KING JAMES BIBLEJERUSALEM
Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.1 Poème. D'Asaph. Ecoute, ô mon peuple, ma loi; tends l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche;
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:2 j'ouvre la bouche en paraboles, j'évoque du passé les mystères.
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.3 Nous l'avons entendu et connu, nos pères nous l'ont raconté;
We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.4 nous ne le tairons pas à leurs enfants, nous le raconterons à la génération qui vient: les titres deYahvé et sa puissance, ses merveilles telles qu'il les fit;
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:5 il établit un témoignage en Jacob, il mit une loi en Israël; il avait commandé à nos pères de le faireconnaître à leurs enfants,
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:6 que la génération qui vient le connaisse, les enfants qui viendront à naître. Qu'ils se lèvent, qu'ilsracontent à leurs enfants,
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:7 qu'ils mettent en Dieu leur espoir, qu'ils n'oublient pas les hauts faits de Dieu, et sescommandements, qu'ils les observent;
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.8 qu'ils ne soient pas, à l'exemple de leurs pères, une génération de révolte et de bravade, générationqui n'a point le coeur sûr et dont l'esprit n'est point fidèle à Dieu.
The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.9 Les fils d'Ephraïm, tireurs d'arc, se retournèrent, le jour du combat;
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;10 ils ne gardaient pas l'alliance de Dieu, ils refusaient de marcher dans sa loi;
And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.11 ils avaient oublié ses hauts faits, ses merveilles qu'il leur donna de voir:
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.12 devant leurs pères il fit merveille en terre d'Egypte, aux champs de Tanis.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.13 Il fendit la mer et les transporta, il dressa les eaux comme une digue;
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.14 il les guida de jour par la nuée, par la lueur d'un feu toute la nuit;
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.15 il fendit les rochers au désert, il les abreuva à la mesure du grand abîme;
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.16 du roc il fit sortir des ruisseaux et descendre les eaux en torrents.
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.17 Mais de plus belle ils péchaient contre lui et bravaient le Très-Haut dans le lieu sec;
And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.18 ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur coeur, demandant à manger à leur faim.
Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?19 Or ils parlèrent contre Dieu; ils dirent: "Est-il capable, Dieu, de dresser une table au désert?
Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?20 "Voici qu'il frappe le rocher, les eaux coulent, les torrents s'échappent: mais du pain, est-il capabled'en donner, ou de fournir de la viande à son peuple?"
Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;21 Alors Yahvé entendit, il s'emporta; un feu flamba contre Jacob, et puis la Colère monta contreIsraël,
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:22 car ils étaient sans foi en Dieu, ils étaient sans confiance en son salut.
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,23 Aux nuées d'en haut il commanda, il ouvrit les battants des cieux;
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.24 pour les nourrir il fit pleuvoir la manne, il leur donna le froment des cieux;
Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.25 du pain des Forts l'homme se nourrit, il leur envoya des vivres à satiété.
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.26 Il fit lever dans les cieux le vent d'est, il fit venir par sa puissance le vent du sud,
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:27 il fit pleuvoir sur eux la viande comme poussière, la volaille comme sable des mers,
And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.28 il en fit tomber au milieu de son camp, tout autour de sa demeure.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;29 Ils mangèrent et furent bien rassasiés, il leur servit ce qu'ils désiraient;
They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,30 eux n'étaient pas revenus de leur désir, leur manger encore en la bouche,
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.31 que la colère de Dieu monta contre eux: il massacrait parmi les robustes, abattait les cadetsd'Israël.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.32 Malgré tout, ils péchèrent encore, ils n'eurent pas foi en ses merveilles.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.33 Il consuma en un souffle leurs jours, leurs années en une panique.
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.34 Quand il les massacrait, ils le cherchaient, ils revenaient, s'empressaient près de lui.
And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.35 Ils se souvenaient: Dieu leur rocher, Dieu le Très-Haut, leur rédempteur!
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.36 Mais ils le flattaient de leur bouche, mais de leur langue ils lui mentaient,
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.37 leur coeur n'était pas sûr envers lui, ils étaient sans foi en son alliance.
But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.38 Lui alors, dans sa tendresse, effaçait les torts au lieu de dévaster; sans se lasser, il revenait de sacolère au lieu de réveiller tout son courroux.
For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.39 Il se souvenait: eux, cette chair, souffle qui s'en va et ne revient pas.
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!40 Que de fois ils le bravèrent au désert, l'offensèrent parmi les solitudes!
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.41 Ils revenaient tenter Dieu, affliger le Saint d'Israël,
They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.42 sans nul souvenir de sa main, ni du jour qu'il les sauva de l'adversaire.
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:43 Lui qui en Egypte mit ses signes, ses miracles aux champs de Tanis,
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.44 fit tourner en sang leurs fleuves, leurs ruisseaux pour les priver de boire.
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.45 Il leur envoya des taons qui dévoraient, des grenouilles qui les infestaient;
He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.46 il livra au criquet leurs récoltes et leur labeur à la sauterelle;
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.47 il massacra par la grêle leur vigne et leurs sycomores par la gelée;
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.48 il remit à la grêle leur bétail et leurs troupeaux aux éclairs.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.49 Il lâcha sur eux le feu de sa colère, emportement et fureur et détresse, un envoi d'anges demalheur;
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;50 il fraya un sentier à sa colère. Il n'exempta pas leur âme de la mort, à la peste il remit leur vie;
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:51 il frappa tout premier-né en Egypte, la fleur de la race aux tentes de Cham.
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.52 Il poussa comme des brebis son peuple, les mena comme un troupeau dans le désert;
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.53 il les guida sûrement, ils furent sans crainte, leurs ennemis, la mer les recouvrit.
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.54 Il les amena vers son saint territoire, la montagne que sa droite a conquise;
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.55 il chassa devant eux les païens, il leur marqua au cordeau un héritage; il installa sous leurs tentesles tribus d'Israël.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:56 Ils tentaient, ils bravaient Dieu le Très-Haut, se refusaient à garder ses témoignages;
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.57 ils déviaient, ils trahissaient comme leurs pères, se retournaient comme un arc infidèle;
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.58 ils l'indignaient avec leurs hauts lieux, par leurs idoles ils le rendaient jaloux.
When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:59 Dieu entendit et s'emporta, il rejeta tout à fait Israël;
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;60 il délaissa la demeure de Silo, la tente où il demeurait chez les hommes.
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.61 Il livra sa force à la captivité, aux mains de l'ennemi sa splendeur;
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.62 il remit son peuple à l'épée, contre son héritage il s'emporta.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.63 Ses cadets, le feu les dévora, ses vierges n'eurent pas de chant de noces;
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.64 ses prêtres tombèrent sous l'épée, ses veuves ne firent pas de lamentations.
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.65 Il s'éveilla comme un dormeur, le Seigneur, comme un vaillant terrassé par le vin,
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.66 il frappa ses ennemis au dos, les livra pour toujours à la honte.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:67 Il rejeta la tente de Joseph, il n'élut pas la tribu d'Ephraïm;
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.68 il élut la tribu de Juda, la montagne de Sion qu'il aime.
And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.69 Il bâtit comme les hauteurs son sanctuaire, comme la terre qu'il fonda pour toujours.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:70 Il élut David son serviteur, il le tira des parcs à moutons,
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.71 de derrière les brebis mères il l'appela pour paître Jacob son peuple et Israël son héritage;
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.72 il les paissait d'un coeur parfait, et d'une main sage les guidait.
