1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Poco tempo dopo, Lisia, tutore e parente del re e incaricato degli affari di stato, mal sopportando l’accaduto,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 raccolti circa ottantamila uomini e tutta la cavalleria, mosse contro i Giudei, contando di ridurre la città a residenza dei Greci,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 di imporre tasse al tempio come agli altri edifici di culto delle nazioni e di mettere in vendita ogni anno il sommo sacerdozio.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 Egli non teneva in nessun conto la potenza di Dio, ma confidava soltanto nelle sue miriadi di fanti, nelle migliaia di cavalieri e negli ottanta elefanti.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Entrato nella Giudea e avvicinatosi a Bet-Sur, che era una posizione fortificata distante da Gerusalemme circa venti miglia, la cinse d’assedio.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Quando gli uomini del Maccabeo vennero a sapere che quello assediava le fortezze, tra gemiti e lacrime supplicarono con tutto il popolo il Signore che inviasse l’angelo buono a salvare Israele.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Lo stesso Maccabeo, cingendo per primo le armi, esortò gli altri a esporsi con lui al pericolo per andare in aiuto dei loro fratelli: tutti insieme partirono con coraggio.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Mentre si trovavano ancora vicino a Gerusalemme, apparve come condottiero davanti a loro un cavaliere in sella, vestito di bianco, che brandiva armi d’oro.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Tutti insieme benedissero Dio misericordioso e si sentirono rincuorati, pronti ad assalire non solo gli uomini ma anche le bestie più feroci e mura di ferro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Procedevano in ordine, con un alleato venuto dal cielo, per la misericordia che il Signore aveva avuto di loro.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Gettatisi come leoni sui nemici, stesero al suolo undicimila fanti e milleseicento cavalieri e costrinsero tutti a fuggire.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 Costoro in gran parte riuscirono a salvarsi feriti e spogliati. E lo stesso Lisia si salvò fuggendo vergognosamente.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Ma, non privo di intelligenza, pensando alla sconfitta subita e constatando che gli Ebrei erano invincibili, perché il Dio potente combatteva al loro fianco,
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 mandò a proporre un accordo su tutto ciò che fosse giusto, assicurando che a questo scopo avrebbe persuaso il re, facendo pressione su di lui perché diventasse loro amico.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Il Maccabeo, badando a ciò che più conveniva, acconsentì a tutto quanto Lisia chiedeva. Infatti, quanto il Maccabeo aveva presentato a Lisia per iscritto riguardo ai Giudei, il re lo accordò.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 Il contenuto della lettera scritta da Lisia ai Giudei era del seguente tenore:
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 «Lisia al popolo dei Giudei, salute! Giovanni e Assalonne, inviati da voi, ci hanno consegnato il documento sotto riportato e hanno chiesto la ratifica dei punti in esso contenuti.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Quanto era necessario riferire anche al re, gliel’ho esposto ed egli ha accordato quanto era accettabile.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Se dunque continuerete a essere favorevoli agli interessi del regno, cercherò anche in avvenire di procurarvi dei favori.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 Su questi punti e sui particolari ho dato ordine ai vostri e ai miei incaricati di trattare con voi.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 State bene. L’anno centoquarantotto, il ventiquattro del mese di Dioscorinzio».
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La lettera del re si esprimeva così: «Il re Antioco al fratello Lisia, salute!
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Dopo che nostro padre è passato tra gli dèi, vogliamo che i cittadini del regno possano tranquillamente attendere ai loro interessi.
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 Avendo sentito che i Giudei non intendono accettare l’ellenizzazione voluta da nostro padre, ma, attaccati al loro sistema di vita, chiedono di attenersi alle proprie leggi,
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 volendo perciò che anche questa nazione sia libera da turbamenti, decretiamo che il tempio sia loro restituito e si governino secondo le tradizioni dei loro antenati.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Farai bene, dunque, a inviare loro messaggeri e a dare loro la destra, perché, conosciuta la nostra decisione, si sentano rincuorati e riprendano a loro agio la cura delle proprie cose».
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 La lettera del re indirizzata alla nazione era così concepita: «Il re Antioco al consiglio degli anziani dei Giudei e agli altri Giudei, salute!
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Se state bene, è appunto come noi vogliamo; anche noi godiamo ottima salute.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Menelao ci ha rivelato che voi volete tornare a vivere nelle vostre sedi.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 A quelli che si metteranno in viaggio entro i trenta giorni del mese di Xàntico sarà garantita sicurezza e facoltà
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 di usare, come Giudei, delle loro regole alimentari e delle loro leggi, come prima, e nessuno di loro potrà essere molestato da alcuno per le mancanze commesse per ignoranza.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Ho anche mandato Menelao per rassicurarvi.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 State bene. L’anno centoquarantotto, il quindici del mese di Xàntico».
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Anche i Romani inviarono loro questa lettera: «Quinto Memmio e Tito Manio, legati dei Romani, al popolo dei Giudei, salute!
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Riguardo a ciò che Lisia, parente del re, vi ha concesso, anche noi siamo d’accordo.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Riguardo invece a quei punti che egli ha giudicato dover riferire al re, mandate subito qualcuno, dopo averli esaminati, perché possiamo riferire le cose in modo conveniente per voi. Noi siamo in viaggio per Antiòchia.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Mandate dunque in fretta dei messaggeri per farci conoscere di quale parere siete.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 State bene. L’anno centoquarantotto, il quindici del mese di Xàntico».
