1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Ma poco dopo Lisia, procuratore e parente del re e messo a capo degli affari del regno, non potendo sopportare le cose accadute,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 messi insieme ottanta mila uomini e tutta la cavalleria, si mosse contro i Giudei, contando di prender la città e darla ad abitare ai Gentili,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 di rendere cespite di guadagno il tempio, come tutti gli altri templi dei Gentili, e di mettere in vendita tutti gli anni il sacerdozio.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 Per nulla pensando alla potenza di Dio, senz'alcun freno di ragione, metteva la sua fiducia nella moltitudine dei fanti, nelle migliaia dei cavalieri, e in ottanta elefanti.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Or, entrato in Giudea e avvicinatosi a Betsura, che era in luoghi stretti, lontana cinque stadi da Gerusalemme, espugnò quella fortezza.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Appena Maccabeo e quelli che eran con lui seppero l'espugnazione delle fortezze, con sospiri e lacrime, insieme a tutto il popolo, pregarono il Signore a mandare l'angelo buono per la liberazione d'Israele.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 E lo stesso Maccabeo, dopo aver preso per il primo le armi, esortò tutti gli altri ad esporsi con lui al pericolo per dar soccorso ai loro fratelli.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Mentre tutti insieme con animo risoluto marciavano a Gerusalemme, apparve dinanzi a loro un cavaliere vestito di bianco, con armi d'oro e colla lancia in resta.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Allora tutti insieme benedissero il misericordioso Signore, e, fortificati nell'animo, divennero pronti ad assalire non solo gli uomini, ma anche le bestie più feroci, e a trapassare muraglie di ferro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Si avanzarono dunque risolutamente, avendo il Signore che li aiutava dal cielo ed aveva pietà di loro.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Si scagliarono impetuosamente come leoni sopra il nemico e trucidarono undici mila fanti e mille seicento cavalieri.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 Tutti gli altri fnron da loro messi in fuga, e molti scapparono feriti e ignudi, e lo stesso Lisia si mise in salvo con vergognosa fuga.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 E siccome non era un insensato, considerando i vuoti fatti nelle sue truppe, e conoscendo che i Giudei erano invincibili, perchè appoggiati al soccorso dell'onnipotente, mandò a trattare con essi;
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 e promise di accondiscendere in tutto ciò che fosse giusto; e di fare in modo che il re diventasse loro amico,
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Maccabeo si arrese alle preghiere di Lisia, badando in tutto a ciò che era utile, e tutto ciò che Maccabeo per iscritto chiese a Lisia in favore dei Giudei il re lo concesse. 16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 La lettera che Lisia scrisse ai Giudei conteneva queste cose: « Lisia al popolo dei Giudei, sa­lute.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Giovanni e Abesalom, vostri inviati, consegnando il (vostro) scritto, mi chiesero di adem­pire quanto eran venuti a signi­ficarmi.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Così tutto quello che ho potuto riferire al re l'ho riferito, e tutto ciò che permettevano le circostanze l'ha concesso.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Se dunque resterete fedeli agli affari (del regno) io anche nell'avvenire mi sforzerò di farvi del bene.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 In quanto alle altre cose, in particolare, ho dati ordini a voce a questi e a quelli da me inviati di parlarne a voce con voi.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 State sani. L'anno centoquarant'otto, il ventiquattro del mese di Dioscuro ».
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La lettera del re conteneva queste cose: « Il re Antioco al fratello Lisia. Salute.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Dopo che il padre nostro fu trasferito fra gli dei, noi, bramando che i nostri sudditi, senza agitazioni attendano con cura ai loro affari,
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 e avendo saputo che i Giudei non si piegarono al desiderio di mio padre, di passare ai riti dei Greci, e che vogliono ritenere le loro istituzioni, e che perciò da noi chiedono che sia loro concesso (di vivere secondo le) loro leggi, noi,
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 volendo che anche questa nazione sia tranquilla, abbiamo giudicato e stabilito che sia loro restituito il tempio, affinchè essi possano fare secondo la consuetudine dei loro maggiori.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 farai dunque bene a inviare ad essi e a dar la destra, affinchè, cono­sciuta la nostra volontà, stiano di buon animo, e provvedano al loro bene ».
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 La lettera del re ai Giudei era questa: « Il re Antioco al senato dei Giudei e a tutti gli altri Giudei. Salute.
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Se voi state bene, state come desideriamo: anche noi stiamo bene.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 E' venuto da noi Menelao a dire che voi volete discendere ai vostri che sono presso di noi.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 Or dunque a quelli che faranno il viaggio fino al trenta del mese di Xantico, diamo la destra (in segno) di sicurezza.
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 E sia permesso ai Giudei di usare i loro cibi e le loro leggi come prima, e nessuno di essi sia in alcun modo molestato per ciò che è avvenuto per ignoranza.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Abbiamo poi mandato anche Menelao, affinchè parli con voi.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 State sani. L'anno centoquarant'otto, il quindici del mese di Xantico ».
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Anche i Romani scrissero una lettera che diceva così: « Quinto Memmio e Tito Manilio, legati dei Romani, al popolo dei Giudei. Salute.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Le cose a voi concedute da Lisia, parente del re, noi pure le concediamo.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Quanto poi a quelle che egli ha creduto di dover riferire al re, spedite subito qualcuno, dopo avere ben discussa tra voi la cosa, affinchè noi vediamo bene ciò che a voi convenga, perchè noi andiamo ad Antiochia.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Affrettatevi, dunque a rispondere per far sapere anche a noi quello che volete.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 State sani. L'anno centoquarant'otto, il quindici del mese di Xantico ».
