe de borith, tu demeurerais souillée devant Moi dans ton iniquité, dit le Seigneur Dieu.
23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;	23 Comment dis-tu : Je ne suis pas souillée, je ne suis point allée après les Baal? Vois les traces de tes pas dans la vallée, reconnais ce que tu as fait. Juda est un coursier léger qui dévore la route.
24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.	24 C'est une ânesse sauvage accoutumée au désert, qui, dans le désir ardent de sa passion, aspire l'air : rien ne l'arrêtera. Tous ceux qui la cherchent n'auront pas à se fatiguer; ils la trouveront dans son mois.
25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.	25 Epargne à ton pied la nudité, et la soif à ta gorge. Mais tu as dit : J'ai perdu l'espérance, je n'en ferai rien; car J'aime les étrangers, et je veux aller après eux.
26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,	26 Comme un voleur est confus lorsqu'il est surpris, ainsi la maison d'Israël, ses rois, ses princes, ses prêtres et ses prophètes ont été confus,
27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.	27 eux qui disent au bois : Tu es mon père; et à la pierre : Tu m'as donné la vie. Ils M'ont tourné le dos et non le visage, et au temps de leur affliction ils diront : Levez-vous et délivrez-nous.
28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.	28 Où sont tes dieux que tu t'es faits? Qu'ils se lèvent et qu'ils te délivrent au temps de ton affliction; car tes dieux étaient aussi nombreux que tes villes, ô Juda!
29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.	29 Pourquoi voulez-vous entrer en jugement avec Moi? Vous M'avez tous abandonné, dit le Seigneur.
30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.	30 C'est en vain que J'ai frappé vos enfants, ils n'ont point reçu la correction; votre glaive a dévoré vos prophètes : votre race est comme un lion destructeur.
31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?	31 Considérez la parole du Seigneur : Suis-Je devenu pour Israël un désert ou une terre de ténèbres? Pourquoi donc Mon peuple a-t-il dit : Nous nous retirons, nous ne viendrons plus à Vous?
32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.	32 Une jeune fille oublie-t-elle sa parure, ou une épouse l'écharpe qui orne son sein? Et cependant Mon peuple M'a oublié durant des jours sans nombre.
33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.	33 Pourquoi essayes-tu de justifier ta conduite pour rentrer en grâces avec Moi, toi qui a enseigné le mal à tes propres voies,
34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.	34 et puisqu'on a trouvé sur le bord de ta robe le sang des âmes pauvres et innocentes? Je les ai trouvées, non dans les fosses, mais dans tous les lieux dont J'ai parlé plus haut.
35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.	35 Et tu as dit : Je suis sans péché, je suis innocente; que Votre fureur s'éloigne donc de moi. Voici que je vais entrer en jugement avec toi, puisque tu dis : Je n'ai point péché.
36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.	36 Que tu es devenue méprisable en reprenant tes voies! Tu seras confondue par l'Egypte, comme tu l'as été par l'Assyrie.
37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.	37 Car de là aussi tu sortiras, tenant tes mains sur ta tête, car le Seigneur brisera l'objet de ta confiance, et tu n'en retireras aucun avantage.
