DOUAI-RHEIMSRevised Standard Version Catholic Edition
For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins:1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because he himself also is compassed with infirmity.2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.3 Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people.
Neither doth any man take the honour to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was.4 And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was.
So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee";
As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech.6 as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."
Who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence.7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard for his godly fear.
And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered:8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered;
And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation.9 and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
Called by God a high priest according to the order of Melchisedech.10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Of whom we have much to say, and hard to be intelligibly uttered: because you are become weak to hear.11 About this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
For whereas for the time you ought to be masters, you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God: and you are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God's word. You need milk, not solid food;
For every one that is a partaker of milk, is unskillful in the word of justice: for he is a little child.13 for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child.
But strong meat is for the perfect; for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil.14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
