1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Muy poco tiempo después, Lisias, tutor y pariente del rey, que estaba al frente de los negocios, muy contrariado por lo sucedido,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 reunió unos 80.000 hombres con toda la caballería, y se puso en marcha contra los judíos, con la intención de hacer de la ciudad una población de griegos,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 convertir el Templo en fuente de recursos, como los demás recintos sagrados de los gentiles, y poner cada año en venta la dignidad del sumo sacerdocio.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 No tenía en cuenta en absoluto el poder de Dios, engreído como estaba con sus miríadas de infantes, sus millares de jinetes y sus ochenta elefantes.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Entró en Judea, se acercó a Bet Sur, plaza fuerte que dista de Jerusalén unas cinco esjenas, y la cercó estrechamente.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 En cuanto los hombres de Macabeo supieron que Lisias estaba sitiando las fortalezas, comenzaron a implorar al Señor con gemidos y lágrimas, junto con la multitud, que enviase un ángel bueno para salvar a Israel.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Macabeo en persona tomó el primero las armas y exhortó a los demás a que juntamente con él afrontaran el peligro y auxiliaran a sus hermanos. Ellos se lanzaron juntos con entusiasmo.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Cuando estaban cerca de Jerusalén, apareció poniéndose al frente de ellos, un jinete vestido de blanco, blandiendo armas de oro.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Todos a una bendijeron entonces a Dios misericordioso y y sintieron enardecerse sus ánimos, dispuestos a atravesar no sólo a hombres, sino aun a las fieras más salvajes murallas de hierro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Avanzaban equipados, con el aliado enviado del Cielo, porque el Señor se había compadecido de ellos.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Se lanzaron como leones sobre los enemigos, abatieron 11.000 infantes y 1.600 jinetes, y obligaron a huir a todos los demás.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 La mayoría de éstos escaparon heridos y desarmados; el mismo Lisias se salvó huyendo vergonzosamente.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Pero Lisias no era hombre sin juicio. Reflexionando sobre la derrota que acababa de sufrir, y comprendiendo que los hebreos eran invencibles porque el Dios poderoso luchaba con ellos,
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 les propuso por una embajada la reconciliación bajo toda clase de condiciones justas; y que además obligaría al rey a hacerse amigo de ellos.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Macabeo asintió a todo lo que Lisias proponía, preocupado por el interés público; pues el rey concedió cuanto Macabeo había pedido por escrito a Lisias acerca de los judíos.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 La carta escrita por Lisias a los judíos decía lo siguiente: «Lisias saluda a la población de los judíos.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Juan y Absalón, vuestros enviados, al entregarme el documento copiado a continuación, me han rogado una respuesta sobre lo que en el mismo se significaba.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 He dado cuenta al rey de todo lo que debía exponérsele; lo que era de mi competencia lo he concedido.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Por consiguiente, si mantenéis vuestra buena disposición hacia el Estado, también yo procuraré en adelante colaborar en vuestro favor.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 En cuanto a los detalles, tengo dada orden a vuestros enviados y a los míos de que los discutan con vosotros.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 Seguid bien. Año 148, el veinticuatro de Dióscoro».
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La carta del rey decía lo siguiente: «El rey Antíoco saluda a su hermano Lisias.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Habiendo pasado nuestro padre donde los dioses, deseamos que los súbditos del reino vivan sin inquietudes para entregarse a sus propias ocupaciones.
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 Teniendo oído que los judíos no están de acuerdo en adoptar las costumbres griegas, como era voluntad de mi padre, sino que prefieren seguir sus propias costumbres, y ruegan que se les permita acomodarse a sus leyes,
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 deseosos, por tanto, de que esta nación esté tranquila, decidimios que se les restituya el Templo y que puedan vivir según las costumbres de sus antepasados.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Bien harás, por tanto, en enviarles emisarios que les den la mano, para que al saber nuestra determinación, se sientan confiados y se dediquen con agrado a sus propias ocupaciones».
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 La carta del rey a la nación era como sigue: «El rey Antíoco saluda al Senado de los judíos y a los demás judíos.
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Sería nuestro deseo que os encontrarais bien; también nosotros gozamos de salud.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Menelao nos ha manifestado vuestro deseo de volver a vuestros hogares.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 A los que vuelvan antes del treinta del mes de Xántico se les ofrece la mano y libertad
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 para que los judíos se sirvan de sus propios alimentos y leyes como antes, y ninguno de ellos sea molestado en modo alguno a causa de faltas cometidas por ignorancia.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 He enviado a Menelao para que os anime.

34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 También los romanos les enviaron una carta con el siguiente contenido: «Quinto Memmio, Tito Manilio, Manio Sergio, legados de los romanos, saludan al pueblo de los judíos.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Nosotros damos nuestro consentimiento a lo que Lisias, pariente del rey, os ha concedido.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Pero en relación con lo que él decidió presentar al rey, mandadnos algún emisario en cuanto lo hayáis examinado, para que lo expongamos en la forma que os conviene, ya que nos dirigimos a Antioquía,
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Daos prisa, por tanto; enviadnos a algunos, para que también nosotros conozcamos cuál es vuestra opinión.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 Seguid en buena salud. Año 148, día quince de Dióscoro».
