But speak thou the things that become sound doctrine: | 1 As for yourself, you must say what is consistent with sound doctrine, namely, |
That the aged men be sober, chaste, prudent, sound in faith, in love, in patience. | 2 that older men should be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and endurance. |
The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well: | 3 Similarly, older women should be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to drink, teaching what is good, |
That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4 so that they may train younger women to love their husbands and children, |
To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5 to be self-controlled, chaste, good homemakers, under the control of their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited. |
Young men, in like manner, exhort that they be sober. | 6 Urge the younger men, similarly, to control themselves, |
In all things shew thyself an example of good works, in doctrine, in integrity, in gravity, | 7 showing yourself as a model of good deeds in every respect, with integrity in your teaching, dignity, |
The sound word that can not be blamed: that he, who is on the contrary part, may be afraid, having no evil to say of us. | 8 and sound speech that cannot be criticized, so that the opponent will be put to shame without anything bad to say about us. |
Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters, in all things pleasing, not gainsaying: | 9 Slaves are to be under the control of their masters in all respects, giving them satisfaction, not talking back to them |
Not defrauding, but in all things shewing good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things: | 10 or stealing from them, but exhibiting complete good faith, so as to adorn the doctrine of God our savior in every way. |
For the grace of God our Savior hath appeared to all men; | 11 For the grace of God has appeared, saving all |
Instructing us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly, and justly, and godly in this world, | 12 and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, |
Looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ, | 13 as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of the great God and of our savior Jesus Christ, |
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and might cleanse to himself a people acceptable, a pursuer of good works. | 14 who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. |
These things speak, and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15 Say these things. Exhort and correct with all authority. Let no one look down on you. |
