1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.	1 - Ma poco tempo dopo, Lisia, tutore del re, suo parente, e preposto a' suoi negozi, furibondo per quel che era accaduto,
2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,	2 radunati ottomila uomini e tutta la cavalleria, veniva contro a' Giudei, pensandosi di prender la città e farne l’abitazione dei Gentili ;
3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:	3 di servirsi del tempio come fonte di guadagno al pari degli altri templi pagani, e di metter a prezzo ogni anno il sommo sacerdozio.
4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.	4 E niente pensando alla potenza di Dio, trasportato dall’orgoglio, fidava nella moltitudine de' suoi fanti, nelle migliaia di cavalieri, e negli ottanta elefanti.
5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.	5 Entrato dunque in Giudea, e giunto davanti a Betsura, posta in angusto luogo a cinque stadil di distanza da Gerusalemme, espugnò quella fortezza.
6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.	6 Quando il Maccabeo ed i suoi seppero che venivano espugnate fortezze, còn gemiti e lacrime pregavano lì Signore, essi e tutto il popolo, che mandasse un buon angelo a salvare Israele.
7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.	7 Ed egli stesso, il Maccabeo, per primo, prese le armi, esortava gli altri ad esporsi con lui al cimento, e portar aiuto ai loro fratelli.
8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.	8 Or mentre con animo risoluto avanzavano da Gerusalemme, apparve loro un cavaliere che li precedeva, in candida sopravveste, con armi d’oro, brandendo la lancia.
9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.	9 Allora, tutti ad una voce benedissero il misericordioso Signore, e s’inanimirono, pronti a superare non solo gli uomini ma anche le bestie più feroci, e delle mura di ferro.
10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them	10 Andavano dunque con slancio, avendo dal cielo un aiuto, per la misericordia di Dio verso di loro.
11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.	11 Con impeto da leoni irrompendo contro i nemici, ne abbatterono undicimila fanti e milleseicento cavalieri;
12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.	12 tutti gli altri, poi, li misero in fuga; molti di loro feriti, gettate le armi, fuggirono; ed anche lo stesso Lisia non scampò che con un’ignobile fuga.
13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,	13 Allora, siccome egli non era uno stolto, ripensando fra sè all’umiliazione subita, e comprendendo che gli Ebrei erano invincibili perchè sorretti dall’aiuto dell’onnipotente Dio, mandò a loro,
14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.	14 promettendo che accorderebbe loro tutto quello che è giusto, e sospingerebbe il re ad esser loro amico.
15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.	15 Acconsentì il Maccabeo alla preghiera di Lisia, provvedendo a comune vantaggio; e tutto quello che egli chiese pel Giudei scrivendo a Lisia, il re lo concesse.
16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	16 La lettera scritta a' Giudei da Lisia diceva così: « Lisia, al popolo de' Giudei, salute.
17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.	17 Giovanni ed Abesalom, mandati da voi a portarmi le vostre lettere, chiedevano,che lo facessi ciò che per loro mezzo mi fu esposto.
18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.	18 Pertanto, tutto quello che al re si poteva riferire, l'esposi; ed egli ha conceduto quello che le circostanze consentivano.
19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.	19 Se dunque negli affari vi manterrete fedeli, io cercherò di esservi favorevole anche per l’avvenire.
20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.	20 Dell’altre cose poi, ho dato commissione a loro ed a’ legati miei, di parlarne una per una a voce con voi.
21 Fare ye well. The hundred and eight and fortieth year, the four and twentieth day of the month Dioscorinthius.	21 Statevi bene. L’anno centoquarantotto, a dì ventiquattro del mese di Dloscoro ».
22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:	22 La lettera vpoi del re diceva così: «Il re Antioco, a Lisia fratello, salute.
23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.	23 Trasferito fra gli dèi il padre nostro, volendo noi che i nostri sudditi stiano tranquilli, cd attendano con cura alle loro faccende,
24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.	24 abbiamo saputo che i Giudei non si son piegati alla volontà del padre mio che passassero ai riti dei Greci, ma vogliono conservare le proprie istituzioni, e perciò domandano che concediamo loro di vivere secondo le loro leggi.
25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.	25 Volendo pertanto che anche questa nazione stia in pace, abbiamo giudicato e stabilito che sia loro restituito il tempio, acciò si governino secondo le consuetudini degli avi loro.
26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.	26 Farai dunque bene mandando legati a portar loro la pace, affinchè, conosciuto il nostro volere, siano contenti, e s’applichino al proprio bene ».
27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:	27 Ai Giudei poi il re scrisse così: « Il re Antioco, al senato dei Giudei, ed agli altri Giudei, salute.
28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.	28 Se state bene, è quel che vogliamo, ed anche noi stiamo bene.
29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:	29 È venuto a noi Menelao, a dirci che vorreste venire a visitare i vostri connazionali che sono con noi.
30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.	30 A quelli dunque che saranno in viaggio, sino ai trenta del mese di Xantico, diamo libertà di sicurezza.
31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.	31 Che i Giudei usino del cibi e delle leggi loro come per l'innanzi, e che nessuno di loro in verun modo riceva molestie per ciò che inavvertitamente avessero fatto.
32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.	32 Abbiamo mandato anche Menelao, a parlarvi.
33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	33 Statevi bene. L'anno centoquarantotto, ai quindici del mese di Xantico ».
34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.	34 Anche i Romani mandarono una lettera del seguente tenore: « Quinto Memmio e Tito Manilio, legati de' Romani, al popolo del Giudei, salute.
35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.	35 Di ciò che Lisia parente del re v’ ha conceduto, conveniamo anche noi.
36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.	36 Di quelle cose poi delle quali giudicò dover riferire al re, conferitene fra voi maturamente, e mandateci subito qualcuno, acciò risolviamo quel che a voi conviene; perchè noi stiamo per andar in Antiochia.
37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.	37 Affrettatevi dunque a riscriverci affinchè sappiamo anche noi quali sono i vostri desiderii.
38 Farewell. This hundred and eight and fortieth year, the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.	38 Statevi bene. L'anno centoquarantotto, ai quindici del mese di Xantico ».
