1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Lysias, le tuteur et parent du roi qui gouvernait le royaume, fut très contrarié de ce qui venait de se passer. Très peu de temps après
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 il rassembla environ 80 000 hommes et toute la cavalerie; il se mit en marche contre les Juifs avec l’idée de faire de leur ville une résidence de Grecs,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 de tirer de l’argent du Temple comme des sanctuaires des païens, et de mettre en vente chaque année la charge de grand prêtre.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 Il se laissait aveugler par la foule de ses fantassins, par ses milliers de cavaliers et ses 80 éléphants, et il oubliait complètement la force de Dieu.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Il entra donc en Judée et s’approcha de Beth-Sour, une forteresse distante de Jérusalem d’environ 30 kilomètres; il en fit le siège.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Quand Maccabée et ses hommes apprirent que Lysias venait assiéger les forteresses, ils supplièrent le Seigneur avec des cris et des larmes; avec toute la foule, ils priaient le Seigneur d’envoyer son bon ange pour sauver Israël.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Maccabée, le premier, reprit les armes, encourageant les autres à se lancer avec lui au-devant du danger pour secourir leurs frères. Et tous ensemble, courageusement, ils se mirent en route.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Comme ils étaient encore près de Jérusalem, un cavalier habillé de blanc, portant une armure d’or, apparut marchant à leur tête.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Tous ensemble ils bénirent le Dieu plein de miséricorde; déjà ils se sentaient pleins de courage, prêts à affronter non seulement des hommes mais les bêtes les plus féroces, et même à renverser des remparts de fer.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Ils s’avancèrent donc en ordre de bataille avec cet allié venu du ciel: le Seigneur avait eu pitié d’eux et venait à leur secours.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Ils se lancèrent comme des lions sur les ennemis et ils en tuèrent 11 000, plus 1 600 cavaliers, obligeant tous les autres à prendre la fuite.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 Presque tous s’enfuyaient blessés et sans armes, et Lysias lui-même ne sauva sa vie que grâce à une fuite honteuse.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Mais Lysias était intelligent, il réfléchit sur la défaite qu’il venait de subir. Il comprit que les Hébreux étaient invincibles parce que le Dieu fort combattait avec eux.
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 C’est pourquoi il leur envoya quelqu’un pour les amener à faire la paix sur des bases justes et il ajouta qu’il saurait persuader le roi et l’obliger à devenir leur ami.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Maccabée accepta tout ce que proposait Lysias, car il n’avait pas d’autre souci que le bien du peuple, et de fait, le roi accorda aux Juifs tout ce que Maccabée avait demandé par écrit à Lysias.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 Voici ce que disaient les lettres envoyées aux Juifs par Lysias: “Lysias salue la communauté des Juifs.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Vos envoyés Jean et Absalom m’ont remis vos propositions et ils attendaient une réponse aux problèmes qui ont été soulevés.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 J’ai exposé au roi tout ce qui devait lui être soumis, et j’ai accordé ce que je pouvais accorder.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Si donc vous conservez vos bons sentiments à l’égard de l’État, de mon côté j’essaierai à l’avenir de faire tout ce que je peux pour votre bien.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 Pour les questions de détails, j’ai ordonné à vos envoyés et aux miens d’en discuter avec vous.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 Portez-vous bien. L’an 148, le 24 de Zeus Corinthien.”
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 Voici comment était tournée la lettre du roi: “Le roi Antiocus salue son frère Lysias.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Notre père étant allé rejoindre les dieux, nous voulons maintenant que les sujets de notre royaume puissent s’occuper de leurs affaires sans inquiétude.
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 Nous avons appris que les Juifs n’acceptent pas de suivre, comme le voulait notre père, les coutumes des Grecs, mais qu’ils préfèrent vivre à leur manière et demandent que leurs coutumes soient respectées.
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 Comme nous voulons que cette nation sorte de ses troubles, nous décidons que le Temple leur sera rendu et qu’ils pourront vivre selon les coutumes de leurs ancêtres.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Tu feras donc bien d’envoyer auprès d’eux quelqu’un pour leur tendre la main, pour qu’ils connaissent nos bonnes intentions, qu’ils soient rassurés et puissent s’occuper tranquillement de leurs propres affaires.”
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 Voici maintenant le texte de la lettre du roi adressée à la nation: “Le roi Antiocus salue le conseil des anciens des Juifs et tous les autres Juifs!
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Nous souhaitons que vous soyez en bonne santé, nous sommes nous-mêmes en bonne santé.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Ménélas nous a appris votre désir de rentrer dans vos foyers et de vous occuper de vos affaires.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 Aussi tendons-nous la main à tous ceux qui retourneront chez eux avant le 30 du mois de Xanthique: nous ne leur imposerons rien.
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 Les Juifs pourront manger leurs aliments et suivre leurs lois comme autrefois. Personne parmi eux ne sera inquiété de quelque manière que ce soit pour les fautes qu’il a pu commettre par ignorance.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 J’envoie d’ailleurs Ménélas pour vous rassurer.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 Portez-vous bien. L’an 148, le 15 du mois de Xanthique.”
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Les Romains aussi envoyèrent la lettre suivante: “Quintus Memmius, Titus Manilius, Manius Sergius, ambassadeurs de Rome, saluent le peuple juif.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Nous sommes pleinement d’accord avec ce que Lysias, parent du roi, vous a accordé.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Quant aux difficultés que Lysias a décidé de soumettre au roi, envoyez-nous rapidement quelqu’un pour que nous puissions les examiner et les présenter au roi comme vous le désirez. Car nous nous rendons à Antioche.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Ne tardez donc pas à nous envoyer quelqu’un pour que nous sachions nous aussi ce que vous pensez.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 Soyez en bonne santé. L’an 148, le 15 du mois de Xanthique.”
