1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Poco tempo dopo, Lisia, tutore del re, suo parente e capo degli affari, mal sopportando quanto era accaduto,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 radunò circa ottantamila soldati con tutta la sua cavalleria e mosse contro i Giudei, contando di fare della città una residenza per i Greci,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 di sottoporre il tempio al tributo al pari degli altri santuari dei gentili e di mettere in vendita ogni anno il sommo sacerdozio,
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 non tenendo in alcun conto la potenza di Dio, ma confidando soltanto nelle sue miriadi di fanti, nelle sue migliaia di cavalieri e nei suoi ottanta elefanti.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Penetrato in Giudea, si avvicinò poi a Bet-Zur, che era una località fortificata, distante circa venti miglia da Gerusalemme, e la cinse d'assedio.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Quando gli uomini del Maccabeo appresero che egli assediava le fortezze, con gemiti e lacrime, insieme a tutto il popolo, supplicarono il Signore d'inviare un angelo buono per la salvezza d'Israele.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Poi il Maccabeo stesso per primo prese le armi ed esortò gli altri ad affrontare il pericolo insieme a lui per soccorrere i loro fratelli. Si mossero tutti insieme con coraggio.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Mentre erano ancora presso Gerusalemme, apparve alla loro testa un cavaliere vestito di bianco, che agitava armi d'oro.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Allora tutti insieme benedissero il misericordioso Dio e si rinvigorirono nell'animo, pronti ad assalire non solo gli uomini, ma anche le fiere selvagge e mura di ferro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Avanzarono in ordine di battaglia con quell'alleato venuto dal cielo, grazie al Signore che aveva avuto di essi misericordia.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Quindi, gettatisi sui nemici come leoni, abbatterono undicimila fanti e milleseicento cavalieri, costringendo tutti gli altri alla fuga.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 La maggior parte di questi si mise in salvo, ma ferita e disarmata, e Lisia stesso si salvò fuggendo vergognosamente.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Questi però, che non era privo d'intelligenza, riflettendo tra sé sulla disfatta che gli era capitata, comprese che gli Ebrei erano invincibili perché il potente Dio combatteva per essi.
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 Perciò inviò loro ambasciatori e li persuase a venire ad un accordo su quanto era giusto. A questo scopo egli avrebbe persuaso anche il re, costringendolo a farsi loro amico.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Il Maccabeo acconsentì a tutte le cose che Lisia gli aveva proposto, preoccupato solo della comune utilità. Perciò quanto il Maccabeo richiese per iscritto a Lisia riguardo ai Giudei, il re lo concesse.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 La lettera scritta da Lisia ai Giudei era concepita in questo modo: "Lisia al popolo dei Giudei: salute!
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Giovanni e Assalonne, da voi inviati, mi consegnarono il documento sottotrascritto, pregandomi di ratificare quanto era in esso contenuto.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Io, dunque, ho esposto al re quanto bisognava riferirgli e quanto era accettabile egli l'ha concesso.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Se perciò voi manterrete un favorevole atteggiamento verso il governo, io mi sforzerò di farmi promotore dei vostri vantaggi anche per il resto.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 Quanto a queste cose e ad altre in particolare, ho dato ordine ai vostri e ai miei inviati di discuterne con voi.

22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La lettera del re era così concepita: "Il re Antioco al fratello Lisia: salute!
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Passato nostro padre tra gli dèi, noi che vogliamo che i cittadini del regno attendano senza timore alla cura dei propri affari,
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 abbiamo sentito che i Giudei non vogliono adottare i costumi greci, come voleva nostro padre, ma piuttosto, preferendo il loro modo di vivere, chiedono che siano loro lasciate le proprie leggi.
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 Volendo perciò che anche questo popolo viva senza timore, decidiamo che sia loro restituito il tempio e che possano vivere secondo le consuetudini dei loro antenati.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Farai bene, dunque, ad inviare alcuni presso di essi e a dar loro la destra, affinché, conoscendo la nostra scelta, stiano di buon animo e attendano con piacere alla ripresa dei loro affari".
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 La lettera indirizzata dal re al popolo era questa: "Il re Antioco al consiglio dei Giudei e agli altri Giudei: salute!
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Se state bene, è come noi vogliamo. Anche noi stiamo bene.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Menelao ci ha spiegato che voi volete far ritorno alle vostre occupazioni.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 di Xàntico si metteranno in viaggio, sarà data la destra con l'assicurazione
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 che i Giudei potranno far uso delle loro sostanze e delle loro leggi, come era anche prima, e nessuno di essi sarà molestato in nessuna maniera per gli errori commessi per ignoranza.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Ho inviato anche Menelao per tranquillizzarvi.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 State bene! L'anno 148, il 15 di Xàntico".
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Anche i Romani inviarono agli stessi una lettera così concepita: "Quinto Mennio e Tito Manlio, legati romani, al popolo dei Giudei: salute!
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Riguardo alle cose che Lisia, parente del re, vi ha concesso, anche noi siamo d'accordo.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Per le cose, invece, che egli ha giudicato di dover sottoporre al re, voi, dopo averle esaminate, mandateci subito qualcuno affinché provvediamo come meglio conviene per voi. Noi infatti proseguiamo per Antiochia.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Per la qual cosa affrettatevi a mandarci qualcuno affinché anche noi possiamo conoscere di quale opinione siete.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 State bene! L'anno 148, il 15 di Xàntico".
