1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 Muy poco tiempo después, Lisias, tutor y familiar del rey, que estaba al frente de los asuntos de Estado,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 reunió unos ochenta mil hombres y toda la caballería, y marchó contra los judíos. Tenía la intención de convertir la ciudad en un lugar de residencia para los griegos,
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 de hacer del Santuario una fuente de recursos, como los otros santuarios de los paganos, y de poner en venta cada año el cargo de Sumo Sacerdote.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 El no tenía en cuenta para nada el poder de Dios, porque estaba engreído con sus regimientos de infantería, sus millares de jinetes y sus ochenta elefantes.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Una vez que penetró en Judea, se acercó a Betsur, una plaza fuerte que distaba unos veintiocho kilómetros de Jerusalén, y la sitió.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Cuando los partidarios del Macabeo supieron que Lisias había sitiado la fortaleza, comenzaron a suplicar al Señor con gemidos y lágrimas, unidos a la multitud, pidiéndole que enviara un ángel protector para salvar a Israel.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 El propio Macabeo, que fue el primero en empuñar las armas, exhortó a los demás a afrontar el peligro junto a él, a fin de salvar a sus hermanos. Todos se lanzaron al combate con gran entusiasmo
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 y, cuando todavía estaban cerca de Jerusalén, apareció al frente de ellos un jinete con vestiduras blancas y esgrimiendo armas de oro.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Todos bendijeron unánimemente al Dios misericordioso, y se enardecieron de tal manera, que estaban dispuestos a acometer, no sólo contra los hombres, sino también contra las bestias más feroces y aun contra murallas de hierro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Así avanzaron en orden de batalla, protegidos por su aliado celestial, porque el Señor se había compadecido de ellos.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Y lanzándose como leones contra los enemigos, derribaron a once mil soldados y a mil seiscientos jinetes, y a todos los demás los obligaron a huir.
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 La mayoría de estos escaparon heridos y sin armas, y el mismo Lisias se salvó huyendo vergonzosamente.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Como Lisias no era ningún insensato, reflexionó sobre la derrota que acababa de sufrir, y reconoció que los hebreos eran invencibles porque el Dios poderoso combatía con ellos.
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 Entonces les envió una embajada para proponerles una reconciliación en condiciones razonables, prometiéndoles que induciría al rey a hacerse amigo de ellos.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 El Macabeo, no teniendo otra preocupación que el bien público, accedió a todas las propuestas de Lisias; y el rey concedió todo lo que el Macabeo había pedido por escrito a Lisias en favor de los judíos.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 La carta escrita por Lisias a los judíos decía lo siguiente: «Lisias saluda a la comunidad de los judíos.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Juan y Absalón, los legados de ustedes, al entregarme por escrito sus peticiones, me han pedido una respuesta favorable respecto de lo allí consignado.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Ya he comunicado al rey todo lo que era necesario notificarle, y él ha otorgado todo lo que le pareció admisible.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Por lo tanto, si mantienen su buena disposición respecto del Estado, yo procuraré favorecerlos en adelante.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 En cuanto a las cuestiones de detalle, he dado instrucciones a sus enviados y a los míos, para que las discutan con ustedes.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 ¡Qué les vaya bien! Año ciento cuarenta y ocho, el veinticuatro del mes de Dióscoro».
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La carta del rey estaba concebida en estos términos: «El rey Antíoco saluda a su hermano Lisias.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Habiendo pasado nuestro padre a la compañía de los dioses, deseamos que los súbditos de nuestro reino puedan dedicarse sin temor al cuidado de sus propios intereses.
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 Y como hemos sabido que los judíos no quieren adoptar las costumbres helénicas prometidas por nuestro padre, sino que prefieren seguir sus propias costumbres y piden que se les permita vivir conforme a sus leyes,
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 deseosos de que también esta nación esté tranquila, decretamos que su Santuario sea restituido a su primitivo estado y que ellos se gobiernen de acuerdo con las costumbres de sus antepasados.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Por lo tanto, harás un buen servicio enviándoles una embajada de paz, a fin de que, conociendo nuestra decisión, puedan vivir confiados y se dediquen de buen ánimo a sus propias ocupaciones».
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 Esta es la carta del rey al pueblo: «El rey Antíoco saluda al Consejo de los ancianos y a todos los judíos.
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Es nuestro deseo que se encuentren bien. También nosotros gozamos de perfecta salud.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 Menelao nos ha hecho saber el deseo que ustedes tienen de volver a sus propios hogares.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 A todos los que se pongan en camino antes del treinta del mes de Xántico, se les asegura la impunidad.
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 Los judíos podrán gobernarse según sus leyes, como lo hacían antes, especialmente en lo que se refiere a los alimentos, y ninguno de ellos será molestado para nada a causa de las faltas cometidas por ignorancia.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Les envió además a Menelao para que les infunda confianza.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 ¡Qué les vaya bien! Año ciento cuarenta y ocho, el quince del mes de Xántico.
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 También los romanos enviaron a los judíos la siguiente carta: «Quinto Memio y Tito Manio, legados de los romanos, saludan al pueblo de los judíos.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Damos nuestro consentimiento a todo lo que les ha concedido Lisias, familiar del rey.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Pero en lo que respecta a lo que él consideró que debía someter al juicio del rey, envíennos urgentemente a alguien con instrucciones detalladas sobre el particular, para que las expongamos como les conviene a ustedes, ya que vamos a ir a Antioquía.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Mándennos a algunos lo antes posible, a fin de que también nosotros conozcamos el punto de vista de ustedes.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 ¡Salud! Año ciento cuarenta y ocho, el quince del mes de Xántico.
